Back in about 1986 I became friends with Bill Winchell, the Left Waist Gunner, in Barrington, Illinois. At the time, I was a professional pilot and flight instructor. I taught Bill how to fly in my Cessna 172, when he was 70 years old, and I was 29, at Lake-In-The-Hills Airport in Crystal Lake, Illinois. He signed a copy of Menno Duerksen's book, The Memphis Belle for me with some very fine comments. What a guy!

The opening of the Memphis Belle exhibit was an incredible, three days long remembrance of our USAAF heritage, and for many of us a wonderful inter-service reunion with fellow military folks that I will remember and treasure for the remaining years of my life. Jeff Duford was a driving force behind the thirteen year efforts to bring this day to fruition. He deserves a large part of the credit for making the Belle story available to everyone. Thanks for everything, Jeff. Your research and devotion to the Belle will be appreciated by all of us for years to come!

We sometimes have our little spats, but the bravery and tenacity of the US fighting men can never be called into question. I thank them all.

I saw the Belle when I lived in Memphis and was glad it was moved from the "open bell type shelter" to a place more fitting where it was fully restored. Guess I need to go see how she looks all restored. I was stationed in Schweifurt 70-72 nand lived in a house owned by a worker at one of the bearing works. Our base was a former Luftwaffe fighter station and was told about them rounding up the parchuting crews of the B-17 aircraft shot down.

I saw the Belle at the NMUSAF last weekend. This is one of the best Museum displays I have seen. The attention to detail on the Restoration is obvious. If you understand what the Belle stands for as described in this video, you will get a lump in your throat when you see her.

So grateful to the US airmen who fought and died in the skies over Europe during world war two. This aircraft is a fitting tribute to their memory, we will not forget them, thank you.

I knew Jim Verrinis in CT, he was the co-pilot of the Belle. He volunteered to fly another 25 missions as a Pilot in Command, took some cojones to do that, knowing the odds..

The clips from the movie Memphis Belle are glorious! Can you comment on who cleaned them up and how that was done? They look much higher definition than i’ve ever seen before.

Hi Steve, our curator Jeff Duford went to the National Archives and made dubs from the actual film. Our foundation plans to show the 1944 Belle film here and that will be in 4K. Check our website for info if you are able to visit here. Best-Ken LaRock

Those were brave men. Takes a special kind of person to volunteer for a suicide mission.

I think its so great this great plane was restored by so many devoted people. however, with all the influx of money to restore her and work by so many, she should fly again at least for one flight. if she cant fly then this restoration was a sham. rebuilding motors that will never run, rebuilding flight surfaces that will never fly we a waste of money. a simple repaint would have been good enough for a museum prop. like it or not this is the facts

Larry, those are not the facts and the restoration was not a sham as you say. There was a lot of corrosion that needed to be repaired/replaced. You can't paint over corrosion so just a paint job would not have worked. Being the museum's photographer I can assure you our team did a fantastic job and the detail put into this is beyond amazing! If the aircraft were to fly but then crashed, you lose out on telling the story. We do not restore aircraft to flying status here. Our conservation and restoration work is directed at preserving the historical integrity and accuracy of an aircraft rather than achieving modern airworthiness.
