In part 1, Dean is presented with a nasty box of Husqvarna parts for a 455 Rancher chainsaw and a challenge to repair and reassemble.
Kudos to Matthew Olson videos for the inspiration.

BRRUHHHHH I literally did this entire thing a year ago, by myself, due to it not running, and I really could have used this video hahaha One year later and I’m glad I’m watching it because I’m still having issues. I replaced everything with the combustion chamber, except those rubber seals and I think that’s where my problem is. Fantastic filming, intro, narrating, and explanations to things. I know it all now, but this would have been priceless from the beginning, so I can only imagine how grateful people are for this!! Great job, much love from Virginia!

Thank you for a thorough and informative video. I wanted to see if this is something a novice (like me) can do. I’ve been working on my Husqvarna 240 chainsaw for a while now and recently found a lack of compression. I’m not sure I will be successful, but I want to learn more about small 2 cycle engines. Thank you for sharing!

Well Jack, since we have never met, you’d have to share with me your level of comfort with this type work. For me, if my chainsaw is broken anyways, my mindset is: I can’t hurt it. For me, this type of work is a challenge and fun…to see if I can actually fix it. I’m not a professional, just a shade tree mechanic who is not afraid to take things apart to see how they ‘tick’. If any of that remotely describes you, accept the challenge and watch as many videos as you can to arm yourself.

Tell the truth, I wasn't convinced my video would ever see the light of day. Given the challenge, and my abilities, or lack thereof; I figured it the saw would never run and the video would never make it to production. That said; I definitely would have planned it better. Normally, I'm rather anal when it comes to cleanliness as hopefully you can see from part 2.

Am I imagining things, or is the cage missing from the first set of bearings at 16:35? Is this not critical, to keep the balls spaced properly, and also to make sure there aren't pieces of the cage still stuck in there, to cause future damage? Great video, and clearly shows small components and critical assembly requirements, like the piston ring being oriented properly on reassembly. Just a note, you generally want to use the same oil to lubricate bearings that will be used when the equipment is running, if break-in oil isn't needed. WD-40 isn't for everything, including these bearings.

@PilotViewProductions 3 года назад
I 'did' run across this comment from a viewer...related to the 455. Maybe it's the same on the 460: " To replace the aft bar bolt you need to remove the muffler, tap the bolt out, and fish it out. To replace the forward bar bolt you need to tap it out through the bar oil reservoir tank. You will not be able to see the bolt head inside the tank. A sharp rap with a hammer will punch the bolt through the wall of the tank. You will remove the bolt and a piece of breakaway plastic. Husqvarna states to just replace the bolt. I used a dab of silicone. Make sure you square the bolt head with the recess it fits in. So far no leaks and it has been in place for about a month. It is unlikely that shops will stock the bolts"

Thanks for the compliment and taking the time to comment. Most all the parts, even the coil, I sprayed with some grease cleaner of some sort like Gunk foamy, and then got a bucket of dishwashing detergent in hot water and let the parts soak overnight. Next day I came back with more spray Junk if need-be and scrubbed with an old toothbrush and sometimes a jeweler's screwdriver set.

I have a question I hope you can answer. I have scoured the internet and even contacted Husqvarna's experts. I have a 455 rancher and one of the bar studs is stripped and will not hold torque. The response from Husqvarna is that they are punched out into the bar oil reservoir. If so, I should be able to see a bolt head or some sort, but I do not. The reservoir does not even look big enough to encompass the aft most stud. Any recommendations on how to replace or one must purchase an entire crack case over a stripped bolt?

Try your next video with No music, think about the type of people who would watch this. We want the information, not the entertainment. Music is annoying.
@PilotViewProductions
@PilotViewProductions Год назад
Appreciate the comments Aaron. I do receive comments on the underlying music on occasion but the ratio of likes versus dislikes is overwhelmingly in favor of the manner in which I shoot and edit. I try and fashion my videos as if you were watching them on tv..think HGTV or This Old House. Nobody wants to hear someone's voice droning on and on...perhaps a monotone....or, an editor's worst nightmare...dead air time. Yes, you are here to learn, but a viewers' wish to stick around and finish the video is in question as well. If a video is poorly shot: poorly edited: has poorly recorded audio: has poor lighting: is shakey...all of these contribute to folks not watching very long. Thinking of the viewer is at the very top of my list when editing. I try and shoot extremely stable videos, with good audio and excellent lighting. Usually I shoot in 4K for extra detail during closeups. And I always tell the story with the viewer in mind who may know 'nothing' about the subject matter. In fact, I edit the videos with 'no' audio or voice-over, then watch the video over and over to see if someone can perform the fix without ever hearing my vocal instructions telling them what is happening. It is only 'after' all the above is complete that I add some sort of background music to match the mood. In this age of viewership, attention span is very short. I only get a few seconds to capture someone's attention and I feel having 'any' advantage to keep them around...including background music...and keep them from getting bored, may add to a few more minutes of viewership. In the case of this video, it's fairly long and the need for excellent editing is doubly important. Not many folks want to watch a video of this length, so the subject matter, and editing has to capture the need to stick around. I consider the ability for the user not to get bored of paramount importance. Thanks again. Dean
