Thanks Jeff this was really helpful! One issue I was having is that the RCS export file type option doesn't appear unless you select 'aerial' as the project type and click the 3D point cloud box. It seems that you were able to export the RCS using the 'object' mode but I'm not seeing this currently in my ReCap for some reason. I did some tests using my drone (DJI Mavic Air 2) using both images taken from the drone and frame exports from the drone video. Even though I shot the video in 4K the quality of the model from the images was better. This takes a little longer to take the individual shots from multiple angles but if you are looking for the best resolution you should use drone images instead of frame exports from video. Also the size of the images was less than the size of the 4k video, plus you then had the size of the images from the frame exports on top of that. The object setting was also better for quality than the aerial setting, though the aerial setting would work fine if all you are looking for is background context...VDC 4 life!

Ingenious to mimic the drone, thanks for the video. Since this post have you compared pix4d vs drone deploy? I suspect drone deploy is good enough I use Matterport for interior and take the Matterport camera outside but have to use it at dusk or dawn (which is annoying), because the UV rays create misalignment. I currently import the Matterport scan into revit and maybe will try to switch to using the drone for outside, so will have two scans in revit. Thanks again for the video. I wonder if I should try and fly the drone inside the house lol, just kidding. But the matterport camera is good for that of course.

also when importing from recap I use .rcs like you mentioned, not rcp. I was told to use rcp a while back, which is supposedly better, not sure why

@guitarchitectural

I did this a while back, but used Google Earth instead. The screen recording technique is way better! My issue with it, though, is that you can't edit it. Typically we work on a site that has an existing building to be demolished. Is there a way to do that in Revit 2020+?
@TheRevitKid

Correct, this is for USING the site context that wont change. Any area that is being modified I will model in Revit and cut out the hole of the mesh from the recap file.

Good video. So, if I use Metashape to render my drone video/photos, then I can export an OBJ or RCS that can be directly imported into Revit? I think this would be handy on expansion projects when a 3d model, or even drawings, of the existing structure (that you are adding onto) does not exist. Can these items from a point cloud be used in the drafting, appear on sheets/sections, etc in Revit?
@TheRevitKid

Yes, OBJ will work... you will have to modify the scale and you may get a ton of edges. Point clouds work best performance wise in Revit

Question, your onky getting a small area and anything beyond is distorted. The main use for something like this is to get a large context model. So maybe you should zoom out, but since your recording at screen resolution the quality would probably be really low. Maybe you can export a few areas and combine them but not sure if that would work. What do you think? How would you export a large area without having low quality or distorted? Cheers
@TheRevitKid
@TheRevitKid 2 года назад
I've done some pretty large areas, but yes, quality is reduced. Depending on the size of the area and the desired output you may need a different approach. In my experience, ReCAP Photo doesn't do a great job stitching together multiple recordings of multiple areas...

This depends on your version of Recap. Do a little research.... I don't remember which version does or does not have RCP direct export.

Any way to bring the coordinates in?
@TheRevitKid
@TheRevitKid 2 года назад
There are ways in ReCap photo to set benchmarks (I believe). If not, you could always bring it into ReCap pro and treat it like a laser scan... I don't think you can do it BEFORE they process the images into a mesh... So, it may be a bit of back and forth.

Making photogrammetry mesh out of a photogrammetry mesh? Is this better then using renderdoc that extracts the actual data from google maps?
@TheRevitKid
@TheRevitKid 2 года назад
If you can get render docs to work... then it is a better option for sure. Me, I have tried many times and have not successfully extracted using RenderDocs

If you're in Recap pro... there is no exporting. Just save the file. THe file type of recap pro is "RCS"

From Polycam? You cannot export to RCS. YOu have to export to PTS and then convert it.

Any program that lets you export a video as individual frames (images) will do. Google it. There are hundreds of free and paid programs that can do it. I use Premiere Pro or Camtasia (premium programs).
