I bought this product myself and these are my unbiased impressions.
I go through my impressions of Briarville’s Pipe Stem Oxidation Remover. It is not a magic solution, but it does work surprisingly well and I can definitely recommend it for hobbyists as long as you are willing to do some micro mesh sanding.
Briarville’s web site: briarville.com/
I bought it from Tobaccopipes: www.tobaccopip...

It only goes to show that there is no easy solution to conquering oxidation. You know what I've been missing? Your pipe trivia quizzes with or without a give away. They are always challenging and lots of fun. But they are probably a lot of work. Cheers

I’ve used that with mixed results, but didn’t have the info to use a toothbrush *in* the solution after the soak. Thanks for that tip…I’ll be trying it on a recently arrived estate.

Thanks for your honest review of that solution. Considering I don't have any buffing wheels or micromesh...that might be a quick "solution" for me...😉🤣Have a great weekend!

I wish I had known about that product when I had my inherited briars I got when my brother in law passed. I just smoked them the way they were. I eventually gave them to my niece when she got older

That is great that your niece has them now (I assume it is a remembrance of her dad). And boy do I wish I had something like this in the past. I've probably lost about 2 weeks of my life to stem sanding;-)

Perhaps shorten the 12 hours soak. Maybe 12 hours is bit long. I still work with Oxy and after just a couple of hours it's good and i can clean it with the toothbrush and ill sand it just a littlebit and than put the Wallnut oil on the stem. Also experimenting with oil and heat. That seems to help a bit.

Love that pipe, it's definitely a holder. I first saw this solution on a video Corvette Jim made. I ordered a bottle and did the same thing as you soaked it overnight then ran it under water and it didn't work for me either so I'll give it another go with the toothbrush in the solution which by the way to me smells a lot like Listerine mouthwash. I personally don't mind a little oxidation on my stems I don't like them to get thick and almost chalky but a little under the surface doesn't bother me but there is a certain aspect of relaxation and satisfaction that I do find when using micromesh pads to clean a really bad stem. Take care and all the best.
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 3 года назад
I agree on the smell, which is a combination of wintergreen and eucalyptus. Water is one of the things needed for the stem to oxidize, that's why I try to get it covered in oil asap. Thanks for watching!

@@CaneRodPiper I didn't know water caused oxidation, I thought it was just direct sunlight that did it. That must be the reason most estate pipes I see are oxidized more directly on the button area than the rest of the stem. That's good to know thanks for the heads up.

I'm glad that you figured it out. I wasn't expecting the stem to come out shiny either, so no surprises there. The stem comes out a very similar texture to one cleaned with calcium hypochlorite - sanding is still required. Did you find that the stem was in anyway more pliable or swelled at all? Wintergreen oil contains methyl salicylate (methyl ester of salicylic acid). As you know methyl salicylate is used in the manufacture of rubber parts to keep them soft and pliable, but it tends to "dry" out of the rubber over time so that the rubber becomes hard and brittle. I am interested to see if there was any effect on the stem after you soaked it. Some of the plasticisers in stuff like brake fluid and WD-40 can make rubber parts swell up considerably and I have seen some parts get really really soft and way bigger than original. Lots of the recipes for restoring things like rubber motorcycle manifolds involve adding wintergreen oil (plus other stuff sometimes) to an alcohol carrier and soaking the part in the solution for a few hours. Since vulcanite is a rubber product, the effect should be similar. I'm still experimenting at the moment, but I have a Spartan pipe stem ready for a video when I get my concoction sorted out. Thanks for the update on your stem de-oxidiser. It makes me curious about what else is in the mixture. Hmmmm 🤔
@CaneRodPiper
@CaneRodPiper 3 года назад
So when you use hypochlorite is the stem black or gray when you remove it from the solution? I've used oxyclean or peroxide and find that it leaves a grayish layer that has to be sanded away. This stuff leaves a black surface that you could just buff and be happy with if you don't want a shiny finish. In that way I find it to be quite remarkable. The stem was not swollen or softened (thankfully) but I do think a plasticizer is at play here. My guess is that a low concentration of Methy Salicylate combined with a reasonably strong sufactant could loosen up the surface layer enough that you can just scrub away a few molecules deep. This would leave a rough surface but would not noticeably change the dimensions. A sort of chemical micro sanding. Keep me posted on your experiments and I'll do the same ;-)

@@CaneRodPiper When ever I have used Chlorine (specifically pool chlorine) to clean stems, they come out with a greyish coating I suppose, but that just washes off to leave a black stem. The stem has an etched surface where the oxidation has been removed, but you could easily buff it and carry on. I do wash the chlorine off with water/soapy water which I know is discouraged, but I find that as long as everything is dried off straight away there doesn't seem to be any extra oxidation and there's no chlorine taste either. I have found that there is an occasional stem that looks like vulcanite and is green from oxidation, but the chlorine treatment does not remove any of the green oxidation for some reason. Maybe there is some other component in that rubber that inhibits the action of the chlorine. I haven't tried any other varieties of cleaner like laundry bleach, but I suspect that it would give the same result anyway.

interesting stuff. i wonder how many stems you can do before it gets too nasty. i will have to look into the stuff. thanks

I'm guessing somewhere between 10 and 20. I should have mentioned that I cleaned the stem before doing this, so the airway was clean and I scraped the bite zone. Hopefully that will minimize the crud.

How does it compare to hydrogen peroxide or oxyclean?
@CaneRodPiper

I find that peroxide/oxyclean just raises the oxidation so you can sand it off. I think this is a much better option.
