God I love this scene. A simple Star Destroyer was colossal in itself, a testament to the Empire's power. Then comes the Super Star Destroyer that covered all in it's shadow. I remember getting goosebumps as kid.

And the new movies want you to believe that both ships are capable of flight within a planet's atmosphere and gravity well.

The TIE fighters buzzing around made it seem almost like a beehive as they darted back and forth between the monolithic Star Destroyers that floated by slowly. And then, eclipsing them all is the Executor. It was instantly chilling, and the buzzing of the TIE fighters made it almost seem like an attack dog chomping at the bit.

This movie really made us aware of the stakes. The imperial fleet was already dreaded by the rebels, then we see Vader’s personal ship that is absolutely gargantuan. Then after that, we see directly that Vader kneels before and takes orders from an even higher up Dark Sider. Makes us realise that the victory at Yavin really was a very lucky flicker of light in overwhelming darkness.

This is the defining scene of Empire, and reflects the theme, ie, the Empire striking back with its overwhelming massive resources. I remember thinking the Star Destroyers (an odd name - they don't destroy stars) were huge when I saw one chasing Princess Leia's ship in the opening scene of the original Star Wars movie. Then I saw a Star Destroyer going into the shadow of a Super Star Destroyer (initially I was wondering what was casting the shadow) and then saw the two ships near each other in this scene in The Empire Strikes Back. Wow! The size of that mother! No wonder President Skroob in Spaceballs (a spoof of Star Wars) said after running to the bridge "The ship is too big. If I walk the movie will be over".

It's just amazing to see - after the first movie, with the destruction of the Death Star, a lot if people probably thought the Empire is weakened, on the brinks of collapse, some might say but no - this scene tells a whole different story! The Empire was weakened on that day !but! it's florishing, still expanding - not just it's arsenal of weapons, it's fleet but also it's territory. It became more determined to annihilate what it sees, as a now serious threat, the Alliance. The sole purpose of this fleet we see on the screen, 'Death Squadron' under the command of Lord Vader himself. And that is also a story that this single scene tells us. God I love the old movies.

When I saw the shadow fall on the Star Destroyer then see the monster ship that made the shadow absolutely blew my mind. Seeing that as a kid in the 80s was just awesome. Had to make my own ship setup for my figures as a kid. No idea if there was a play set but I made due. Good times.

Watched this when 11years old, this scene was mind blowing and heart stomping watching the crawling star destroyer and then eclipsed by the gigantic super star ship. Shows Star Wars magnificent hallmark scene - the power of the emperor.

This must have been one of "big curillian ships" Han mentioned in the first film when he boasts to Obi-Wan and Luke about outrunning starships in his Millenium Falcon. "I've outran Imperial starships...not the local bulk cruisers, mind you...I'm talking about the big curillian ships now."

Troller Smith Corellians are really good at building ships, both the Empire and the Alliance use Corellian-built ships. That includes the company that built the TIE's, the SD's, and the INCOM class ships like Corellian Corvettes (like Tantive IV's), INCOM T65 X-Wings, Y-Wing series, and various other aircraft.

This music is so ingrained in us that it's hard to remember that this scene, with the Executor, was the first time the Imperial March was ever heard. I watched this in the theatres so long ago... don't remember my reaction, probably I was too awed and stupefied. :P

***** The empire survived for a good period of time after the deaths of Darth Vader and Darth Sideous. Its like with countries, the loss of your political leader is pretty serious, but the entire country won't collapse because just a few officials get axed off.
