Paul cannot praise what you do and how you do it highly enough, absolute ⭐. Always balanced, fair, detailed, factual. Shows there is a future in the bike industry for those with skill and application. Somewhat ironic that the opportunity nowadays so often lies, in part, turning manufacturers ‘flagship’ offerings into items fit for purpose. Your patience and focus are exemplary. Good stuff 👍

I'm really impressed by your commitment to build quality, if I didn't do my own builds, I'd fly across the pond for my next bike. As for the integrated Quark power meters, from my own experience I've only had Shimano chainrings wear enough that I needed to replace them. All of my SRAM rings are still cranking, with regular chain replacements. For road use, I don't see the integration being an issue, but for CX, Gravel or MTB, I've had enough ring strikes going over logs and granite that I want my rings as cheap to replace as possible.

Amazing, a humble little bike shop that should be the envy of all. Your clientele are so lucky. After years of abusing my body ski racing, marathon running, even in the late 80's I bought a LeMond bike and moved to France to play on the bike. My knees finally fell apart. I am rehabbing a total knee replacement as we speak, and planning on hitting the mountain (40 minutes away here in Oregon) and doing a fair bit of road cycling (easier on my remaining non bionic knee) next fall. Your videos and your obvious attention to detail (along with a dose of the infamous 5 year old) have and are encouraging me to build my own bike (Look 765 optimum). A few years ago I transformed a old Raleigh Technium (repainted and all) into a single speed for college daughter. I wish I was in your neighborhood. Thanks heaps for the inspiration. That right there is why I build my own bikes up from frames and do all my own mechanics and wheel builds. My costs are just tools, my time is free so I can take the time to do it right.

I have a Specialised Tarmac SLR4 (with Shimano Ultegra which is not a great fit as it used PF press fit Adaptors that seemed to constantly squeak after 3-4 months use - so needed to be replaced often - to fit a Shimano 6750 Compact Ultegra crank to a OSBB Tarmac SL4 frameset we used a WMPF30OUT1 Wheels-Manufacturing PF30 To Outboard ABEC-3 Bearings 24mm - similar to the one-piece BB unit you are showing - the results have been exceptional - hate to say I can feel increased watt output but ... I can - it seems there was some frictional resistance in the older PF Adaptors with the Crank that increased as they wore out - perhaps it is psychological as well - hearing that squeak in your BB seems to sap your energy - this new all-in-one BB system has proved to be the correct way to tackle this problem - converting to SRAM was a better option but too costly

@nellyx1x493
@nellyx1x493 Год назад
Yes, I have the same frame as you and tried a couple of 30-24 step down adapter options that didn't work sufficiently- the correct tolerances between the two are seemingly impossible to achieve, when ideally the adapter should be a proper press-fit itself but for assembly practicality it has to be slip fit. Once the adapter gets a bit worn it wont prevent the crank from rocking or squeaking like a quacking duck. The solution you found is the best one.. I have similar good results from the praxisworks bb30-24 unit- the only problem comes when it's time to remove it, hammer time.... the Hambini converter is the ultimate. I noticed the better stiffness from the outward bearing too, which is daft from a super stiff frame hobbled by the too narrow bb30 (OSBB) stance...

i always take out the inner seals of the bb bearings since they come with duel sides but the inside of the bearings isnt exposed to anything, then ill clean out the thick grease and replace it with oil. also no / light contact seals seem to do the job rather than contact seals. easy and free gains when spending so much time and money for a race bike. its massively more of an improvement than buying ceramic bearings and its free. as a reference, the drive side crank arm of my shimano crank pendulums 4-5 times when dropping it from the 12 oclock position, with both arms installed. compare that to some that dont even drop and you can feel the resistance on every pedal stroke, i believe that adds up to a substantial amount over time

I have an SLR01 Five that I put a Kogel BB in and less than a year later the bearings feel quite rough even though I rarely ride in bad weather, pretty sure it's due to the same issue you found with this frame. I remember it being quite difficult to press in and if I remember correctly the "frame guide" that came with the bearing drifts I bought from Kogel did not fit into the frame so I'm probably going to end up doing the same honing process in the spring. If I lived in the UK I would certainly have you work on my bike, thanks for a great video and the honest assessment.

Is it like D shaped seat posts where you don't have to get the seatpost alignment right because it only fits in a single orientation? I'm wondering whether there's a higher damage risk if you crash. With a normal stem/steerer it's common for the handlebars to go out of alignment in a crash but that's better than breaking the steerer or handlebar.

just a quick fyi from a local bike shop mechanic, i agree barely any bike shop would go this far with a bike build simply because we dont have the time to spend an entire day on one bike, through any day we're maybe tuning up some 15-20 bikes as a small shop and all of these bikes are basically apollo/carrera bike shaped objects that people cannot simply afford to replace. i fully understand a boutique shop selling only £4000 to £14,000 frame builds should be doing this wih every bike but your average bike shop selling family bikes simply do not have the time or the staff to be spending a full day completely stripping a new bike down and rebuilding it as a part of the PDI process its simply not economical or profitable on bikes that sell to 98% of the market which are well under the £1000 mark.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec Год назад

Some rare skills there, not many bike shops with this type of time and attention to detail available. I wander if carbon frames and carbon epoxy are not susceptible to minor defects, it’s quite organic to plug prepreg into a mould vs alloy which is more of a mechanical science .

Yes. Prepreg layup is quite an art. Done badly and you get voids or lots off additional material to compensate. RTM like Time and 3T uses is generally better to eliminate voids and give more creativity in the weave.

I just finished building up the exact same frameset and have to say, the bb area is really bad. I already built quite a few of direct chinese brands and have never had such a poor spinning crankset after installing. Maybe it is because I used the standard shimano bb? I had to push the crankset in pretty hard. Thinking about changing the bb already. Maybe to a threadfit? Would you have one to recon for that frame and shimano 24mm crank? Other then that, the frame is built really nicely, like you mentioned, perfect fork and nice guidance inside the frame for the brake hoses and everything. I built it with the ics fully integrated handlebar and that was actually a nightmare! Compared to a directly chinese fully integraded handlebar, that bmc branded thing which costs 5 times the price, it‘s actually embarrassing how bad of a build it is. I hope it at least rides perfect! Thanks for the video and the insights! Greetings from Switzerland.

Sorry if this is duplicated, can't see the other comment: Rotor Aldhu makes a 24mm axle, and you can use a variety of power meters. I use the Power2Max spiders, with a 104bcd on my gravel bike (using a road Aldhu crank)

I think it's criminal that BMC and Zipp can let goods go out of their factories that are not 100%. I had a BMC 2 years ago that had a creak. It turned out that the head tube was manufactured misaligned and could not be fixed. The UK importer who actually found the fault to their credit gave me a full 4 figure refund. So no quibbles with them at all. Bike shops should not be 're-manufacturing' defective goods to make them work. Bike companies should get their processes and QC in order and make products that are not defective.
@Mapdec
@Mapdec Год назад
Bike shops have been doing this for years, centuries even. Every bike shop has reaming and facing tools to fix factory defaults on metal frames. Just the cycling industry is behind on dealing with carbon.

Meanwhile, my $1800 Australian, 2018 Giant Fathom, passed the crank spin test quite nicely (Shimano PF BB, so, 24mm axle). Gah..... This is why I'm not tempted by BMC.... Sticking to Giant and Merida bikes. Excellent warranty, easy to get replacements. Excellent QA (generally). But, otherwise, what a build :)
@lleweybyrne
@lleweybyrne Год назад
Kudos to you for sorting out BMCs lack of QC. But this just illustrates how appalling the manufacturing processes are even at the top end of the bike industry. The BB should be absolutely perfect when leaving the factory. End of story. It shouldn’t be praiseworthy when it’s sized correctly, just the norm. This is a premium product so the tolerances should be on a level with the aero industry, not your local agricultural metal bending shop.

As Mapdec says, with the inclusion of the 10t cog they're expecting you to go smaller in the front. Multiply the front by 10% to get the rough equivalent, so a 46t will ride roughly equivalent to a 50-51t on a traditional cassette (11-xx)

@@Glebaka 1. You're absolutely right and the 10t sucks. 2. In the video, it was stated that the user was both low power and low weight, so inefficiency will be a pretty small consideration, especially if they're looking for lower gears they probably won't even use the 10 or 11 tooth cogs, and certainly not in a high power situation. 3. I totally agree with you, and I don't think I'd ever run a 10t cog, I dont even like 11
@nellyx1x493
@nellyx1x493 Год назад
10tooth cog has no place on a road bike. Have it on the mtb, and you can feel through the pedals that it shouldn't be trusted - it's ok for mtb, but wouldn't want to be putting the meat down through the pedals on road in that gear. Ok for bimbling though I suppose. Bigger chainrings give a noticeably smoother pedal feel anyway, something you notice going from standard to compact, so why anyone would want to go even smaller is beyond me. What this is, is brands having to reinvent the wheel every so often to stay relevant.

You don't epoxy the bare carbon that's exposed after honing? I get that its a race bike, but water drips down the seat post and enters into the pressfit BB interface and it will fray the carbon. I'm sure most manufacturers just hone already cured carbon which is why creaking sets in eventually
@Mapdec
@Mapdec Год назад
Lol. The carbon was bare before honing. There is no clear coat or anything down there. Never is. The resin impregnates at every level if anything frays it’s because there are voids. Water shouldn’t be able to enter any part. It should be a solid of carbon and resin. Made well you can machine, cut and grind carbon. Steerer tubes are a good example. So much fear and misunderstanding arround Carbon. No wonder mechanics are afraid to touch it and let undersized junk out onto the unsuspecting public.
