In this grammar lesson, I will teach you how to reduce adverb clauses and write better English sentences. This is important because it adds more variety to your writing, makes your English sound more native, and helps you understand when people use reduced clauses.
PRACTICE WITH ME: ✍️
Can you reduce the adverb clause in these sentences? If so, write these sentences again with a reduced clause. Put your answers in the comments below, and I will give you feedback!
1. When you take this medicine, you should avoid alcohol.
2. After the doctor examines you, she will prescribe medications.
3. Before the doctor exits the exam room, you can ask questions.
4. Because the medicines are expensive, many people cannot afford them.
5. Since Europeans have comprehensive health insurance, they get many medications for free.

It wouldn't have cost so much. Is this sentence correct? I wanted to say for example, a corn that is 4 times more expensive than the ordinary ones. When a friend asked: Is it sweet? I answer: Oh yes. Otherwise it wouldn't have cost so much

Hi, Jenna! Happy Thursday! How's it shaking? Today's a national holiday and I couldn't be happier to take the day off to have so me time and watch your video as well 😃 Thanks so much for teaching us how to grammatically shorten sentences. Quick question. Would it be possible to explain to me which form is correct in the phrases "in the system" and "on the system?" I can never tell when to use the preposition "in" or "on" and your kind explanation would be greatly appreciated. As always, thanks so much for your time and attention. Take care!

Hi Rodrigo! Everyone loves a holiday :) I hear it's the day to commemorate Tiradentes. I went to that town a few years ago. So nice. Anyway, it should be "in the system." Good question! Prepositions are never-ending torture, lol.

@@LearnAcademicEnglish Hi again, Jenna! Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly on the previous question. I very much appreciated your teaching me the correct preposition in the sentence example set out earlier. You're well versed with Brazilian holidays, and you're absolutely correct. Can you believe that I have never been to Tiradentes? It's so nice that you have already been there and found it very nice. Which makes me think that we have so many sightseeing places across the nation where we live and, yet, we've visited just a few places. Anyway, don't let me keep you. Hope your classes are going well and that you're not swamped with school papers and tests to grade and classes to prepare. To be a teacher seems to me quite a challenge, and a great deal of responsibility comes with the territory, as a result. Keep up the good work. And, as always, please stay safe and stay well. Have a good one! :)

That is so true--we often don't explore our own backyards. To be honest, I don't have much interest in traveling in most of the U.S. (although I love to travel in my home state of California). I took a trip to Minas with my in-laws about 6 years ago. We went to Ouro Preto, Tiradentes, Inhotim, and Congonhas. Ouro Preto is so beautiful!

@@LearnAcademicEnglish Hi, Jenna and Happy Fri(yay)! Ah, my favorite day of the week hands down! Isn’t it wonderful that the weekend is just around the corner? In a nutshell, can't even wait to quitting time so that I can start to unwind for the upcoming weekend. Your trip to Minas Gerais along with your in-laws six years ago sounds incredible. The local architecture of the churches and the souvenier stores must be a must-see. As for getting to visit other cities in our backyard, I wholeheartedly agree with you. We don’t often do this and, honestly, I'm fine with the places I've been to (or lack thereof) so far. But it’s always nice to learn the perspective of a trip through the lens of a person and, for that matter, can't thank you enough for kindly sharing it with me. Okay, time to put the nose back to the grinder. I hope you have a lovely day and a wonderful and restful weekend! Take care and stay safe!

Hi ma'am, I understand the topic after coming across your video, and I must say the lesson has been coherently articulated. Thank you for that! tho I have a doubt that is can't we reduce the adverb clause of manner, condition, and even concession, can we?

Hi professor, How can we distinguish between "Since" in an adverb clause of time and an adverb clause of reason?
@LearnAcademicEnglish
@LearnAcademicEnglish 3 месяца назад
Good question! Usually the context (the meaning of the sentence or the sentences around it) will be enough to tell you.

When you reduced that sentense the comma can we reserve or emitted?
@LearnAcademicEnglish
@LearnAcademicEnglish 18 дней назад
In American English, we usually use that comma, and in school we learn that the comma is required. However, it is possible to see it omitted sometimes.

Since has 2 meanings. It can refer to time (I have lived here since I was a child) or it can mean "because" as in "I am learning Italian since I am going to travel there next year.) I don't have any videos about reducing noun and adjective clauses. You can see all my grammar videos here: ru-vid.com/group/PLTaPDxv5nudnbMc7WK5e6Hz1EQrz49Yvd

We don't use that term to refer to this type of structure, but it's possible that some teachers do. Sometimes different terms are used depending on various factors, like what country you're in.

Excellent work reducing the clauses!!
@naseermak4357

When we reduce them , we remove the finite verb. Why do we still call them clauses when they don't have any finite verbs.
@LearnAcademicEnglish
@LearnAcademicEnglish 6 месяцев назад
We can call them clauses because of the word "reduced." After we reduce them, they are adverb phrases, but when we use the word "reduced" to describe it, we know that a change was made, and it is in the reduced form.

@@LearnAcademicEnglish suppose I am asked how many clauses are there in this sentence: 'Coming home, she saw a tiger.' Should my answer be 1 clauses or two clauses?
@LearnAcademicEnglish
@LearnAcademicEnglish 6 месяцев назад
Good question. In that case, we would say that there is one clause, but people who understand grammar well would recognize that there were originally two clauses but the first one was reduced and become an adverb phrase.
