The idea of writing prayers of thanks or adorartion to God as it relates to a particular verse when His Spirit compels you is a brilliant idea!

Hi, Pastor Matt. I love your videos! I used to take notes in my Bible until I lead a missionary team to a small rural town in Zambia. There the church as a whole only had a couple of Bibles. At the end of the visit a guy asked if he could have my Bible since he didn't have his own. Because I made valuable notes in my Bible for a few years I didn't want to give mine to him. Afterwards I felt so guilty and decided never to interact with my Bible again in such a way that I can't give it away at any moment so I stopped with note taking. This encouraged me to start again! Maybe I should just take a few more Bibles with me next time. 😊 Greetings from South Africa

You should take a second bible next time, then you can give it up freely and keep the one that means so much to you and they may not understand your note process. Just suggesting.

That’s certainly an issue with keeping your preaching and study notes in your carry Bible. I don’t think I could refuse a Bible to someone who had a genuine need and desire for one so I keep my notes in a Bible that doesn’t travel with me or in a separate notebook. When I travelled into the former Soviet Union in the early 90s we fortunately brought quite a few “spare” bibles to give away.

Thanks very much, Pastor Matt! I'm a 66-yr-old girl who aspires to spend the rest of my life becoming a deeper student, and liver-outer, of the Bible. My Bible is just like yours (ESV WM Ref Bible) but in a nice dark brown Tru-Tone cover. I use Pigma Micron .005 pens, and colors only sparingly. I find that using the black one for all my comments and margin notes "fuzzes" the point up fairly soon, so that the nib loses its needle-like crispness. I buy the black ones in a pack of 6 and change them out as soon as the fuzz develops. The colors last a long time because they are used much less than the black. Slight hand tremor creates real challenge to neat handwriting, especially small writing, so thanks for the practice tips. (May not work due to tremor, but can't lose by trying the tips!) I try to keep my notes really neat, and I use the brackets like you do instead of so much underlining. A few months ago, I implemented the "Miscellanies" system (THANKS for that wonderful video!) In green, I write "M047," for example, in the margin. Then in the verse, I underline in green *just* the topic word of the Miscellany so I don't have to write the word in the margin. (Am learning to really work at space conservation!) I use strategic but minimal symbols; tremor and zero ability in art make symbols mostly a bust for me! I make little bullet-pointed lists in the margin under a topic of an item I may use for teaching in women's Bible studies, or writing brief devotionals, etc. On the front and back blank pages, I have "temporary" notations on approx 3x5" post-its. I can "throw down" thoughts, topics and a verse or two, etc, that might be developed to go into my margins or into my Miscellanies notebook. Then the post-its move to the trash can after serving their purposes. Well, I could go on, but this is alot! My ESV WM is becoming quite a treasure box! LAST BUT NOT LEAST: NASB is my usual translation; ESV is for just this year. In January, I "pre-pre-ordered" the forthcoming Schuyler NASB Wide Margin Bible, with kind permission to take my time choosing the color. This Bible will arrive late June; I'm getting pretty excited about that. Plenty of margin space, spoiled-brat cover (goat), AND -- really important to me -- the lined paper in the back, and good maps. ***That's all! Thanks again SO much for your videos -- I watch quite a few of them. Blessings of joy and strength to you! ***

@shellieperreault6262 4 года назад
@@createsinme3672 Ha! My review is posted at Evangelical Bible (I got the slate). The one thing I would add to it, is that the concordance is entirely useless. I didn't need one to begin with- I have a phone, internet connection, and both the KJV and NASB concordances. But even though I didn't need it, what they provided was rather sad and pathetic; there are too few entries to really be able to make use of it, and you'd have to be an ant to be able to read the tiny text. Fortunately, it doesn't add much to the bulk of what is already a significantly sized Bible, but I believe a lot of people would be happier if they left the concordance out and just gave us extra lined paper to write on.

One thing that has helped the legibility of my notes is writing in all capital letters. The funny thing is I learned that from my own father as well. His college text books and journals are very legible. So, at least for me that has helped in my note taking along with symbols and abbreviated notes. I like the bracketing system you showed and will definitely implement that in my wide margin and Topaz ESV. thanks Doc, appreciate it. God bless.

I highly recommend a Journal the Word Bible, Large Print, single column, with a wide margin. The large print means less words on each page. The large print also means there is a little space between each line of text in case you want to add things like Strongs concordance number. The single column means not having to write on the inner margin unless you want to. I write with the micron colored pens which allows for tinier handwriting. I use the colors to underline and to also make notes. I like underlining because it adds to my reading. I use a ruler so it doesn't block any words or verse numbers (keeps things neat and organized). I do use a color coding system... Red for GOD, JESUS, HOLY SPIRIT; Pink for us (because we wish to be like Jesus); Orange for sin; Purple for salvation, faith, righteousness; Green for clarification/strongs/dictionary; Blue for prophecy and law; Brown for sanctuary and dating and Bible symbols; Black for chain referencing.

I like to use colors. Black for observations and exegesis and my personal observations. Blue for notes that have come from commentaries, books, quotes, and sermons. Red to write a question that needs much more future thought, research, and consultation (perhaps I don't understand it properly). A green to mark out verses which to memorize. While this seems complicated, black and blue are really the main markers I might carry with me and extensively use. God bless!

Years ago I found very thin Bible inserts like posit-notes….the same size as my Bible page on which I wrote notes….there still in my Bible of about 35 years! I go back to that Bible often because some of the things I wrote back then…like dates of important events and Bible information is there and I wouldn’t know where to go today to find that exact information! Also it helps with refreshing my memory of Bible study and God speaking to my heart!😊

My best tip is cross-referencing scripture in the margins. Comparing scripture with scripture. It will always make sense One more, I got this one from another You Tuber. I like your idea of bracketing rather than underlining. I don’t have a steady hand when I underline. One of pastors underlined in his Bible using only pencil. If you make a mistake, you can easily erase. I use colored pens (now bracketing, thanks to you). Red (stop sign color) is a good/bad example we need to follow or avoid, danger/warning sign. Orange is general information that’s important. Green is salvation, justification. Blue is baptism. Purple is for majesty of God and attributes (omniscient, never lies, fully God and man). P is for prophecy, P and cross (looks like letter t) prophecies Christ made. Star symbol is prophecies of Christ in OT and prophecies fulfilled in NT with cross reference circled. W is Word of God. Wx is weather sayings ( yes I’m a nerd that gets into that stuff with a wx station). It’s an odd system but it works for me.

I am primary an underliner and highlighter so my no margin Bibles are quite colorful. However, I have started to list, bracket, and box Scripture verses, still using color, but I have learned that by making my comments short, I have to think more about what the Scripture is saying to me. Utilizing lists have caused me to focus more on depth now. This is the first video I have watched and I plan on watching a few others so I can possibly incorporate some of your techniques with mine. I use 3 wide-margin bibles in tandem: one for quotes from theological books I'm reading, one for textual studies, and one for personal observations. I have to use a non-skid ruler when making my notes, and use all caps so that there are no descenders to worry about. I use the pigma microns for notes, and Pilot frixion pens for underscoring/bracketing. Thanks for your many helpful videos.

Hi Rob, I wrote a bunch of notes using the erasable frixion colors and placed it in my car on a hot summer day. When I came back to my notes they disappeared do to the heat. I just wanted to give you a heads up. I currently use the Bic highlighters and they are super bright, I noticed other brands the color has faded over the years. I also like the yellow sharpie color. None of those colors bleed through the Bible pages. If you want, after dragging your highlighter across a Bible verse right after you lift it off the paper you can drag your finger lightly in the direction you started from and this prevents the end from soaking too much ink.

Have you found the ERASURE WHEELS? They are updated form of old white-out. They are little tear-drop shape containers with wheels inside. They are fantastic. You can just run the white strip over your “mistakes”. I use it in all notetaking. And there’s Leafing. This is placing a sheet of paper in-between pages to take notes. You can use glue stick and adhere the page on another page edge (at inner left side of page). It’s a very cool way to have more room to take notes. It really keeps Bible neater and doesn’t really make too much volume. You can later carefully remove sheet and file somewhere else and insert new sheet for new notes. You mentioned taking a Bible apart and make a notebook, but leafing would be better I think. On that note, you can purchase a loose-leaf Bible. Thanks for your videos. Really learn a lot from you. Hey Pastor Matt, thank you so much for such a great vid. I am on a tight budget, so I don't have a wide margin. Instead I have a Humble Lamb. It was a squeeze on my budget, but it is a high quality Bible and will last me for the rest of my life quite probably. Anyway, in lieu of margins, I found out how to insert printer paper as extra pages for taking notes. So, I have the perfect Bible. Even though I do not take margin notes, you have great advice, bracketing instead of underlining and using symbols. The symbols are especially useful. I use one color, red, as it matches the red undergilding. One thing I like to do everytime I underline scripture is choose one line or thought that stands out to me and I copy that at the top of the page it appears. Thank you so much for your vid. Always enjoy them.

My tip for a major improvement to your handwriting...use an ALL caps print style. Seriously, it works! I use 3 distinct styles of writing 1. Full cursive, 2. All caps print, and 3. A hybrid cursive/print (kind of like yours). In older Bibles, I used #3 mostly and it was quite messy with some notes illegible. A member of my "Markings of the Bibles We Treasure" fb group suggested I try the All Caps style...and while I had to really commit to using it all the time for a while so it would become 2nd nature, it really has cleaned up my notes considerably. Oh, and btw, I think your "wrecked" page is what I call "eye candy." ;) Thanks for the helpful tips all around.

I don't really take notes with it, but I mark it with a yellow Bible highlighting pen and bracket important sentences and paragraphs with a regular pen. I read another Bible several years ago, an NIV. Now I'm on my second reading with the NKJV. The other day, I bought an ESV which I will read pretty soon. Thanks Matthew. Good stuff. Less is definitely more in terms of making significant marks in a wide margin Bible. I will be adding bracketing and lists to my arsenal. I don't care for highliters anymore either-at least not for Bible marking. I did develop a color key specific to my studies, implemented through the use of archival quality colored pencils; which enable me to either mark an isolated verse or just the verse numbers to a passage of scripture. In either case the marks are subtle yet noticeable. In addition to being left handed, my penmanship is horrible-like an angry cartoonist who's about to pass away. Thanks again.

@@andyheller2691 It's much more restful for reading, isn't it. Someone recently gave me an ESV Legacy Bible (TruTone cover) with a broken spine and front cover pulling away from the block. Too bad! Injuries aside, this Legacy Bible has a large'ish font, decent paper, no cross references, and wide margins (wider on the outside margins.) It is the most restful Bible I have ever read; it invites one to just read it devotionally for reading slowly/contemplatively. i read it with pens and notebooks far away, so that I'm just "listening, pondering and praying." I "forbid" myself to write in it; any Bible I've written in, I feel sucked into note-taking, "working in my Bible," etc. I know sometimes I need to pick up a Bible that I've not written in, and just listen, enter into God's rest, allow Him to lead me, and commune with Him as prayer. Enjoy your wide margin Bible! Blessings!

I've used colors just to separate notes that are near each other, otherwise I find it can be difficult to tell where a note begins and ends. Typically will match it with the colored underline. I don't use black too much, as I find the blue pigma bleeds through less. I really need to define a system for myself though.

My use of wide margin Bibles goes back nearly 50 years. My carry Bible is my NKJV wide margin. But I don't do notes anymore. My eyes and my hands are 69 years old. 😏 And it takes both working reasonably well to write legible notes in Bible margins *and* be able to read them. At this point, I'm having difficulty even reading the text of my Bible, never mind the footnotes/center column references. I might have to get a large or giant print edition, but I am loathe to do that, for two reasons. (1) I would have to retire the Bible that I've used for nearly 30 years. (2) Bibles today are typically printed in China, and I want to boycott China as much as possible. If I do get a large/giant print NKJV, I will probably try to use a modified form of symbols in the margins. That's a good tip, a technique I haven't thought of in a long time. Also liked the tip about bracketing vs. underlining. Thanks.

Not sure how far this will go in an area like a bible margin where conserving space is a big goal, but for general use, re: handwriting -- I have noticed that the size of the nib makes a difference. If your writing (like mine) looks 'spiky', like "chicken scratch", etc, then a wider nib will turn it into beautiful flowing cursive. If your writing looks 'sloppy', more of a "scrawl", etc, then a smaller nib will give it more definition and turn it into... beautiful flowing cursive, lol. Also, half the time, the problem is actually the lined paper. Trying to make it small enough to fit between the lines (or in the margin of the bible...) can leave it looking weird when it might flow much more naturally if you let your writing overall just get a little bit bigger. Using plain paper when you can will get rid of that hurdle.

When I write Hebrew in my Bible, I write in modern Hebrew cursive. When you’re writing small, it is too easy to confuse ב with נ or כ or to mix up ר, ד, ך, and ן if you’re writing in block characters.

Pastor, I have always struggled with my poor handwriting.. I remember having spelling words that were correct, being marked as wrong, only because my handwriting was so bad... I have always written in my Bibles...as well as my expensive Daily Roman Missal, but have never really had a system... Although for several, years, I dud use a different color of ink each year... I. Just bought my first ESV ...and find that after watching various Bible journalists...yes, Jason isvery different from you...and everybody else..🥺...I am a little self conscious about marking in my beautiful turquoise Bible . I have also ordered a new (purple) NKJV....which is my favorite translation. I love PapermatevInkjoy pens, but am considering trying the Pigma pens. Anyway... I am sitting here, with my pink and purple Inkjoy pens... hesitating to do what has come naturally ...for years... HELP! I have NEVER hesitated to write and mark up any book ....before. I have always read non-fiction with a pen in my hand. Thanks for your tips... I tend to underline, then write something in thr margin....I might bracket a whole paragraph... That’s as complicated as I generally get... However, I want to do more, and am planning to buy a large print journaling Bible... I have severe glaucoma, so I have to be careful about print size.. I enjoy your videos... My mom was a church (Presbyterian) for many years, and my family attended that church for about thirteen years... I am now 77...and have been a Catholic since the early 80’s... I have an MAR from the Athenaeum of Ohio..,in Cincinnati.... and am a certified Lay Pastoral Minister. But.. I am fairly ecumenical....and am comfortable in most churches....was brought up Methodist, with a dash of Southern Baptist... Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us...

Well, if you still hesitate just keep in mind that none of our notes are perfect, and that looking back you’ll be grateful to have tried, failed, and learned than to never have tried at all. I sometimes suffer from a sense of perfectionism where I worry about not having a perfect system for my notes, and so it prevents me from studying because I’m afraid I’ll mess up my notes. But then I realize that I’ll never be perfect and that it’s better to learn and take home the lessons with me than to worry about the perfect format for my notes. Even the best Bible commentary is a WIP, no man’s notes are final. Hope this helps you to write again and get closer to God!

Thanks for the tips. I got my first wide margin (well, technically a Journal Bible) recently and I've been wondering how I can improve/unify/refine my note taking. I wonder if exploration is an important part as we find a system that works for us? Thanks once again.

Love your thoughts on this. You Presbyterian you! LOL I need your help - I can't pay too much for the bibles but i am saving because this is my life calling as well. Q: I am finding that the wide margin bibles are sometimes shorter than the regular-big bibles and so the lines are smaller. I have purchased two and sent them back. I want to find the right one but often times the size of the bible is an issue. I have a small one for preaching and I use some of your symbols and some of my own. However, I want a big bible with journaling lines that I can write in and enjoy.

I am surprised that you get long life from your microns. I have about given up on them. The nib wears down very quickly for me and I do not bear down much. At first, I thought I had purchased some Chinese knockoffs but all the ones I purchased from any location wore quickly. May just use gel ball points from now on.

I had this issue too. I found that the 0.5 wore out very quickly but the 01 has lasted a long time. If you write with pressure maybe try the next nib size up and see if that helps. They are great pens.

I really like the Crossway heirloom margin consistency with margin size. However it is no longer is available. I checked out cambridge and I really don't like the middle margin smaller then the outside margins. Is there another wide margin that you would recommend? I am a pastor and really want an heirloom quality, so I am at a loss as what to choose

The statement you made at 3.08 sounds really strange. It would seem to indicate that if you give a Bible to an unbeliever or an unbeliever reads it that it would be dangerous and would cause the person reading it to have their heart hardened because they don't have the spirit of God in them. I cannot believe that you would believe that!?!? I have probably completely misinterpreted what you mean. Kind regards, Phillip

I think he meant that as a believer that reads without relying on the supernatural power of the spirit our time in the word is fruitless. We should prayerfully read and ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate scripture.
