Of all the Total Wars games, Empire is definitely one of if not the most ambitious in the series. It was the first iteration of the brand new Warscape engine that we still use today. And From the visually stunning Naval combat or the gunpowder skirmishes of Empire battles to the awesome new technology trees, getting into this game for the first time as a teenager was a hell of a time.
But it did have its, shall we say, unpolished side. The AI often didn’t know how to use the systems it came with and is generally everyone’s first complaint about the game. The Warscape engine while decent enough for ranged combat showed its issues when it came to melee scuffles & just from a “will the game run properly” perspective it’s quite unstable compared to other titles.
Luckily though we have mods that make it an absolute gem of a game and today’s spotlight is on one such mod! Imperial Splendour may not be as complete as Darthmod but with the latest 1.2 Update released yesterday it's certainly one of if not the best modded Empire you can play today.

Love Empire, love its timeline, love its combat. However, I don't think I can ever go back, the inability for modders to add and create new land and split provinces was saddening. Because the biggest frustration in Empire, is the fact that places like FRANCE is just one massive province, and if Paris is taken even by one army or random army, the French lose everything immediately.

@@moisuomi I have recently played Darthmod as Spain. Britain conquered France and all French colonial possessions turned to rebel territories, EG Martinique became a Pirate state, so it definitely is the case. I also took Amsterdam earlier and all Dutch provinces turned rebel. On the other Britain will survive until England, Scotland and Ireland are taken out.

Empire Total War will always hold a special place in my heart. I've done multiple campaigns with Darthmod and this mod looks like a refreshing way for me to get back into the game

So I've kind of come to the realization that the possible reason for one province countries in ETW is it's supposed to represent the more centralized way of ruling that was becoming more and more of a thing during this era of history. 'Colonies' and other conquered territories are more decentralized because they are separate from the homeland even if they are under your rule, empires like Russia or Prussia were more regional powerhouses, so it makes sense that their territories are not represented as centralized as a power like France or the UK, who were more focusing on colonization than anything else. Still while I can understand and even appreciate this design philosophy, I think CA if they make a E2TW needs to make it a bit more decentralized, as there was a lot more to a government than it's centralization back then, and also purely from a gameplay standpoint it's very satisfying too.

For those who want to play this mod, beware, you will have lots of random crashes. I generally never have any issues with mods. This mod was staightforward to install, however it keeps crashing during AI turns, or simply by moving around the map, or whenever. I think its highly unstable. Crashed twice in 15 minutes.

I downloaded this mod a few weeks ago and im really loving it. The more unique cities and the ship variations are my favourite so far. But overall it's extremely good mod. I just tweaked how many men were in each unit. Made them a few more. Standard line infantry upto 250 men. Makes the battles a little better.

Has like a blue flag thing on his thumbnails. He does cover it in one of his.....swedish playthroughs....maybe prussia with imperial splendour mod playthrough

Lme4 for Napoleon total war is for me the best mod for this era in solo campaign for me: skilled AI on battlefield, HUGE number of units for big factions and possibly huge number of troops on NTW by up the scale size of units in campaign in the scripts. Only problem for me are the low number of ammo and vanilla firing stats (to precise), i would like a slower pace of battle. Except that it’s almost perfect !

Looks awesome dude! Thanks for showcasing it for us 👍I like the idea of balanced units for empire. In other eras (like rome) it makes sense for some empires land armies to dominate over others. But for empire, I think it makes more sense for the units of most nations to be comparable to each other :)

Indeed because every mod like this claims to have improved the AI but that is not possible. They can change some of the scripting and change the data (ranges, costs, effects etc) but they cannot change the programming. You will still have the same bugs as before regardless of any mod you play, a mod may just make some of them less apparent.

I just finished a French campaign in the previous version 1.19 not knowing this update was dropping like a couple days later … anyways I found the mod to be overly difficult, with the economy specifically being broken. It seemed like the AI one province minors could field unlimited (expensive) armies and fleets and made the game not fun. For example, I’m a veteran player and only managed to field 2 full 20 stack French armies while barely turning a budget surplus while little wuttermberg could field 4. Furthermore, navies like Sardinia could field 10 2nd rate SOL while building one costs 8 grand. Does the AI just get free money? Luckily I am able to defeat the AI in combat outnumbered 3-1 but it made the campaign an abysmal slog where I was only able to hold my starting territory and expand my borders a tad before 1803.

I had the exact same experience with previous version playing Britain. I soon found I was facing multiple fully stacked armies of Iroquois and Cherokee in Canada, while being permanently broke and taking forever to recruit enough troops to fight them off, let alone advance anywhere. Even the pirates were cruising around with a full stack of ships right off the bat. Every turn was deciding whether to buy a cheap building OR military unit, then clicking end turn. Once I'd concluded it was likely impossible to win the short campaign because of no funds and massive AI forces, I threw the towel in. The Rights Of Man mod or Darthmod are more fun to play. Having huge rosters and fancy graphics etc is all very well but if you can't afford to recruit any of them or actually fight a war then start without me...

I play only normal difficulty snd totally agree. This is the main problem for every mod, they polish some parts of the game but really f.cked up the other parts. And all mods are overrated. Yeah they are not doing this for money but it is our time and we need to know the reality about the mod before we waste our time in it.. not the advertisement videos ..

If you have a lot of hard drive space I suggest you keep copies of your big empire folder with different mods as backups. That way you can switch them out when you wanna play different mods. But yeah its annoying

i just download the mod and i have a few questions, why all my toops' accuacy just terrible? both my troops and ai's troop can't shoot at the target and maybe like 3min only few people die even though they shoot at each other at very close range, i started the hanover campaign and i bought a yeager and it got 70 accuracy, but they can't kill anyone, is their any submob i need to download?

Checking out these new mod updates is some exciting stuff. I'm really liking Total War again. I'm currently playing the minor factions mod for Naploeon as Greece (VH/VH) and I've never felt like such an underdog. Overcoming the Ottomans was a breeze, & I grinded early for navy so I got tons of money which helps me to generously compensate Venice and Courland in to joining an alliance and helping me to fight the French. Russia is also a big help. I also tried liberating Romania and Hungary to use as a buffer between me and Austria but Romania betrayed me. Hungary was a very reliable ally against Austria and Prussia but when Napoleons armies started to engage me I had no choice but to abandon the front and regroup. So I ended up giving Romania and Hungary to Russia next time I was able to push back. Austria obviously did not survive Napoleons armies during this time. Same for Prussia, considering I payed Russia to break their alliance lol. & right now I'm currently using Bohemia as a front line while helping Courland and Russia push in the North. Venice is also coming in clutch to the South. I'm spending the vast majority of my income to keep Venice and Russia happy and well oiled. Also the UK seems fine doing absolutely nothing, despite me constantly paying them to stay at war with Napoleon. But it's been a wild ride of a campaign and definitely the bloodiest and most challenging for me. Even more than WRE in Attila.

I know some mods work well enough with them, such as basic file changes such as unit changes. I got the 100000 deaths achievement in a handful of battles as Sweden.

I love how even in Napolean total war. The AI send their generals to scout and be destroyed, first in every engagement, no matter what mod is used.... Hard to enjoy this game when it's still this broken.

You need them, hence why there is even a Modding community to start with :), otherwise they would be Developer's if they decided to make a game. W/o modders though, the total war titles would be stale. They added flavor replayability etc.

There needs to be a new release of the game without the AI bugs and idiocy in it. Modders cannot fix them, they are coding issues which no amount of startup scripts and database editing will ever fix.

Can anyone help with an explanation about the cost of things? I posted months ago but no response. Does anybody else's money change after the first turn as any nation I play as after I end the first turn every building becomes really expensive and my income per turn drops, I don't mind if this is the case for everyone else and how can I make more money if so? Thanks for the heads up on the update. I am stuck emotionally playing Poland so glad that all factions allows me to continue! Plus it seems (so far) to play well with Darth Mod if I make sure to reset startup back to vanilla. The artwork is very nice and changes the game to look very elegant, I really appreciate the work that went into this, very classy ... music as well..

What I cannot understand is the late starting date imperial splendour offers ... such a lot of buildings are already built, lot of techs are already learnt and the campaign thus gets shorter than vanilla... if not played ETW recently your are literally overwhelmed with the huge empires like England f.e. , Austria is not playable.... which lets me wonder if Imperial Splendor does any changes if you choose Vanilla campaign which would be much more interesting than the late startdate from I.S., and whats with the recommendation on I.S. site not to do anything at turn one?

Great review. Other than a few crashes this game is great. The visuals kinda suck, but the perfection of the armies and navies and the historic accuracy of the names of factions and units……truly a masterpiece.

I stopped playing Empire Total War (with or without mods) just because of unit regeneration. Clicking on 120 + units and manually restoring them every turn is just not acceptable and a really stupid management system. Does this have auto-regen like Napoleon TW?

Even if you are interested in multiplayer: as long as both players have the same version of both the game and mod installed correctly they would be able to play together.

how is it stability wise? I'm hooked with Empire 2 mod but you can only play the late campaign because the early campaign crashes without fail after 35 turns, might give this a go instead.

@@YeetThyBaby IS:RotR doesn’t have any savegame breaking error as far as we can tell. We encourage the community to share their experience with us and are always looking for that kind of errors. You can still get some campaign CTD’s but those are solved by saving (with ctrl+s) before passing turns or playing battles, takes no time. I’m the case you encounter one of those (at most 1 each 10 turns, though it’s usually less) you can just relaunch the game, load the quick save and try again (always work).

I just want a pike and shot total war, or some total war about the ACW or Crimean/Prussian wars (late napoleonic wars basically)

Hey there Terminator! Yet another great mod review, sir! So I downloaded the mod as per your instruction link and all went well. However when I tried to play the mod for the first time the opening screen appeared with the Darthmod logo and then went into the Imperial Splendour opening screen. I pressed the "switch" to select the Imperial Splendour mod to play however none of the factions are playable! So I fired up my Darthmod version of ETW and made sure that I chose the "restore to vanilla" option when I exited the mod. Then tried to play Imperial Splendour again and now when I press the "switch" to go from Vanilla ETW to Imperial Spendour an error message overlay appears stating "We ran into an error we didn't expect. Your files and status may be out of sync. Please let us know about the issue ...". Do you (or any other commenters) know what is going on and how to fix this? Thanks in advance for any help! :)

Hi mate! Do you have both Darthmod and IS? Installed? In which case you will have to remove Darth. If not sounds like you may need a clean reinstall. Also make sure to get the faction unlocker submod!

@@TheTerminatorGaming Quick update. So removed Darthmod Empire and had to reinstall Imperial Splendour mod. Now able to access IS mod using the "switch" function. As I kept seeing "not playable" under the Nation Description except for the United States. I also downloaded the faction unlocker mod. Now when I access IS, I still do not see any info under Nation Description except for the United States, however I tried to play some of the other nations noted as being "not playable" under Nation Description and they seem to be working as I can get to their starting location. Got me wondering if you are seeing Nation Descriptions for all the nations rather than the "not playable" message when you go into the grand campaign?

I do see their descriptions yep. Might be worth just jumping into the mod discord and asking for help then. The modders are very friendly and quick to reply :)

I bought this TW, but have yet to play it. I honestly have to many TWs to give my attention to all of them. However, If I was to mod this for a first play through, what would be a good choice to try for a solid experience?

I'd say go vanilla, the start date of this mod it's too late compared to vanilla and many smaller cities are alredy grown, that's a big thing in this game, i never tried this mod but i prefer vanilla over Imperial Destroyer for instance because instead of adding more it removes stuff from the game.

@@LannisterGI This mod is actually Imperial Splendour, not Destroyer 😅 and although you can find many cities “developed”, it wouldn’t be a good job if we didn’t improved gameplay elsewhere. Furthermore cities never stop growing so RotR aims not to offer reduced mechanics or gameplay for the sake of the starting year but to offer a different gameplay based on a realistic reconstruction of a period just different to the one of vanilla empire. And vanilla Empire although has a large span of years it fails in authenticity for that same reason.

I would suggest playing vanilla first, then when you’re comfortable you can try IS:RotR, it’s not the easiest mod (although you can always play it on easy) but you’ll find a carefully curated experience on it.

yes we know that during a campaign there will be around 5 crashes mostly on Persia's turn. Those crashes might be mod related but do not harm the autosave you have on ending a turn. You can start Empire again and the crash will not happen again. There might be other crashes too but you would have to ask the CA about them. Btw Mughals aren't tested.

My favorite empire mod but the newest update is too buggy the new naval tree and its ships simply dont work and the historical portraits are just random gunna wait till they update it and hopefully fix
