Alī bin Abī Thalib was the fourth ruling caliph and the first Shia Imam. He was one of the first converts to Islam and one of the Prophet's main companions. Genealogically, Ali is the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. Ali's marriage to Fatimah az-Zahra also made him the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad.
