Part 2 of 2. In this second installation, we'll take imagery and elevation and make a map that looks like Eduar Imhof's with painterly tricks of shading and atmospheric perspective.
In part 1, we learned about Imhof's way of painting and mapping, and took his map apart so we can learn how to put ours together. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-prCju9hOgEU.html
Here is the ArcGIS Pro style file used in this video: esriurl.com/imhof

Love it! Could this be done on ArcGIS Online Map, like you have shown with the Porcelain Style?
@JohnNelsonMaps
@JohnNelsonMaps 2 года назад
not really, because it depends on the green tinted overlay elevation layer rendering with a "dynamic range" so that the lower elevation green areas are always appropriate to the current view. if it were set globally, it would look bad almost everywhere.

will try that with ambient occlusion from previous tutorial

Amazing videos, thanks! If I make some maps myself to sell in public for fun, what should I do for source citation to give credit for data is that necessary for copyright like usgs data for example ?? Thanks for the videos

ArcGIS Pro will automatically populate a citation text for some layers that require it. but if you add your own layers, just be sure to credit them.

Hello, fantastic work ! Is there a way to use those gradients with arcgis desktop ? Thanks.
@JohnNelsonMaps
@JohnNelsonMaps 3 года назад
Not even close, sorry. But the good news is if you have a license to desktop you also have a license for Pro.

@@JohnNelsonMaps thanks John, my idea was to actually get the colour ramps and use them in another package 🤭 Hence the arcgis desktop style that can be converted. I've found out that the desktop version doesn't actually handle transparency in ramps so yes, not a single chance indeed. Have you considered sharing the values of colour, alpha transparency, and spacing ?

@@trollenz I’d love for you to have them. Yes the entirety of this style is available as a style file and also a Pro project package. You can find it here: esriurl.com/nelsonstyles

Hey I’ve followed this video before and it worked great, any idea why now at the step creating the hillshade layer, nothing happens? Tried this 5 times now and it’s just the same grayscale, no shape/light

1) Hellow John! I have some queries: how i can able to export the final output as a onelayer in geotiff format and the resolution will not break while doing zoom in and zoom out. 2) Also if i apply a colour ramp in a hillshade how i can export the geotiff file with the same colour ramp as an output. So that i can used this layer as a base map. kindly help me in it 🙏
@JohnNelsonMaps
@JohnNelsonMaps 2 года назад
hi Debobrata! you can export any map or layout as a geoTIFF. This is a handy wat to create a static export of a map as a single layer for use in other maps. panning and zooming is harder though, because a big part of the Imhof technique described here uses "dynamic range" so it's not such a straightforward task. i've not figured that out yet.

oh no! well i have noticed that if i leave my map in wgs84, instead of projecting it, the results are bland and brownish. have you tried giving the map a projection? it's strange that it has such a huge effect, but it does.
