Impellitteri: The Complete Beast - A Journey Through Melodic Heavy Metal Mastery
In the realm of guitar virtuosos, Chris Impellitteri stands tall, often mentioned alongside legends like Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert, and Steve Vai. His band, Impellitteri, has carved a niche in the melodic heavy metal genre, delivering riffs and solos that resonate with fans worldwide. Now, for the first time outside Japan, the entirety of Impellitteri’s work from their 1987 debut to 2009’s ‘Wicked Maiden’ is collected in a monumental 6CD box set, “The Complete Beast,” released by Global Rock Records, part of Cherry Red.
This comprehensive collection is not just for die-hard Impellitteri fans but serves as a gateway for anyone with a penchant for melodic heavy metal. Featuring vocal powerhouses Graham Bonnet and Rob Rock, the set spans a career filled with high-octane riffs, soaring vocals, and the kind of guitar wizardry that leaves listeners in awe.
Each CD in the box set represents two albums the original artwork for each album is featured on the front and back. The accompanying booklet, though lacking in-depth interviews or essays, offers photos and album credits.
The music itself is full on riffs and soaring vocals, I personally missed Impellitteri’s rise during the crowded late ’80s metal scene. From the opening riffs of “Stand in Line” to the intricate compositions of “Wicked Maiden,” it’s clear that Impellitteri was not just another band lost in the glam metal shuffle. Their music possesses a unique blend of technical proficiency and melodic sensibility, with Chris Impellitteri’s guitar work deserving every accolade it receives.
The set’s highlight is undoubtedly the inclusion of previously hard-to-find albums and EPs, making “The Complete Beast” an essential collection for both new listeners and long-time fans.
While the box set might benefit from a more detailed booklet, perhaps with insights into the band’s history and Chris Impellitteri’s guitar techniques, it’s a minor quibble in an otherwise stellar package. The sheer volume of music, over six hours across six CDs, offers a comprehensive look at a band that has managed to stay relevant in the ever-evolving heavy metal landscape.
“The Complete Beast” is a testament to Impellitteri’s enduring legacy in the world of heavy metal. It’s a journey through the band’s evolution, showcasing their ability to blend shredding guitar solos with memorable melodies. For those who’ve followed the band since their debut, this box set is a great way to have all the albums in one place, for newcomers, it’s an invitation to discover one of the genre’s most underrated acts.

That band is new to me as well. I’m completely shocked. Thank you for the discovery 👍 they do a great great version of since you’ve been gone. I found it fresher than the rainbow version. I remember seeing the band Head East playing that song live in 1979. Anyway thank you Phil cheers from Houston 🇺🇸✌️

I didn't even know that they had released this box set. I had to hunt these down over the years after being an Impellitteri fan since the late 90's as a teenager and I have personal contact with Chris Impellitteri himself. I am going to order this. Impellitteri were one of those highly talented groups who sort of got hidden in the sea of 80's heavy metal and were found only by the most hardcore of metal fans, especially those who are nuts about shred guitar. They are very popular in Japan because it seems that they still appreciate shred guitar.

I had the pleasure 7 years ago of watching Graham bonnet perform the title track to stand in line in my local rock club. Terrific song and a great album as you said Phil

I love Impellitteri! Unfortunately I had to buy their CDs as Japanese imports when they were released. The albums after Stand In Line weren’t released in the United States. I’m glad you discovered this band now. It cost me a lot of money to be a fan back in the day but it was worth it.

Thanks Phil, for mentioning and reviewing Impellitteri on your channel. This is one of my favorite bands and since 1988, with their debut EP, I have been a fan. I bought and still have the EP and Stand In Line on LP. I also have them all on CD and in their Japanese versions, which was the only way they were available. Also, having them signed by Rob Rock when I had the opportunity to meet him in 2002 and some signed by Chuck Wright as well.

Chris rules & Rob rocks! However not sure if I'll get me this box set since I'm one of the biggest Impellitteri fan since the 1st EP and got all albums on vinyl and/or CD, but of course a great box! Thank you for another great review on another great box set from another great & favorite band of mine/ours, my Rock'n'Roll & Heavy Metal brother from another mother! Rock on, Phil! 🤘😎

I've never heard of this group, so a box set like this is the perfect way to dive all in. I think I would prefer individual sleeves with the track listing on them rather than only the artwork.

I bought Stand In Line when it came out in 1988. It's a great album. I like every track, from Goodnight and Goodbye to the instrumental of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The cover of Since You've Been Gone was kinda unnecessary, but it's ok. In the original CD liner notes Chris states : "To all our fans I promise my guitar solos will only get faster"! Graham Bonnet was incredible in the 80s. He was the vocalist on 3 of my favorite albums... the first 2 by Alcatrazz and Assault Attack by MSG. I bought System X when it came out and also like it. I haven't heard the other albums without Bonnet. Last year I ordered some cool t-shirts, including No Parole from Rock 'n' Roll and... Stand In Line! 🤘

I wouldn’t have heard about the band if I wasn’t a fan of Graham’s. That said I only own Stand In Line and System X with him on them. Oh, and the first EP I have as well. That one came with the the Stand In Line 2CD edition. I should finally check out the other albums as well.

Hi Phil pretty much the same for me,I am not a glam/hair metal fan so like yourself the bands looked the same sounded the same bored and many one and done bands, which people say should have been big etc But sometimes gems stick . Rob Rock is great and like Graham Bonnett a journeyman but excellent vocalists. If you get a chance there's a great interview on The Metal Voice RU-vid channel with Chris Take care cheers Jonathan

That name is like 'What the heck is that? It's like Harryhausen!' I heard Dee Snider say it Im-pell-a-terry and that's the only time I've heard it stated so I'm going w/ that. Im-pell-i-tri is the UK saying. Either way awesome music.😊 Cherry Red has it for £34 and and Amazkn has it for $39, pretty much the same price.

I thought the name was that for an Italian pop band. Until I saw the Stand In Line video. Then I heard that the band was named after the guitarist so it made more sense. Love this band.

I own most of these albums already, otherwise I’d scoop this up. This band made waves in the late 80s but never took off in popularity, unfortunately.
