This whole theme about child birth and the atmosphere surrounding it makes sense when you realize every country in Southeast Asia, Indonesia included, has their own folklore beliefs and practices concerning pregnancy. Evil entity eating babies for example. Looooots of those.

Definitely should check out May The Devil Take You both 1 and 2 and the newly released The Queen of Black Magic. Three amazing Indonesian horror. All really gory, strongly acted, and steeped in local folklore and mythology. Queen is actually a spiritual sequel to a 1981 film of the same name

What a MASTERPIECE! It all makes sense when u learn that it's from the (South Korean) studio that gave us "The Wailing" MASTERPIECE! I continue to revel in the authenticity of foreign (non-Hollywood) films, especially, Asian ones! It's always pleasing to the soul to see a movie centered around a culture, language & people that's not what one is familiar with but this pleasure is further heightened when there are elements of strong realism e.g. in the scene where the guy is killing the 3 little kidnapped village girls by snapping their necks one by one, I loved how he struggled a bit with the last 2 to get a good grip, even though they were unresisting. Usually, u don't think about the small, trivial details like that cuz it's so easy for a grown man to snap a little girl's neck, but he first has to get a good grip and angle it just right to make that swift, clean break. This movie is a frikkin masterpiece and there are many such authentic, thoughtful, attention-to-small-details scenes that impact u throughout, but this one really got me by the soul, man! It just felt so... I dunno how to verbalize it... it just felt so right & real... And not that I'm glorifying the death of the little girls, either; I'm just glorifying how amazing it was for human beings to replicate it so perfectly on a movie screen! #MASTERPIECE #IMPETIGORE #Indonesia

We call the Shadow puppet as Wayang Kulit, kulit means skin...so it plays into the whole make the skin as puppet thing

Anyone remember this one movie , filmed in the late 90s or early 2000s, called something like "Demonico" or "Demonica"? It's a about a woman that is infected with some sort of virus, and since she is the first carrier or born with it, it's harmless to her, but she can partly turn into some sort of gargoyle demon, becomes black , and makes things glow orange. Whereas to the rest of the world the virus is deadly, yet similar to the likes of her, there is a man that can also turn into a fully gargoyle monster, he kills people and even uses his long tongue as a weapon. I remember a scene where she saves a child from a car. Aswell as one where a man puts his hand in a bag which contains the disease, and it starts spreading up his arm and melting it in the process. Before it is cut off with a machete by the man next to him, thus saving his life. And ofc the last battle between the main character of the movie - first carrier woman and the gargoyle man. The way i remember the final scene , he impales her through her chest with his tongue , but she uses the power of the virus to overcome the injury and empowers a garbage can lid , with the orange energy, before throwing it and taking the gargoyles head with it.

The curse is confusing. Does it stem from the grandmas curse on Maya or does it stem from the man killing the 3 girls? Maya joined the 3 girls skin with their bones which resulted in the newborn now born with skin. So I'm assuming based on that the curse on the village originated from the mans killing of the 3 girls. Which means the grandmas magic on Maya is a separate thing that only affected Maya. However, Maya said it was the grandmas magic on Maya that started the curse on the village, or did Maya really meant that the grandmas action is what set this all in motion. So which is it? Who set the curse on the village: The grandma or the man?

I wonder if the new version of the curse will be as all encompassing as the original. Or if it would have criteria as to which unborn baby it would claim. Like if it would specifically target babies conceived through infidelity since the partial reason for the very first version of the curse was to do away with Maya who -like her biological father- was illegitimate. Also, I think there were technically 3 versions of the curse in the movie. The first was ONLY to target Maya (and as far as we know DID only target her), the second targeted any unborn child in the village (assuming that since it was "cured" thanks to Donowongso's ritual, it then transformed into a more all encompassing curse set on any and all babies born in the village), & the third was Saptadi's mother becoming an evil spirit who targeted any and all of the babies or (according to my theory) specifically targeted children conceived via infidelity. Thoughts?

A little late, but I think the reason there are so many pregnant women is because it was timed perfectly for when Maya would have been killed and brought back to be made into a puppet.

Just to help with y'all who doesn't understand why they still have babies even when the curse is going: Indonesian (at least the ones in remote villages such as in the movie) thinks of procreation as something sacred that shouldn't be tampered with. No condom or birth control is usually allowed. Given the state of the home, I don't think this was set in modern times either (seems like the 80s or early 90s)

Poor maya. She had a really good loyal friend who was sceptical about the village and kept her friends identity hidden by pretending to be her and I’m glad that one villager helped her escape

Fun fact : the director of the movie( joko anwar ) said in a interview that dreamed about the village and that's why he made the movie

as an indonesian myself, i can tell you, indonesian horror myth and legends are countless, years of living as one, there are still more i didn't know, and many of the origin/story of it are pretty scary. as a story

When Maya was cut down I thought how painful it would be that no one helped break her fall and then I'll realized no one has even moved the bucket, so she fell headfirst into a metal bucket. Rough night.

The reason the village has so many children is that in the rural area, people often has no recreational activity. No TV, no phone, so they tend to turn to the good ol sex as a mean to pass time, and no one's selling rubber on an isolated village. That's why people in the rural area have so many children, back in the days it's normal to have more than 5 children.

A horror that actually got a good story and ending. Thats super rare nowadays

I was just about to sit down for a meal and was looking for something to watch as I ate Perfect timing, looks like I avoided a bad time

It's rare that the viewers can feel the unease and despair that the character feels when you're summarizing the movie. That's a sign that this is actually a good horror movie.

I love the twist that the old woman was actually the bad guy the whole time since until that point you think that she was trying to protect the villagers then the ending twist with her becoming the new cure as the baby eating ghost
