Improve your Vocabulary: Stop saying I KNOW!

This lesson is about more than just improving your vocabulary. Improve your communication skills and your conversations with others by replacing the simple “I know.” with other terms and expressions in English. In this video, I’ll explain why “I know” often has a negative effect on your conversation, and will then give you many different terms you can use instead. Take the first step to improving your relationships with friends, family, and co-workers by watching this class and then actually doing what I say in the video. Practice in real life and then let me know how it went in the comments.

"I know" versus "I understand" is the difference between arrogance and understanding. Even if you know what someone is telling you, that person wants to be heard. If that person feels heard, they are more agreeable and so are you.

It's funny this video came on my timeline right after I had a conversation with a women who I first tried to end the conversation with nicely by saying thank I understand and now im overwhelmed we can dive into this another time but she kept going so I threw in the I knows and eventually when that didn't work I completely zoned out and turned my back on her. In my own life I have used I know ONLY with people who I have tried to listen and understand and then put my input but that other person was not open to what I had to say and just wanted to hear themselves talk and talk over me. I can't have have conversation with someone who can't let someone input something into the convo because if that is the case then go to a therapist who will listen to you rant but want no input. I agree that I know is very condescending but sometimes when all other nice tactics to end a conversation fails I know can really throw a punch in there

Thank you! My work colleague says "I know" when information is being shared with her. It comes across as being rude, ignoring people, & unappreciative. Causes communication breakdown. Perhaps we'll just leave her "Post-it" notes. The only time she wants to communicate is when she wants to interrupt the way you are doing a task. She ignores that everyone has a way of doing simple tasks. Her way does not improve the process or make it faster. The end result will be the same. I simply say "I understand" instead of arguing. At the end of the day I am not going to lose sleep over her saying "I know". The team sees this which makes the rest of us look like better employees. As an adult it is her responsibility to improve her communication skills.

Over my years of learning Polish I've unfortunately caught one of their most commonly used phrases, "no wiem", which made me start saying it in all of languages that I can speak. I greatly appreciate that I found your video because I really hate the phrase, "I know", so I'm reteaching myself to avoid using this. Like you said, It makes me feel like people are not actually considering my message and they only care about what they want to tell me, so conversations feel one-sided.

@Stephone Bryan lol I hear you . Although my comment was more about when in back and forth conversation. Saying “I know” is kind of abrasive and basically cuts the conversation short . It also makes an assumption that I think you dont know lol I’m just engaging in dialogue but yes when people give unwanted opinions or try to act like a know it all . I know is a quick and easy way to shut that down .
@user-tn6fg2du6v
@user-tn6fg2du6v 3 года назад
@Stephone Bryan fair enough but this isn’t about having a long conversation per se , more so about a fruitful conversation, I can only be talked at for so long . I will eventually give my input . If you respond to my input with I know , if you know why exactly are you speaking to me , go talk to yourself , review things in your head . Only therapists have to sit and be talked at for long periods of time without input , you don’t engage others in conversation and then respond to their input with “I know” . That’s not very self aware . Also shows you have crappy conversational skills , me telling you something you know doesn’t always warrant the response “I know” and if you would like to disengage from the conversation do so but don’t be surprised if someone you constantly say “I know” to starts to avoid conversation with you . If you enjoy conversation with someone saying “I know” is a good way to make sure they don’t enjoy conversation with you .

When I was 18 years old, as a private in the United States Army, I listened to a speech given by my Brigade Commander. I was moved by that speech but found myself perplexed that I didn't completely understand some of the words he had used in the speech.... After the speech, I ran into him and exchanged a few brief words.... Again, He used a couple words that I didn't know... I felt dumb. I nodded and smiled while my face grew red with embarrassment but I wouldn't dare to ask him what his words meant. However, I think he recognized my confusion. That night, I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a dictionary. I looked up each word so that I could understand what his message was, in it's entirety. That was the first domino in a series that would take me from challenging myself with a vocabulary list weekly, in which, I would challenge myself to use the words I would learn in a sentence to doing Public Speaking in various capacities throughout my career. Broadening my vocabulary has contributed so significantly to my self confidence. 🔥 I love what you're doing here!

I've found that when someone constantly says "I know" when you're speaking to them, it's often a defense response. They feel you're treating them as if they were ignorant, and they feel the need to show that they already know the information. It's rooted in their ego, and they aren't recognizing that this person has no idea of what knowledge they may have. So instead of either just listening and saying thank you, or replying with a different, less defensive phrase, they strike back and shut the other person down.

We cannot assume innocence in whoever is receiving the “I know.” Sometimes people genuinely bring ignorance and bias into their interactions and insult others with disclosures of very rudimentary concepts. I.e. the white guy in the room who constantly assumes minorities need them to explain things. Reminds me of the time I did jury duty and the one blonde haired, blue eyed male in the room felt the need to repeat the concept of whether something was proven beyond the shadow of a doubt while everyone was merely thinking through the case. The judge shoved the concept down our throats beforehand and everyone was clear but he designated himself the one to keep explaining this and that in spite of anyone giving him any proof it wasn’t understood. The frequent “I knows” he received was him being spared the verbiage he genuinely deserved in that situation.

ANYTIME I have ever heard an individual say "I know" after hearing an explanation or data this has been the case. You often see this in the medical field with patients (who have done their own research and "THEY KNOW!") As soon as I see this response I immediately see they are often extremely ignorant on the topic. This is something that medical providers can very much relate to. -Dr. Ryan

Couldn't have said that any better. You're absolutely correct! At my job, had to instruct someone on the proper way to use some heavy duty machinery, for day in day out usage. Young man thought he knew everything... and knew absolutely nothing ! During course of the day, I'd point out his weak points and what he was doing wrong. I'd always hear, "I know, I know!" and he'd go back to doing "wrong" again. Finally, I said to him... "listen... we're all grown. We don't like being told what to do. But the fact of the matter is, if you knew what you were doing they wouldn't have placed you with me. So just listen." He'd listen for all of 4 minutes, and wound up doing wrong in the process. Goofing up again....

Even though I want people to understand me, because of my short vocabulary I’ve actually started not understanding myself if you know what I mean. Sometimes I have problems believing myself because I’ve had to change me for other people. This definitely made me more confident and determined to increase my vocabulary!
