--------
In this clip, Iman Shumpert discussed some of the methods and habits he’s formed (or not) around spending money. He said he never had an issue with spending and managed to save a lot of money over the course of his playing career as a result. At one point, Iman said he couldn’t fathom how athletes could go broke with all the financial incentives they’re contractually afforded.

@@AccentBwoy It's the concept of maximizing your wealth, by figuring what percentage of your income, goes to expenses. Regardless of how much you make, keeping your total expenses 50% or less of your income gives you financial room to save and invest in whatever it is needed to continue or build true wealth. Growing up, all I was told was, "Make sure your bills are paid, and save what you can." That's not a great formula.

@fredtolliver4798
@fredtolliver4798 Год назад
It's pretty simple math how some go broke in professional sports....excessive spending, bad investments, and then a possible short tenure in the league.....the NBA tenure is an average of 5 years.....let me say that again.....5 years....so if one joins the league at 22 or 25, they're 27 or 30 when they're done.....soooooooo, they still have to make a living, so if that money is gone, that's a wrap.....now for the extreme cases when one's tenure is considerably longer, and they've blown through $100M or more, then that's another story, but I'm not here to judge....all the non rich people like to play financial quarterback on the net, but probably wouldn't do much better if they suddenly became wealthy in their early 20s.....

The thing about any athlete regardless of the sport going broke is lack of financial literacy. It begins at home if you weren't taught about it young then you'll probably have terrible spending habits as an adult. Also when you have multiple family members just expecting you to take care of them presents another problem. And on top of all that there's potentially dealing with unscrupulous agents and accountants who will steal your money.

He's right. You do need a BIG upstart to live off of the coupon payments that come from long term bonds though but well worth it because because when the bond yields to maturity, you get back the par of the bond plus the coupon payments you were receiving during the duration of said bond. So he's going to get a big chunk of change when all his bonds mature and on top of that, the appreciation of his other assets/other securities will just be icing on the cake! Great advice from him.

Having great parents and paying attention does wonders. Sadly, I did have the right parents but not the options to make it big since my parents were raised poorly by their parents so I kinda took it along the way. To be quiet honest, I am basically broke and living on borrowed time. Poor and hungry are like the two elements that were kinda always there, but I am in the process of making a change. Enlisting to the army, actually PAYING attention to what I really need and not what I want while working from 9 to 5 as a security dude and learning for my military tests at the same time while being on work. It's a hard journey, not gonna lie. I always feel like givin up 'n ish but I cannot since I have made some major personal moves in the past months. The only downside is that I kinda have the feeling that I'm doing as much as everybody else but not getting the same amount back as those said people. Basically doing double the work only to achieve the same reward. I am literally sleepin on a couch, I can barely pay all my bills and I still have to flip every coin that I have. Literally between rock and a hard place. I only have a couch, a washing machine, a blanket, a pillow and my almost fully broken laptop to manage this while having an outdated phone on the side. Then again, I am on the way to become better. A better and improved version of myself. Some might say it's taking forever but better late than never, I guess. It's tough, it really is. Makes you wanna cry. But you cannot rely or/and wait on others, you gotta make these moves for yourself and move on. I had some tough times, still do, but I hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I really hope so man. You can't cry cause you don't wanna be caught lackin. Move or die basically. Btw man. Iman has a great mindset, very healthy and people can take this as an example on how and where to put your money. If your parents cannot teach you how to balance with money, then who's going to? People overrestimate AND underrestimate money. That's how those issues become issues in the first place. Sorry for the long text y'all. I just... had things on my mind. I hope everybody who struggles or has struggles makes it out for real. Keep pushing, applyin pressure no matter what.
