Former farrier to the Queen and Paul Schockemoehle demonstrates Shoeing the dressage horse with advanced shoeing for improved horse movement. This horseshoeing system works very well for the sports horse on a soft surfaced arena.
The outside branch of the horseshoe has been spread wider, the toe of the shoe has been set-up at an angle. The reason for the angle, to create extended dorsal-lateral pivot point. This keeps the limb maintain straightness.
How to improve your dressage score should begin by looking at the whole horse. The horse needs to be balanced for a start and that includes a horse that has horseshoes for dressage. All sports require different shoes and that is the same with dressage horses. The riders position and the dressage horses movement is fine tuned for perfection and biomechanics.

From what I saw, I think you fullered the lateral branch to make it wider for more lateral support and rolled the toe and the area slightly to the inside of the toe. I guess the heel extension on the lateral side is also to float that area in the soft surface? Is this to address a horse that tends to twist and toe in as it walks (either conformation or that hock being a bit more unstable) or something else?

Cindy Q you are absolutely correct but the toe has been set instead of rolled. I'm very impressed with your understanding :)

JamesHines Farrier thank you so much James your vids and posts really help in understanding. I have 1 or 2 horses with slight hock issue like that so I've been trying to learn more about what we can do a preventive and protective way instead of waiting for a bigger issue to show up. Does set the toe mean that you shaped the actual toe so it curved up (rather than just rolling the edge) and what advantage does that have over rolling. My guess is you could also achieve a bigger curve like a bit more aggressive than a roll...

I love the way you make the support much easier then the way I was trained. Great work. I have been a farrier for over 20 years and still learn new ways of doing stuff.

Hey there , I’m a farrier as well and now that i watched this video , I have a horse that not only twists its hocks as he walks but also is having a hard time doing its lead changes specially on its right hind which has pretty bad shivers. I wonder if a shoe like that fullered on the outside branch would give him more stability and be able to push off more his hind end . I would really appreciate your opinion

Is that a Bruce Wilcocks turning hammer or a cocking forge?

What type of correctional shoeing would you use to help a horse that is cow hocked?

What are you rubbing on the nail heads after you file?

Putty, it prevents dirt from entering the holes.

What was the putty you put in the old nail holes?
@jameshinesfarrier709

FreedomtToReason The putty is just to close the holes up and minimize any dirt from getting in. I purchase it from the farrier store. Some people use a self-mix of window fitting putty and coloring. I like the stuff, especially in black.
