Accuracy in finding faults using an OTDR is critical for installation verification and troubleshooting fiber optic networks. There are many factors that can affect the results of an OTDR test. In this session, we will discuss the main variations in fiber optic cable structures that affect accuracy and also the differences between fiber types and manufacturing processes that can contribute to differing OTDR results. We will also cover physical issues such as slack cable and aerial sag. The goal is to establish a method in which accurate Index of Refraction (I.O.R.) values are determined and applied for maintenance and repair roles, as well as provide an understanding that fiber length and cable length are not the same thing. This is key when trying to locate that fault/break in the field.
