Whilst listening to the sermon I decided to change the quiet organ piece I was going to play and decided to play (and compose) something reflective on the spur of the moment on the piano during communion. I sat down at the piano and wondered in my mind what the journey for Jesus on Palm Sunday would be like and 5 seconds later started this. I was visualising it whilst composing it. It features 2 hymns - Ride on, Ride on in Majesty! and All Glory Laud and Honour. Whilst it's a joyous day, it is tinged with sadness as the darkness sets in days later. This is reflected in the music, going from major to minor and I suddenly found myself incorporating a Middle Eastern style theme into the piece too, which took me totally by surprise when I was playing it! I especially like the hymns in the minor-with a Bach chorale-like feel to one of them. They sound so different.
I recorded it later in the evening (one take), after listening to the service again on RU-vid and tried to play it exactly how I did in the service.
It's not perfect, hence why it was an improvisation and I would change some parts and shorten it but the timing fitted with the communion length. I added a couple of images and some crowd noises to bring more life into it. I hope you find some peace in this. Please note that I intend to make a composition out of this so the music (apart from the hymn in the major) is copyright protected.
