Hey guys! Hope you enjoyed this look back at 1996 and one of the greatest surprises my Mom and Dad gave me as a child. I was a HUGE Mega Man fan with so many memories with the series, but this was up there with the best of them. How about you? What's your favorite Mega Man memory? Thank you retro-bit.com/ for the Collector's Set!

I collected all of them in the nes series but 1 and 4 (rented them at Blockbuster but never owned them as a kid). As an adult, had to find them in the wild to complete my nes set.

You do your Dad a wonderful service by sharing your experiences. I was fortunate enough to also have a father who went the extra mile to make sure my sister and I were surprised and delighted every birthday and Christmas. My Mom still talks about my Dad having to drive to another state to find me the official Ghostbusters Proton Pack. When I was 5 years old, I saw the old Disney movie "Babes in Toyland" and was mesmerized by the toy soldier fight scene. I thought it would be so cool to own toy soldiers like that, so that's what I asked Santa for. I had no idea they stopped making toys like about 80 years before I was born. My Dad went everywhere and even tried to import some from Europe, but he couldn't find anything that really ever resembled the movie. So instead, he bought me a very classic looking nutcracker and gave it to me (from Mom and Dad, not Santa) on Christmas Day. He told me the story and was very upset that he felt he let me down. Honestly though, I loved the nutcracker and I started collecting them after that. My parents got me a new one every Christmas for years and I still pick one up every now and again today. I display them proudly in my home every Christmas. My original one from Dad is miraculously still in great shape too for being roughly 37 years old.

I love this! Back in 1999, right after graduating and getting my first disposable income, I imported the European version and a PAL Mega Drive to play it on. Yes, I know you can mod a genesis but I had long since sold mine from my youth and I hoped that a PAL system would bypass the "it runs slow" problem. To this day I don't remember if it ran slow, lol. Maybe it was a placebo effect thinking I had the right system for the right game, or maybe I just didn't know any better. Either way, it didn't matter; the game was fantastic, looking like a Mario All Stars treatment of those classic Mega Man levels. I remember completing the first three games to get to Wily's tower, but not actually fishing it, something that shall be remedied some day! Thanks for sharing your story.

I think I speak for everyone when I say this series always brightens up my day. We all can relate in some way or another to your love for gaming and family. Love how your Dad did all the research & was always so quick to find a solution to playing any Japanese or Pal games. He had to have been a top tier expert on retro video games wish so bad we could've got game reviews from your dad I'm sure he would have some great things to say. Have you ever thought of doing game reviews? I've wondered how many home videos you have left to show , maybe when you post all of your footage you could review games or maybe do some lore videos about your favorite games

That Retro Bit Wily Wars release is glorious. Wily Wars looked great, and had a lot of nice quality of life improvements, but the 8-Bit soundtracks from the NES are still superior as far as I'm concerned. Also, it gets said a lot, but I'd just like to reiterate the obvious that your Dad was the best.

I didn’t have much money growing up but I somehow talked my mom into getting me the Sega Channel for about a year back in the 90s. It made me the envy of many of my friends. Sega Channel was one of those things that if you didn’t have it back in the day, it’s hard to describe how cool it was.
@Slash90ita
@Slash90ita 2 года назад
how it worked? always amaezed me how something like that (a gamepass like service) was possibile in the 90s! share some memory please!
@leeartlee915
@leeartlee915 2 года назад
@@Slash90ita Well… on the first of every month they would update the channel/service. Picture a website circa 1995. Very basic with very few graphics (just enough to make it scream “extreme Sega time”). On the main page, you’d have categories that kinda made no sense. A few did like “sports” but a lot of them would say stuff like “Action Adventure” or “Fun with Friends”. Once you clicked on the category, you’d get a list of games (also some of the games for the month would be listed multiple times in the different pages). Once you selected the game, a little progress/download thing would pop up. Once it was done, the game would boot up as if you had popped it into the system. And it would continue to act like you had the cart in the Genesis until you either powered down or reset. So it was kinda like the first game pass. Slow, with less options, but for the mid 90s? It was god damn close to magic. It was, no joke, one of my first real experiences using the internet (even though it technically wasn’t using the web. It was using the coax lines to transmit data directly from the cable companies. Back then, our service was TCI cable. Think they were bought by Comcast).

Well what makes Mega Man The Wily Wars special for me? Where do I begin. I didn't have a SNES or Mega Drive growing up. I was born in 93 so that's not the issue but my first memorys of gaming were on these systems while visiting friends. I loved the Battle Network series on GBA some crazy RPGs with interesting battle systems. When I saw the Mega Man classic series I was turned off at first. The face of 8Bit Mega Man just looked bizzare to me. Much later I learned about Wily Wars and the idea of giving 8bit games a 16bit remaster was apealing to me since I just prefer that visual style. Even in germany the original Wily Wars cart was extremly limited making the price ridiculessly high. I bought an unofficial repro of the game since capcom for some reason never rereleased Wily Wars. The game was just incredible. Not just the regular remasterd versions of Mega Man 1-3 but the Wily Tower mode was an awesome idea. Letting you choose between all the weapons from the first 3 games I absolutely love that. When the Mega Drive mini got announced everyone got crazy with game suggestions. Most of these made no sense to me since alot of the games were weird licenced games or 6-button games and we knew early that western version would ship with 3 button controllers. I begged and prayed so hard that we would get Wily Wars this way and in the end we did! The Mega Drive mini version even came with improvements to the slowdown of the original game which was my biggest complain. These games are awesome but there is never enough action of screen to justify any actual slowdown. When you see a game like Gynoug running buttersmove but Wily Wars has slowdown with just a few projectiles on screen you know the developer didn't try very hard. With the improvements of Wily Wars the Mega Drive mini quickly became my favorite mini console and it still is to this day. When retro bit announced an OFFICIAL rerelease of the game for original hardware I had to get my hands on one! They even said that some slowdown issues would be fixed. When the game came to me I was so hyped up. Finally I would play the perfect version of Mega Man Wily Wars on original hardware! Then I noticed that the slowdown was just as bad as with the original release/unofficial repro... For months I was annoyed by this and complained in youtube comments. Why did they say the slowdown would be fixed just to not fix anything? Silly me.... In Mega Man 1 there is a boss called the yellow devil. This is one of the most difficult bosses on the original NES. You only have a very limited time to damage him and his attack is very difficult to dodge since he basicly throws parts of his body in various hights at you. You need to perfectly dodge these attacks which is super difficult UNLESS the game slows down hard for some reason. This slowdown makes the original version of Wily Wars sort of an easy mode for Mega Man 1. The slowdown was somewhat fixed. hold "left+start+C" while unpausing the game to disable the slowdown in game. You can even play most of the game without slowdown and than enable the slowdown whenever you feel like it. For example when the game throws pretty much all the projectiles at you at once like during the battle with the yellow devil. This is still one of my absolute favorite retro games to this day and I replay it every now and than in whatever way I can. What else? The original video you put out on Pixelgamesquad is still my favorite episode of the Myretrolife series. So many awesome parts. Like when Brian mentioned "We actually played this yesterday" I think he ment the original NES version of Megaman 3. Or when you compared Mega Man games to pizza since every game was the same just with new toppings. I cannot stress enough how much I enjoy your storytelling in general. I still remember the comment I posted on that video even though the comments have been disabled for your videos. " That's it! I can't take it anymore! New patreon here!" Thanks for reading all of this. Jost Langen btw
