Imam Al Ghazali one of the greatast of all time really . love him

Understanding Islam truly is the only way to spiritual happiness. As a revert brother who studies Islam one thing I have learned the most is there is no freedom without discipline of the self. People who are green to knowledge and wisdom feel freedom is allowing carnal desire to roam freely. This is a trap because Carnal desires don't come with wisdom and understanding. They come only with an appetite to feed and get their fill and are unaware of pitfalls, they only want their fill regardless of dangers. However, when desires, ego (Nafs) are controlled by the self then true self freedom (liberation) can make its way into your life and to think there are millions of people on earth who will never get to feel what this feels like. Truly sad.

As a Christian, I found it a privilege to read Al-Ghazali's work. I compare him with Aquinas and Augustine.

I like how the human is explained here. :) But in my case it's completely the opposite of what is said here at the beginning - the process of knowing yourself first to know God. The more I get to know God, the closer I am with Him who made me, the more He reveals about me and how I as a human being (His creation) work... :)

I am a secular humanist and appreciate al Ghazali's thought. But I appreciated Avicenna and Averroes more (his more enlightened intellectual adversaries.) This presentation is like a beautiful abstract painting - a series of nicely constructed assertions about human nature and the divine, and possibly a framework for discussion, but without any specific foundation in reality. It does encourage us to think beyond our daily existence. I keep thinking about the argument he had in his 'Incoherence of the Philosophers' - that cotton burned not because of a chemical reaction but because Allah willed it. Its not an attitude to encourage scientific research and innovation. Otherwise he did support such things as death for apostasy and military jihad - but of course they were in the middle of wars against the crusaders.

The Upaniṣhads say there is a chariot, which has five horses pulling it; the horses have reins in their mouths, which are in the hands of a charioteer; a passenger is sitting at the back of the chariot. Ideally, the passenger should instruct the charioteer, who should then control the reins and guide the horses in the proper direction. However, in this case, the passenger has gone to sleep, and so the horses are holding sway. In this analogy, the chariot is the body, the horses are the five senses, the reins in the mouth of the horses is the mind, the charioteer is the intellect (the head of the heart) and the passenger seated behind is the soul residing in the body. The senses (horses) desire pleasurable things. The mind (reins) is not exercising restraint on the senses (horses). The intellect (charioteer) submits to the pull of the reins (mind). So in the materially bound state, the bewildered soul does not direct the intellect in the proper direction. Thus, the senses decide the direction where the chariot will go. The soul experiences the pleasures of the senses vicariously, but these do not satisfy it. Seated on this chariot, the soul (passenger) is moving around in this material world, lost and without true happiness. However, if the heart of a person wakes up to its higher nature, which is the soul, through spiritual knowledge and discipline and decides to take a proactive role, it can exercise the intellect in the proper direction. The intellect will then govern the lower self-the mind and the senses-and the chariot will move in the direction of eternal welfare. In this way, the higher self (soul, heart; intellect) must be used to control the lower self (mind, senses, body).
