Dateline: May 12, 1996. After his Indy 500 qualifying run was disallowed the day before because the car was underweight, Arie Luyendyk puts himself right back in the record books, setting the one- and four-lap IMS official track records, which stand to this day. Listen as IMS Hall of Fame member and legendary PA announcer, the late Tom Carnegie, brings the dramatic run to a crescendo!

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum is one of the world's premier destinations dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of motorsports competition and motor vehicles, with emphasis on the history of the Indianapolis 500-Mile Race. The Museum, located inside the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway oval, is open 363 days per year (except Thanksgiving and Christmas) and offers year-round IMS track tours (pending weather and track availability). Bet he didn't realize it at the time but that would be the last time Mr. Carnegie ever spoke those words over the loud speaking at Indy. That record has not been beat. With all the new speed robbing rules and regulations I doubt it ever will be.

@@brandond5209 In fact, lots of people at the time were pretty aware that this record might never be broken again, in spite of the upcoming regulation changes for 1997. ABC put a camera with Carnegie during his call, and a crew member explicitly said on the mic that they were witnessing 'a record for the ages'. I still hold some hope that someone will be able to break through Arie's record. Dixon just completed a qualifying lap at almost 233, we're not that far. Maybe in 10-15 years...

@@diamonddave7891The current cars and the 90s cars produce speed in different ways. The 90s cars had more power, and were faster on the straights. The current cars have to carry speed through the turns, and basically go full throttle the whole way around. That means they are always on the edge, and as the tires get hotter, they start sliding more in the turns, and since mid-corner speed is the key to a fast lap, the more they slide, the slower their lap is.

Also, look at that line he held. So smooth all the way around. Only Rick Mears have I seen run a qualifying run that smooth before. Also, such class of all the the pit crews clapping as he drove by back to the pit. 90s Indycar will never be beat, never be duplicated. I like where the series is now and it has a bright future, but the 90s were just something special.

Next year we’ll come back to this as a potentially fallen record. 2023 update: slightly closer and the first 235 single lap averages since this race.

This happened the year of the C.A.R.T/IRL split, just imagine if C.A.R.T teams would have raced that year in Indy with all the technology those engines had. They would have had a 4 lap average of 245 mph.
@Jonathan83X
@Jonathan83X 5 лет назад
Maybe not 245, but it would have been in the 240-242 speeds easily, especially Ganassi's cars. His Honda/Reynard cars would have lit up the speedway considering how dominant they were in 1996.

@@Jonathan83X Ganassai and Penske. The year before Penske failed to have all 3 of his cars make the 500 so he would have came back probably with Beast II.
@Jonathan83X
@Jonathan83X 5 лет назад
@@allstarchris1 As cool as that sounds, I highly doubt Tony George would have let Penske use another super engine like he did in 1994. Although, I do agree Penske would have came back with a vengeance in one form or another. He might even switched to Reynards for the month of May like he did in the 80's with the March if his chassis wasn't getting it done. If there is one thing I know about Penske, he doesn't take failing at Indy well. He would do whatever it takes to redeem himself, like he did from 2001-2003 when he won three in a row when returning to the Speedway after a 6 year absence.

However it was probably embarrassing to long time Indy fans seeing those engines changed in 1997 and seeing 35 cars in the race as well. The IRL was so bad but never should have been organized by Tony George was a USAC guy at heart as was the rest of the old guard that was still alive and having a influence at the facility and Indianapolis. But all the IRL was Indianapolis Motor speedway saying we hate CART and they are a sacrilege to the little guys from USAC that cried like babies after was formed and dominated from 1979-1995.
@Jonathan83X
@Jonathan83X 5 лет назад
@@robminmonaca I couldn't agree more. Tony George severely tarnished open wheel racing with his power hungry ways. I can understand some of his complaints with not enough Americans in the series and costs too high, but all he did was make things ten times worse. He should have just formed his own CART team to help American drivers get in. I mean, he did make Vision Racing for awhile. Imagine if did that instead of making the IRL. It might have meant drivers like Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and others that went to NASCAR would have more than likely went to IndyCar instead because they would've had the door opened for them. I'm not going to pretend CART was perfect, but it certainly was better than the IRL. The main reason CART went under is because they had horrendous leadership and internal friction from most of the big team owners. Had the series had a much more stable foundation, I believe it would have outlasted the IRL because they certainly had the funds, cars, engines and drivers to do so.

The reason why they weigh the car & driver in tech is so they can take into account the size of the driver’s balls needed to pilot such machinery.

Anthony Kernich actually the repave and huge boost was to wipe off the CART drivers that set track records in the previous years and don’t forget how slow the cars in 1997 were. The reason why they were allowed the turbos and CART equipment was due to the IRL equipment a year behind in development.
