A playthrough on Vic Tokai's 1992 shoot 'em up for the Super Nintendo, Imperium.
Played through on the hard difficulty level.
Imperium is an excellent shoot 'em up that, though not the best one on the SNES, deserved much more fanfare than it ever received. It sold poorly and got very little coverage in magazines, and it ended up becoming one of those games that most people probably haven't ever even heard of, let alone played. The prices skyrocketed on the cart once it caught the eye of collectors and price-gouging eBayers, but if you ever get the opportunity to try it out, I highly recommend it.
Imperium might not be much to look at in screenshots, but man is it pretty when it's in motion! The detail of the sprite design in some places - wow! And those bosses! That scrolling cityscape in stage one always impressed me quite a bit, too - it's quite the memorable way to kick off the game.
The music, on the other hand, is unfortunately a bit of a mixed bag. Some of the compositions are truly extraordinary, and they do shine through at times, but the samples are awful and badly undermine the music's potential. It's all written as rock and metal, but half the time it sounds like a wonky calliope.
One thing that really stands out in this game is its power-up system. There aren't any weapon power icons to grab, but rather, as your score serves as an experience gauge, and you have to gain levels to upgrade the four guns you are armed with. Each can grow to a level 3 weapon, but your current gun loses a level if you are hit. While it sounds obnoxious, since each gun level shields your ship against damage, this nicely extends the amount of punishment you can absorb before going down.
And Imperium is happy to dish out the punishment. It's not a challenge on the same level as Super R-Type, but it is certainly no slouch. The normal mode is pretty reasonably paced, but I really had to practice to finish it on hard without getting a game over. I certainly enjoyed the test of skill, though.
It surprised me to learn that it was developed by Jorudan, as well. You might know them from their work developing Musya and Xardion (yeah, those mechs look familiar, don't they?), but if you know those games, dont worry. Even though this was made before either of those games, it is far superior to both of them. Musya and Xardion both suffered from huge ambitions and a lamentable lack of programming skill. Imperium realizes its potential in ways that those two games really should have.
If you enjoy the old classic 16-bit shoot 'em ups, Imperium is about as obscure and as niche of a title as you're going to find, but despite its complete lack of popularity, there is a lot to appreciate here.
*This video is a brand new recording to replace an older, far lower quality playthrough I had of the game in my SNES playlist. Make sure to watch it at 60fps!

My dad bought me this game after a long day of working at the family business. Took me to pawn shop to buy since times were tough and couldn’t buy me new games. Anytime I play this or hear it it reminds me of my dad. I love him so much :)

Imperium is probably the best SNES shooter that you never played - it seems to not even appear on most people's radar, but don't take that as a warning sign. It's a thoroughly excellent game with a unique feel and personality, and if you're a fan of the genre, it's well worth a playthrough or ten.

And the game takes place in the year 2027 AD, why did we not advanced this high? Were we suppose to have Neon Night Riders as seen in TMNTs IV: Turtles in Time?

@@dansmith1661 And if we take a very good look at the Sega Genesis game called Grey Lancer, that game takes place in the year 2025 and they have spaceships floating around . . . spaceships in 2025! I mean seriously, we where suppose to have these things but nope, we don't have them yet and we where suppose to.

I have took a look to ebay and some people is requesting like 150$ for a complete in box copy for both american or japanese version, it is expensive but at least it is not as forbidden than the 400$ that some people request for a complete in box copy of Sparkster for SNES. I like shoot em up, but I haven't put my finger and time into more games from the genre, I am glad that out there are serious fans from this genre that enjoy a lot playing the games. My biggest love is Gradius and its entire universe, maybe I will meet the biggest fan of "Imperium" someday. Thank you very much for upload this again with better quality, Alex, much appreciated the extra effort.

I bought this game for like 6 bucks at Blockbuster back in 1996. Though I'd already moved onto Playstation months earlier, I still played my SNES off and on. Wasn't a bad shoot-em-up.

I completely missed out on this one until a few years ago. Finally fired it up via an emulator. It's a really fun game (and beatable, too!), but OY VEY that music. Tenpei Sato is a great composer, so you gotta wonder just what went wrong here. To me, music is probably the most important aspect of a game, especially retro games (modern games use too much ambient music for my tastes, or just generic orchestral compositions. It's mostly forgettable), yes, even over gameplay, as it's what I'll remember 20 years down the road. The SNES was capable of far, far better in that department.

I agree on music, it's even more important for a shooter, because you can't control the pace you need something great to listen to, and some nice backgrounds to look at. Imperium is slow at times and has some parts with no enemies on screen for substantial amounts of time, it's at it's worst in the desert level, which also has the most boring track unfortunately. The loud enemy explosion sound really doesn't help I always bring it up when I get the chance, but they made strange changes between regional releases of this game, it's very unusual, I've never seen changes this substantial besides decap attack on the Genesis. The US version actually has some different tracks for a few levels and bosses. I think It's overall a worse version .

I wonder if this is the game that triggered Vic Tokai's SNES hatred lol. In case anyone is curious, look up Battle Mania (JP version of Trouble Shooters)'s secret intro on the MegaDrive ...

Looks fairly mediocre and tedious if you ask me. If unoriginal too. It takes place only 8 years from now and they misspelled "disappeared"! Needs more bunny girls and completely unnecessary fanservice. *Parodius* this is not! In all seriousness, want another decent and completely overlooked gem of a shooter with the protagonist piloting a mech/ship hybrid and upgradeable weapons? Try *Arrow Flash* for the Genesis! It's a Gradius clone with excellent music and I highly recommend that one as well.
@Dorelaxen
@Dorelaxen 5 лет назад
I mean, to be fair, every space shooter after Defender was unoriginal. This is actually a decent game. It's no Axelay or Darius Twin, but it's an hour or so of fun. Try it in an emulator, just turn the music down and put something else on.

Gradius, Parodius, Otomedius, Salamander and the rest of shoot em up by Konami are my universal love for the genre. But I should put my nose onto more games from the genre. I will take your recommendation, I expect the best from a Gradius clone.

Oh, Arrow Flash? It is a good shmup for sure, I recently beat it without dying once, I freakin' love that game! The *Twinbee* series is also very good as far as vertical shooters go, too.

Agreed, look at those enemy design and animation. They are lazy as hell and the game mechanic is too damn bland, even Gradius 1 can surpass this game easily in this term.
