Thank you for you "human training" on impulse control. After seeing your first program, I have been working on impulse control with my 18-month-old rescue Lab/Terrier (who only knew life in a crate in a humane society with 200+ other dogs) My girl Ginger used to BOLT in the porch slider door and zoom around the living room table like a crazy girl. This was not safe for two senior citizens!! I now have her trained to stop at each of our 5 rugs (between the slider door and the kitchen counter.) She now stops on the rug where I touch it, I stay "sit here" (or here) and she sits and waits. Then she gets her fresh blueberry treat. We do this at each rug spot until she ends up sitting at the kitchen counter where the full dog bowl is waiting. THEN: We walk calmly to the nearby laundry room, where she sits and waits on the rug, one last time. I put the food bowl down on her food and water matt and she sits and waits while I count to 15, then I release her. Not bad for a high energy rescue that has only been with us 6 months! We have only been practicing this now for about 2-3 weeks. Good girl!

We do this with a partner holding a lead and having the dog on a collar, setting them up for success, we then extend times , and then mix them up. It goes in hand though with other impulse training.

Victoria Stillwell is the BEST. She trains with compassion, unlike Cesar Milan who is a bully in my opinion.

I rehabilitate pitbulls that have been used for fighting, professionally, and train all kinds of dogs for a living. I've worked with dogs just as aggressive as the ones Cesar has dealt with; if those methods work for him, that's fine, and I'm not here to bad mouth anyone. However, I would bet my life, certification, professional, and personal integrity that positive training is the most long-lasting, humane, and most importantly, effective way to deal with a dangerous, damaged dog.

I also have a Maltese who's 10 months old and he used to go crazy while waiting for his food. He used to jump on his bowl before I set it on the mat. I've been training him to sit and stay for a while but never used it to give him his food. In just 3 days he is now waiting quietly until I tell him myself to eat. I'm so happy he is calm during mealtimes! This video really helped.

He is now 6 months and learned real good to wait. when I am putting food in his bowl he steps back and sits. He looks at me once I say eat :) and then eats. I also trained him not to stare at my food when I am eating. I tell him 'its my food go and play' then he sits down or goes with his toy.

with this technique victoria also has another technique where she teaches the dog that you coming closer to the dog food means a good thing. its where she has an empty bowl and gives the dog a little bit of food while being near him and the bowl and touching the dog as to mean that her being near the dog and touching the dog and the bowl can mean more food.,

Yeah I noticed the cut too. You have a point about the body language for sure, which is an issue for a lot of people who can't 'look at themselves' (notice her sideways hand gesture? pathetic). In my opinion kikopup's advice is way better because she continually rewards the dog for every small increase in difficulty... so the dog sees each step as a way to get a bigger reward. Here, the reward is fixed, and withheld even though the dog IS trying, so of course he gets frustrated.

There are lots of "survival" behaviors that are simply unnecessary in a domesticated dog. Especially in single dog homes. Our dogs are provided meals each and every day, there is no need to guard food to survive.

Also "Leerburg" enterprises is one of the most controversial behavior/training sources out there. Their methods border on abuse at times and their basic principles of pack behavior and dominance related issues have been proven to be faulty years ago.

Only problem with what you call food aggression is that Food aggression is not really an aggression behavior its called Resource defenceive behaviour, and is a natural and good behaviour a matter of survivial.
@FBViborg
@FBViborg 12 лет назад
Well the only reson for a dog to become aggressive is if used aversive control. No dog is born aggressive, thers a reson and 9 out of 10 its due to aversive control period. I'm sure VS can work with aggressive dogs, I have 4 close friends works positive reinforcement, and it works. I use positive as well, and I have no problems what so ever

Aggression comes from something els not from birth. Its true what you say about missing socialization and/or insufficient exercise can have the effect of aggressive behaviour, I cant disagree with that. But Aggression used as a mean of establishing pack rank, no thats no true. Sure there can be alot of noise, showing teeth and a lot of "fake" fighting. But real fights and true Aggession no way, real fights could starve a compleat pack to deat if pack members were injured

too much going wrong here - a hand signal that hasnt been taught yet............ a word that hasnt been conditioned (WAIT)..........so ,he fails..........this is far more effective WITHOUT words or signals in the beginning - after he manages to figure out what the pattern is? THEN you can name it. We do this to avoid what's referred to as poisoning cues.

Instead of spending time explaining the technique she didn't use, why not use that time to show how the dog behaved just before eating instead of trying to fool the viewers with that cut scene @ 2:20 to 2:22. Unless they, told him off, manhandled him, made him submissive towards her, or dominated him just before he started eating? Wrong timing on that cut scene; it left some viewers wondering.

This dog does not see her as an authority figure even though she controls his food. Right, the dog was frustrated and wanting to get out of there. She did not have the dog's attention or give clear definite signals so that he would know what she wants him to do. Not a good example of Dog Training.
@americandingo6715
@americandingo6715 6 лет назад
She didnt need to give a command. Impulse control in this context is teaching the dog that his behavior...calm patience etc gets him what he wants. I would have gone about it slightly diffetent but its just 1 of many ways to teach impulse control.
@americandingo6715
@americandingo6715 6 лет назад
You do not have to be an authority figure to teach this. A 10 year old child can do this as long as you. Dont have an aggressive dog or a dog that would knock a kid down.
@Amilyash
@Amilyash 12 лет назад
Please stop misusing the word aggression , don't use big words you don't fully understand. In the true meaning of aggression the previous poster is correct. dogs are NOT born aggressive without some medical issue in play.True aggression is a symptom/effect not a cause.

she acts weak, in my opinion... the dog inches up toward her and the food each time she says in her weak... noo... voice while bent over. she is unclear in both her body language and her voice... I would get frustrated and run around too. My puppy is 4 months, and waits for food like a champ, and I am not mean or negative to him... my body language is clear, and so are my cues. Notice the cut at the end, because that is how long it took the dog to figure her out! ugh
