I rolled the dice on a new JCB auger from auction. Thought I'd share my experiences getting it up and running and dropping a fence post or two.

Were your connectors identical? Ours are the same connector on each hose, and of course, there is no documentation to show configurations, if it needs oil before use, how much oil, etc. I probably should have bought a name brand, but took a flyer on this at an auction.

Mine came with different connectors on the different hoses. In general these hoses go on the top and bottom auxiliary connectors (assuming you have the standard three connector auxiliary panel). If you purchased a JCT auger then there is no separate gearbox that needs oil, there is just a hydraulic motor (which is lubricated by the same hydraulic fluid that drives it). The hydraulic motor is bi-directional (unlike some of the mulcher heads, etc) so it shouldn't matter which hose goes in which port (just make sure that you select "variable flow" vs "max flow" on your machine when you use this). I've now used mine a bunch more (all of which is around our farm, not in a commercial or production environment) and have been suprisingly pleased with how well it has performed so far (knock on wood!). Hope that helps.

Would you pay $850 again?

That is a great question. I am using it just on our ranch, not in a production environment, so it gets used a few times a month. Most recently I had it out last week to auger a couple of 12" x 60" holes for a security gate (it worked great). Right now, my answer would be "yes", I'd pay $850 for it again. The only issue I've had so far is that I've chipped one of the carbide teeth (but it is still serviceable). I think a real test for it will be when I use it to drill the piers for our new tractor shed, which will need 18 piers at 18" x 48" each.
