Quick question what would you recommend for a g loomis spinning set up, I’d like to target coho and king. Would like a versatile rod that I can use spoons, spinners, jigs and a float, I’ll buy another cheaper rod for length to float if I have to but I was looking into the IMX pro series rods 8,6” or the e6x.
Watching your Coho setup video is like an opening ceremony of my salmon fishing season, spoon casting for Coho is my favorite by far. Hope more anglers do catch and release, maybe keep one or two each season so we can keep having fun fishing in the future. Thanks for sharing Rod, tight line!
@@FishingwithRod Rodney! If you love regular power pro just like I used too😅 try 8 carrier braid, a great one is the power pro super slick you will never go back to regular braid! Jesus loves you as well and God bless hopefully you’ll have a great coho season!
very enjoyable and interesting, was happy to see this for my breakfast entertainment and education! That more expensive reel just spun forever when you spun it lol. Ive never regretted spending more on a spinning reel~ I think I saw those spoons at my local shop, they say made in china on the back, they look exactly like the Mor Tac hammered Stilley spoons I used to buy from California, I still have a bunch and some of your spoons you sold me as well !
Excellent video Rod very informative for hook set and sensitivity also line stretch, compared to a spin cast set up for trout in Interior lakes. I will be doing more river fishing than lakes in the future"depending on the time of year", as I just bought a place on the river in the Shuswap. Again thanks for the tips. Tight lines everyone.
ah. had no idea. . I saw those Prime spinners on amazon about 3 years ago when I was looking for an alternative to my favorite Mepps flying C and BlueFox Vibrax spinners. I go through dozens of them. I considered getting the Prime spinners but i thought they were another cheaply made imported random amazon fishing lure that are barely less expensive than what i was using. ...next year
I really enjoy your videos....wish you did more in Washington State...I also use G-Loomis rods and only Shimano reels...my 2 favorite are the Vanford 3000 and the Symetre which they no longer make. I ordered some Prime lures and Spinners as I don't see them being sold in the U.S
Great choices! Just yesterday my friends and I were talking about how the Shimano reel and G.Loomis combo is the best available. Hopefully those Prime Lures will bring you many coho salmon this fall.
iam usually told by local tackle stores to go for 30lb or 40lb braid for salmon. may be not specifically coho but if i do want to use one set up for coho, chum and chinook all together. is the shimano 2500 enough for something like that? amazing video btw. all my vancouver fishing from few years ago up untill now is all because of your videos. cheers
Thanks Kumar. I think if you intend to target chinook salmon as well, then go with the 3000. The 3000 is still perfectly fine for coho salmon, I've used a couple of them for coho in the past. It'd also really depend on the size of chinook salmon too. The Clarus rods in the video should be able to handle chinook salmon up to 15 pounds. 30 or 40lb test main braided seems like an overkill. The most we've used is 20lb test, which I would put on the 3000 size reel.
@@FishingwithRod thats great thanks a lot. Its extremely hard to find the stradic 3000, i might greb the vapour instead. but ya thanks for clariying baout the braid weight.
I would, but the Fraser River will remain closed to salmon fishing until early November. By that time, the coho fishing is usually pretty dead, but we'll see.
I don't. Casting lures are designed so that you do not need additional weights to cast them. These ones are 2/5oz and heavier, there is enough weight for you to cast and retrieve them.
Thanks for the tips and tricks Rod.....just spent big $$$$$ at prime lures.. lol. may have to stop watching your channel..... expensive...lol!!! Appreciate your videos and your knowledge, has been very helpful.
Hi Rod, thanks for this amazing video! I have a couple questions: Can I use a swivel to attach the leader to the main line, or will that mess up the spoon's action? I only have 12lb fluorocarbon leader STS, is it worth it for me to go buy 15lb? I am also using Gibbs spoons, should I replace their hooks with the VMC ones in the video, or are they ok? Thank you so much!
Thanks Cameron, so because the fluorocarbon leader you’re attaching to the braided line is several feet long, you can’t really use a swivel to connect the two, it’d impede your casting. I would replace those hooks. You only get a few hook-ups per season so you want to make sure every single one of them sticks.
www.mobynets.com/our-nets.html The website doesn't have the model which I was holding in the video. It's call "D&K Special" and there are only a few available at the local stores around BC at the moment. Next availability isn't until spring I think but you could try to email Don on the website who builds all the nets to see what you would like. :)
It depends on your budget of course, but the new Nasci is fantastic! If you intend to do some saltwater fishing, then I'd get the Stradic, otherwise the Nasci would do just fine.
I'm cheap as heck but hate buying garbage, so I thought I'd chime in with some spendthrift advice that has helped me tremendously, for all us guys using hand-me-downs and ancient gear from our teenage years. The correct order to upgrade your crappy old gear to good quality stuff, starting with the most bang for least bucks... Number one is don't ever cheap out on hooks. Quality terminal tackle is the first place where spending a little more will land you a lot more fish. Second is your reel - there's almost no difference between a $300 dollar reel and a $3000 reel, but the difference between a $30 or $300 reel is everything. Good smooth bearings and easy casting for the win. And for my own experience, one or two reel sizes down from what everyone else uses is usually just fine. Nobody needs 500 yard of line and 20lbs drag. Braided mainline is your friend. Don't pay attention to the old stuck in their ways detractors. Learn some new knots, get better at casting, you'll never look back. You absolutely will land more fish. The last thing to upgrade is your rod. If what you got is working for you, don't change it unless you know EXACTLY what you want to change. Actually pay attention to videos like this and advice from your local tackle shop before you end up dropping good money on rods you won't like and don't end up using. And for my own experience on this one, like with reels, one size or strength less than everyone else is using works perfectly fine. Good luck out there 🤠🤙
Yep! I've done a few including this one from a couple years ago: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PMOlc9FORPM.html But I am planning to do an updated one to show what I may have done differently since then.
Thanks! I really love my Shimano and G.Loomis products, been using them for three decades now! I should post a photo of four generations of Stradic reels that I have. 😄
@@FishingwithRod Rod I know how you feel , I have a favorite fishing rod also .I can count on it to catch fish . It's magic . It's not expensive ,its experienced
Once again, great information Rod. I've only drift fished salmon but this looks great....and would equal packing far less gear. I actually have my levelwind drift setup spooled with braid backing and about 20' of mono as my main. Thanks again for all your great videos and information. It's very appreciated. *BTW...have you considered guiding? I do believe your services would be at a premium.
Rod, may I ask what you do when you are not educating us? Fishing spots where I live are being eliminated by gates, no parking signs and my aging body 💔. I haven't had an opportunity to use my salmon Rod in over a year.
Sylvia, the last two months when I am not educating, I am entertaining my kids who are home all the time for the summer holiday. 😆 But tomorrow... Tomorrow, first day of school! I am also off to Central Coast for five days tomorrow, then will be fishing my home river lots once I return. 🙂 That's really too bad about access over there! Here in Chilliwack, we are constantly advocating for good access for anglers of all ages, and the city has listened. We have a couple of spots where ramps have been built so someone like my 85 year old dad can walk down to the river bank without climbing down rocks. I hope someone around PA can do the same too.
Always enjoy your coho spinning setup videos which lured me into salmon fishing, still watching the older ones every now and then although I’ve already upgraded my gears to the top limit😄just love the gear talks. My favorite spoon has almost the same shape (‘little Cleo’ made by ACME), simple and effective, works very well for trout and steelhead smolt too.
Don’t worry about these little things. You’re sharing great info. Much appreciated! Your previous video of eating the Salmon Head with Kitty and dumping Sockeye Salmon was a good watch too. Thanks for taking the time to educate us about all the work you do
Hello. Thanks so much for posting this (admittedly I'm a year too late!). To ask a question: What's your opinion on using a swivel between the leader and the main line?
Yep you can certainly do that too, but the leader would just have to be quite short (2ft, 3ft max) otherwise you wouldn't be able to cast. Most likely it wouldn't make a difference between that or tying two lines together. I've even seen people catching fish by tying directly to the braided main line.
FINE BUSINESS! We are trolling for salmon off Sooke and it is over $50.00 for 5 gallons of non ethenol gas.You are right to spincast and save the gas for the road!P.S. My biggest coho was 20lbs and I have seen a few 30lb coho. The coho lately are smaller than they used to be.CHEERS!!!
I have stradic FL 3000 and a daiwa Procyon al 3000. Daiwa is better value. Drag is smoother and holds a 25% more line than the stradic. It is also $50 cheaper. I use it very often and it got spool by sturgeon twice, spool was hot. The reel still very tight without any issue. a suggestion for anyone who are looking for a decent reel
Super thanks Rod for another set up tutorial. Always enjoy listening to you as your advice is spot on. Prime has some excellent new toys for the fight and wish you both well in the partnership.
Yes the Clarus salmon/steelhead series has been discontinued, and replaced with a new series called Compre. The same specs are all still available in the new series.
I haven’t used the Vanford long enough to conclude that, but from the initial feel I seem to think Stradic is more durable. My current Stradic has had four seasons on it now and it’s still like new.
Thank you for another amazing video Rod. Quick question, I have a huge lure box and I have a few size 55 gibbs koho spoons I haven't batted a eye In years. Are they too big? And are they worth trying?
excellent video. I'm interested in going on the Salish Sea for Coho for the first time in 40 yrs. Your video helped imensly to inform me how to prepare. Most how to videos talk too fast and arent clear. You spent time in explaining important details. Thank you.
Great Vid Rod. We are opposite on lure colours. I start with the blue and silver every time since I have had good success with it. But lately, in the last few years, it has been copper and orange or green and silver crocks. But my best Coho set up remains twitching 3/8 ounce jigs. Have you ever done much twitching?
Just got into Coho salmon fishing this year and have already caught 4 fish so I decided to up my setup to a 9 ft G.Loomis 1MX to pair with my 3000 Vanford.
Thanks Rich! That Moby net is called D&K Special. It's not listed on the website and there is only a limited number in stock at the local retail stores right now (or maybe they're all gone now lol). It has the same hoop size as the Kamloops Trophy, just with a shorter handle which makes it easier to carry around for river fishing. I have done fly fishing for coho from time to time, maybe I'll do a video on it this fall. :)
Another great video👍 I see you are showing us the prime lures which I have a number of but would love to see what your go to that you know works are? I have had pretty good luck with blue by the way.
Thanks Andy. Kitty is back on Vancouver Island for the school year so I doubt you'll see her in the fall along the Chilliwack, but I'll be out with my wife Nina throughout the season so be sure to say hi. :)
Isn't fishing always a good time, and the fish is just a bonus? 😉 Your timing is prety spot on for the area. Coho salmon should be reasonably abundant by that time. The Lower Fraser River chum salmon stocks have not done well in the past couple of years and this year's return is not expected to be better either, but we shall see how it pans out.
3000 is the perfect size. I personally use 2500 but I tend to target only coho with that reel. 3000 would give you more options. Miravel is also an excellent choice as well!
You can find coho in just about all kinds of water really. I personally look for parts of the run where the current is at walking speed or slower, anywhere from 3 to 6 feet deep, and ideally with good “cover” on the bottom, meaning a variety of rock sizes.
What's worse, but related, is how a shoreline can be packed with people and 2 of them are catching all the fish on 2 different lures and almost everyone else is using the same lure.
Chinook salmon river setup: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PMOlc9FORPM.html Last year's chinook salmon episode: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-viP0q33sgPk.html A new one is being released today.
Thanks for so much great information Rod. I just picked up the 9' G Loomis you mentioned...beautiful feel. I got the medium fast action 8-12lbs. Is this rod too long and light for twitching jigs? I want to start throwing spoons and twitching jigs next season but everyone seems to say 7'6" med/heavy rod. What are your thoughts? 🤔 (I don't recall any of your videos twitching jigs?
That 8-12lb E6X is pretty awesome too, can handle bigger fish easily. It's too long for twitching jigs. You can do it, the test strength makes it fast enough for it, but a shorter rod like 7' is definiely a lot easier on your body for twitching. The twitching movement is pretty fast and repetitive, the shorter and faster the rod the less energy you'd have to expend on it.
If my main is mono, then yes. If my main is braided, then I almost always tie a section of the fluorocarbon to it as shown in this video. The only time when I would tie the lure directly to the braided main is if water visibility is low, or if I am fishing for species that couldn't care less about line visibility.
I use an Okuma ceclilo with a C-30 Okuma ceymar do you think this is a good setup? or should I switch the reel for something with larger line compacity? (I use this for Coho, Pink and Steelhead)
I’m not familiar with Okuma unfortunately. Take a look at the specs of those Shimano 2500 reels and note the spool capacity for 15lb braid, and see if it is similar to your reel.
The cost of Moby Nets is in that range because they are individually hand made in BC. The quality control is done by one person, so every single one going out would meet the quality expectations.
Thanks for this great video. I just walked out of the store with a new 9' G-Loomis e6x and a Shimano Vanford 2500! I decided to go with 20# Power Pro on the main with a P-Line fluorocarbon 15# leader. October is going to be a GREAT month. Tight lines everybody.
Congratulations on the purchase, you're going to love it. I was just using the same setup and connected with five coho salmon this morning. October will indeed be a great month.
