This may be an unpopular opinion to some of you but honestly the war in Gaza is such a low priority issue for me. It’s a messy, complicated war that barely involves the US. We have so many more pressing and more impactful issues at home. It’s been almost five months since this war has started. Shouldn’t we care more about our own democracy? Or our own reproductive rights? Or our own environment or economy? What about the ever increasing consolidation of corporations and threat of AI? What about immigration? What about all the other non-foreign policy issues that the majority of swing voters actually care about? Dont misunderstand me. I feel for Palestinians living in the US. I get it. I get their anger. But at the same time, the right is trying to strip abortion access for woman. They’re coming for birth control. They are opposed to any and all measures to help the climate. They want to use legislation to attack political enemies. They’re trying to re-write rules to turn us into a fascist Christian state and they aren’t even trying to hide that fact anymore. I’m sorry, but the very real threats domestically take precedent over foreign affairs for me. I’d also caution reactionaries to really stop and think if they’d rather an experienced statesmen be at the helm, who is probably the only realistic shot at getting a ceasefire in place, or if they’d prefer the guy who threatened to use a Nuke on Twitter.

I am not on either side of this debate. I see tragedy everywhere. Thousands of dead Israelis, thousands of dead Palestinians. The pain in this area of the world is millenia old. Freeing hostages as a prereqisite for a cease fire to negotiate a lasting peace sounds like a sane policy to me. But no negotiator can force two parties to agree who only want the destruction of the other.

I have a completely different point of view. (And, by the way, I do think these people in Michigan have an absolute right to vote "uncommitted.") The current plight of the Palestinians is due to Hamas, which is supported, though, by many Palestinians. Hamas violated an existing cease fire on October 7 in the most horrific way possible. I suggest you read a recent NYT article describing what they did to young Israeli women. Not just rape. Mutilation and rape. And then taking hostages--most of whom were civilians--and parading them through Gaza, to cheers of the Palestinians. It seems that the world took barely one hot minute to acknowledge the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, then quickly pivoted to blaming Israel. Because of what happened on October 7, Israel is defending itself. To the Michiganders and others demanding a cease fire, I'm wondering how they would react if 1200 people in their community were senselessly murdered. Would they do everything possible to prevent such an event from happening again? Or bow to the demands of those who perpetrated the event.
