In 1983, Hero teamed up with Honda to establish Hero Honda, marking the debut of the iconic Hero Honda CD 100. Since its inception, this motorcycle has carved out a significant place in Indian history. Here’s why it captured the imagination of the nation and deserves a distinguished spot on the podium. India in the 1980s was markedly different. The streets were dominated by a diverse array of two-wheelers, primarily equipped with two-stroke engines. Models such as the Yamaha RX 100, Kawasaki Bajaj RTZ, the legendary Yamaha RD 350, and the Yezdi motorcycles reigned supreme. Meanwhile, the dependable Bajaj 150 scooter was the preferred choice among family-oriented individuals. These motorcycles provided exhilarating rides with commendable performance capabilities. However, they fell short in one crucial aspect: efficiency, which was increasingly becoming a priority for the country at that juncture. The bike was powered by a 96cc 4-stroke engine generating a 7.5bhp and 7.2Nm of torque. The bike featured a 4-speed gearbox.
The tagline "Fill it, shut it, forget it" made a significant impact. Coupled with this clever slogan, the company enlisted Bollywood heartthrob Salman Khan to endorse the new motorcycle. Boasting a claimed fuel efficiency of 80 kmpl, a feat considered almost magical at the time, the bike impressed. Its smooth 4-stroke engine provided a delightful riding experience for everyday users. Despite having a top speed of 80 kmph, which couldn't compete with the faster two-strokes on the market, its ability to cover long distances on a single tank of petrol was highly valued.
