"Why can't we all just get a lawn?" Check out a real life example of this concept at Custer Village, Fort Benning, GA. Houses are much closer to the road than the average suburban neighborhood creating a shorter front yard. But a park for nearly every block is received in that trade off. Back yards are still there (usually for dogs, backyard BBQs, trampolines, etc.), but from living there, I come to agree with your sentiment. Large front yards are kind of a waste.

Like I said, we’ll throw the football around twice a year but spend thousands maintaining it. #yardsharing
@CGrahamWorks

So I live in rural north but we do not really have a front yard or back yard. The whole property is fenced with a litte area for parking. The house is central to the fenced area making more play and Work area for kids and pets
@Schindlabua
@Schindlabua 2 года назад
The concept of the american front lawn has always eluded me. As if it's the only way to live. Also it's so exposed, so are you really going to play/bbq on it a lot? Maybe that's a me issue. Many american suburbs look really sterile and there are no signs of life, especially the upper middle class ones--living there would make me depressed. Ironically I prefer the more raunchy looking suburbs, those at least have character. Smith Ave, Douglas, Georgia looks really fun and you could probably even run your daily errands on a bicycle. The good suburbs are few and far between though. The USA really needs to relax those building codes and parking requirements and allow for more mixed-use zoning, so more places can look like Gardiner, Montana. You guys had really nice towns but at some point you went crazy. Growing up in a rural area, we found plenty of places to play around at, like meadows and forests, even without having a lawn. We had this small inner yard type thing which is a great place to have a bottle of wine with your neighbors. If I had to choose between Seibersdorf, Austria, and Elk Creek, Kentucky, the choice would be pretty easy. (Though neither are my favourite.)
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 2 года назад
What exactly do you mean by “as if its the only way to live”? I also grew up rural. I’m glad I did.
@Schindlabua
@Schindlabua 2 года назад
@@YUMBL I meant, since it's the only available option. It's even required by law to have X meters of setback from the road in R1 residential zones, so it's almost like the front lawn is considered a basic human right in the US! I'm sure setback requirements serve some sort of purpose but what you guys are doing is excessive. You could just let the market figure out how people want to live, and I'm sure mixed-use with higher density would be the result.

YES finally someone gave this pack the recognition it deserves. I honestly miss this from allot of assets and colossal needs to figure out to make this a more standard. Doesn't need to be as modular as this is but it makes no sense to have a 100 floor skyscraper that is just commercial.

Also, offices are often part of mix-used buildings too. In the city I live there are a couple of different blocks that work like this: underground parking, a sort of indoor mall with a big grocery store on the street level, also a hotel and shops on the outside lining the streets, some offices on top of that, then further up there are apartments with a sort of communal garden in the middle (basically a garden on the roof of the mall surrounded by apartment complexes) and most of it is just older wall-to-wall buildings stitched together in this configuration.

The other thing about a lot of European cities, even the ones that have a whole lot of expansion after cars were invented, is that they began life as multiple small towns and villages short distances apart and the space filled in between them. That makes urban planning an absolute fucking nightmare because you have to build around land that's already owned and used for things.
@Gadottinho

That still happens in places like south America.

Even now European cities (or at least Dutch) are build to be walkable. Since it removes the necessity for cars, which in turn will make the roads less occupied and lowers the cost of them which also means the roads which we do have are higher quality.

It's really nice to see some more mixed use zoning in Cities skylines playthroughs. It's one of the features I really miss from the core game. It just opens up for some really neat city and neighborhood planning. One thing you see often here is that each of these neighborhoods have also some local services, primarily child care/preschool; care facilities for the elderly; and primary education 1-6 and maybe 7-9.

I started by building Towns here and there. making them self sufficient and not too big before moving to my next town. Seems to be working quite well. I also used to put all my garbage on each end of the city. Now i hide it in the middle of each industrial zone. No more garbage truck pile ups. 20:34 - I could totally see buildings like that being in the older parts of Downtown Vancouver. Being from Vancouver (I live in the suburbs), I see classic buildings kind of like that especially around the Gastown area. A lot of older buildings that have been renovated and restored to their former glory. EDIT: and the rest of the area you're showing has that trendy feel of mixed use commercial-residential of the West End of Vancouver's Downtown core. Add in some mixed use Commercial-Office for the Howe and Burrard Street areas (eg the Bentell towers) and you'd have all the designs of Vancouver, from the mixed uses of the downtown core and transitional areas around it to the sprawling suburbs beyond. Only thing missing would be that big Stanley Park stand in and harbor fronts.

So in this interesting modern area I was thinking, the train/subway tracks you've got around it, is begging for an interesting train/metro station to be built there. Also I'd like to suggest you take a look at the Gelderse Dreef in Lelystad, though it might be hard to see on maps, there are two sets of tunnel-bridge hybrid underpasses for cyclists and pedestrians to move from the two districts. Something like that might be wonderful in connecting your various districts also. Lelystad and Almere both btw are interesting modern European cities which are still very much pedestrian and cyclist friendly, but are also good examples of European car based suburbia. These two cities might give some useful inspiration for the various cities you're building, for I would think it would fit both in US and in EU based cities you might be working on.

1:20 If you make that green space in to a park district and keep it very basic; Main entrance, five side entrances and just a few activities it will make the surrounding land value skyrocket. I highly recommend making any green space in to a park district. I've recently started doing this myself instead of simply plopping a vanilla square park down and my cities look ten times better for it. One thing I think this game desperately needs are mixed zone buildings. Where I live there are a lot of small corner shops and offices that have one or two apartments above them. It could easily be put in to the game, after reaching a milestone you can place a commercial [and later office] building that has apartments above. It works for both low density and high density, where high density will have one big commercial building on the bottom and ten apartments above. IMO it's a huge oversight that needs adding.

I love the plaza/green space you built in the middle. I do love mixed-use in the real world. And very much prefer it. However, I kind of like to build realistic american style cities with sprawl and then upgrade them to more urbanized cities for the challenge of managing traffic and stuff.

He Yumble, Your style of building is nice and realistic. One thing I am critical about is the amount of roads used. Road need to serve a purpose. if its there just to lay a road without a clear use in mind its a wast of space. Some roads (like on 7:19) are pretty useless because another road already serves the buidling or parking lot. you could really save space when considering if a road is really of use. That space can then be used for more trees or walking/ biking paths. you could also make it a dead end with parking for the building nearby. I think it will make the roadplacement more realistic that way. Keep up the good work

If I had a demand for CSII, mixed use zones would be appreciated 😭 I play on console (until I get a PC) and kind of figured out ways to mix zoning together in small patches to get a similar feel. My next demand would be fixing how OP noise pollution is

Hey Yumbl, I like mixed use zoning! I get a bit annoyed when I see sprawling suburban areas, with grids grids and more grids... Having services, commercial, residential, all mixed together is my kind of city. I don't even need a car everything is close. Great public transportation and bicycle lanes, plus a bunch of parks and cultural events. But yeah, I live in France. Also, there is a big trend to get cars out of cities. So yeah, nice to see this type of city in CS. Thanks!

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but I thing I think is missing is pedestrian bridge over the big arterial road in between those two mixed areas to connect them. so people don't have to use crosswalks over the arterial.

One big difference between the States and the Netherlands (and other European countries) is the zoning restrictions on supermarkets forcing them to mall areas. Here we have one on almost every street corner, or at least several in walking distance wherever you are. A law to protect homes from factories being build next door somehow also applied to all commercial businesses. Canada has a similar thing iirc. The only exceptions in North America are over a century old and predate these laws. Such a shame, mixed zoning is so much better!

I really like mixed use developments, but also mixed density (sort of), where there's like tiny pockets of low density detached housing and shops, and small medium density low-rises and townhouses, both snuck in alongside high density towers for the high density I mostly prefer the big apartment tower complexes with the parks and shared spaces, community facilities, etc. and the massive shared underground parking serving half a dozen or more apartment towers, and sometimes some nice commercial forming the lower levels or even creating the base that the park/shared space sits on top of similar thing for the medium density, I like to just keep it together as blocks, with some shared facilities for the low density it's the classic small blocks and/or culdesacs, thin roads (typically without footpaths or markings) with tons of permeability for pedestrians (using lots of extra walkways that cut through the places cars can't drive), but all isolated into an area by strict access control on the roads so there's only like one or two exits/entrances by road to the area, basically the whole area fits into one larger city block taking up about as much space as a large apartment complex or townhouse development or whatever each block kind of becomes like a bit of a gated community, semi-self sufficient with it's own shared parks, etc. and maybe some of it's own commercial real estate for restaurants and convenience stores and so on I think it's a bit different to the mixed use developments in Europe and the US, Canada, etc. which tend to follow the old classic pre-automobile model, and also tend to separate different densities and push the low density out to the suburbs while squeezing all the high density into the central city (or just don't have any skyscrapers at all in the case of most of Europe) I especially like to look at cities/neighborhoods in South Korea for inspiration, places like Dongtan, Songdo, Cheongna, Gimpo, Suwon, etc. all the 'new town' (신도시) urban redevelopment projects, and also sometimes at Japan, they give nice examples for how to make areas walk-able without having to give up being drive-able, and also show that detached housing and skyscrapers can actually happily co-exist alongside each other, and don't need to be separated by many kilometers of medium density to keep them apart xD but also they're just really pretty oh, and it's also really fun to do in cities skylines because you get to build way more big roads and highway interchanges and tunnels and bridges and such than you would have in a typical European/American style city while also getting to spend lots of time decorating big parks and plazas

Mixed-use zoning over anything honestly, as somebody who grew up in a big Dutch city where there's mixed-use zoning everywhere, I just can't understand why the US does things the way they do. Heck ever since I started building Japanese cities in this game I realized that in Japan the mixed-use zoning is on a totally different level haha, Tokyo is literally mixed-use zoning everywhere!

The architecture will be all over the place (lots of assets) but the layout will be based on older cities with train connectivity. A dutch level of bikeability, but with no canals. I’m looking at german and swiss cities quite a bit.
@ARTFXGaming
@ARTFXGaming 3 года назад
@@YUMBL Well you could also keep this in mind, I live in the Dutch city of Rotterdam which actually is one of the cities where a lot of the narrow canals have been removed over time, many of the current streets follow the path of where these canals used to flow and are now often named after these former canals. You see this a lot within the city center and was often done to be able to have wider streets in the denser areas of the city.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 3 года назад
One of my goals is to reduce the width of my streets. My last city had too strong of a network honestly. I want to he comfortable working in narrow spaces, and dealing with areas designed before cars. Any specific cities I should look at?

To be fair, noise pollution is indeed one of the biggest problems of mixed use districts. Here in Berlin much of the city is mixed use and there's a well known phenomenon of districts becoming popular because of cafés, bars and cultural centres, then wealthy hipsters moving in because it's popular, then them complaining about noise until the businesses have to close or restrict their visitors so much that the district just dies out again.

Two questions:. 1. How do mixed use assets interact with CS zoning and zoning demands? B) Have you seen / implemented the "superblock" concept as demonstrated in Barcelona? They are specifically designed to allow vehicle access but disallow vehicle through-flow. 3. I really enjoy your backstories to the buildings you select. 4. There is NO fourth thing. 5. If not a busline, a really nice rug.
@YUMBL
@YUMBL 2 года назад
The assets arent zonable, they must be plopped but they work as residential and commercial just like zoned buildings. I’ve never made superblocks per se, but I’m a big proponent of following “road hierarchy” which superblocks do.

The car parks at the edges five the build a somewhat "40s modernist utopia" feel to it. Or, for a more negative outlook, like those outdoor malls that are a failed attempt to build an artificial high street in car-centric suburbia. Those mixed use buildings are also great centre pieces for an area otherwise made fully of growables, especially using the shorter ones on real suburbs (not North America's car mazes). Also, maybe there's something wrong with my game, but I've never seen the residential half of those buildings complain about the noise. In my experience, if the streets are quiet enough, the noise from even high-density commercial isn't enough to cause residential buildings any problem.

I've just visited New England and went to Bar Harbor, Salem, and NYC. A lot of street dining popping up. Literally taking roadside parking spots and building little platforms for tables and chairs. It's cute as hell man I am gunna add that to an area like this. it'd be beautiful and there are some assets on the workshop that are 1x1 or 1x2 sidewalk cafes. Here, in Europe, we also had a romance with single-use districts. They seemed modern and good, though at some point many have noticed that this is a thing that kills cities. Office district is crawded for eight hours a day, while on weekend looks like a deserted wild west town. And to use those districts citizens need to constantly move around the city. Since some districts attract huge part of workforce in the city it also means that really huge groups of people will try to get there five days a week in certain hours, which is always a problem for public transport or personal transport. Spreading destinations is always better. Shame that huge part of this city is based on mods. Overall good work, though I like using mostly vanilla + DLC, also because my pc started protesting while ago, when I took too many mods ;-P
