This is the first of six video lessons in the series Introduction to Improvisation, taught by Noam Sivan:
1. Improvisation in Music and Life
2. Baroque Improvisation
3. Classical Improvisation
4. Romantic Improvisation
5. Twentieth-Century Modal Improvisation
6. Freely Chromatic and Sound-Based Improvisation
In these six lessons, Prof. Sivan offers rich starting points for learning piano improvisation in a wide range of styles. The study of improvisation stimulates the imagination, encourages creativity, deepens compositional thinking, and fosters a personal relationship with our musical instrument.
Starting from important guiding principles for practicing improvisation, each lesson in the series contains specific exercises for developing and mastering improvisational skills in a given musical style.
Lesson 1, after introducing basic concepts, presents melodic improvisation. Lessons 2, 3, and 4, deal with three tonal styles, and provide tools for elaborating harmonic progressions with melodies and figurations, among other exercises. Lesson 5 shows methods for improvising with the following modes and scales: Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Pentatonic, Whole-Tone, and Octatonic. Lesson 6 explores freely chromatic improvisation, as well as sonic resources which include the inside of the piano soundboard.
The first lesson is available for free. The entire series is hosted on the subscription platform Tonebase.
All the musical demonstrations in the series are improvised in real time during the six lessons.
Several extra features enrich the series, as presented on the Tonebase platform:
* Most of the improvised demonstrations and exercises also appear in staff notation (score view) below the video, with detailed analytic annotations.
* Additionally, occasional on-screen text, displaying the inner thoughts of the improvising pianist in real time, give a glimpse into the decision-making process during the improvisation.
* Six pdf workbooks, corresponding to the six lectures, contain detailed instructions for creating improvisation exercises. Those who are serious about practicing improvisation regularly, would have plenty of practice materials to keep them busy developing their skills for months ahead.
