Indeed you will be astonished to see this American Couple make this movie in 1930 while travelling and coming to Lucknow and Varanasi. Residency and Imambara are wonderful. Observe traditionally dressed locals et al. We found it quite interesting.

A line in the video says that "the ashes of dead are unceremoniously thrown in the water of the Ganges in Benaras". You do not need any ceremony on top of a ceremony. The maker of the video probably did not realise that having ones' ashes immersed in Ganga in Kashi is itself the greatest last ceremony for a Hindu. Very few Hindus can hope its done for them. As per belief, it gives instant moksha.

Jawad Haider::: We visited Varanasi 4 years ago. It is such a marvelous city, one of the oldest inhabited cities in the world. When I was walking on the roads of Varanasi, I was wondering, " I am walking on the same same place where Rama, Laxmana, Sitadevi, walked, The Pancha Pandavas walked, great sages like Agastya, Angirasa, Vasishta walked, Satya Harishchandra walked...... Wow!!! What a great place!!"

There maybe some disadvantages of the British Empire, but do not forget that they had also banned evil superstitions in India like Sati, encouraged women education and what not. Also you can google and search that Britain is one of the safest country with very polite people. They have also donated a lot of money to India. And before the British came many other empires have looted India. So, there is no point in blaming them. Blaming others will not help us to go ahead.

Fascinating , 3rd party look at the the Indian Rising. I've often wondered what would have happened if the British ( not just the English , but Scots & Irissh too) had been kicked out. Maybe no unified state , but no partition too. A comparison to Lexington , what a joke. The British were defending their lives , but invoked the most savage and brutal retribution that ended up in freedom a century later , but sowed the seeds of partition by flavouring the Muslims and betraying the Sikhs and Bengalis

Love from Britain. Showing a time when we were ruled by rich elites. Working people from the UK, India and the whole "Empire" were traded badly. Fortunately love won and we look after each other in our new Commonwealth of which glorious India is the dominant power of.

@@ammirza8323actually we were. During the 16th and 17th centuries Barbary pirates raided the west coast of England and kidnapped thousands of men, women and children. The women were sold in the middle eastern slave markets into the harem system. It's an almost forgotten part of our history, we moved on.

Orthodox? May be. But we love it. Though we are orthodox, we respect other faiths also. Thats why Hindustan is called a sub-continent. So many religions. So many cultures. So many dress codes. Some many food habits. So many languages. So many traditions. Experience our hospitality. We serve food with a smiling face. We compel you eat more. We do not allow you to take your plate to the cleaning sink. We give water to wash your hands and feet after lunch. We offer a towel to wipe your feet and hands. We offer you beetle leaves and nuts. Our culture is so rich, that you cannot forget our hosptality all through your life. If you forget, well i do not have a word to describe you. Do you know, in India, more than 10 million people are offered free food daily in temples like Tirupathi Sri Balaji Mandir, varanasi, sai mandir etc. If some nomads call us orthodox, we still like it.

Would have been nice to have some historical background; during the "Indian Rebellion" of 1857, Lucknow was besieged by mutineering sepoys (Indian soldiers enrolled in the British army), for almost 150 days (first and second siege). The beginning of the video shows the ruins of the Lucknow Residency (the walls clearly pockmarked by bullets and cannonballs), one of the important defence lines of the British.

Proud of your City? You can't be serious. You are proud of what it was but definitely can't be for what it has been turned into today. Just look around. Filth, crime, turning into ruins with people pissing and writing over historical walls everywhere, UP politicians constantly looting people after they elected them for their caste, religion or nepotism. How can you love Mayawati ke Hathi in Lucknow?

What's shocking is that Benaras ghat hasn't changed much in the last 100 yrs, skyline of temples and customs desperately need to be redeveloped for the 21st century so that we are able to maintain a fine balance between traditions and water pollution. All illegal shanties and encroachers need to be booted out and ghat structures reconstructed !!

A tremendous film to view which was made by the American couple. Looking at the history of the place around that time, were the visitors possibly engaged with Missionary/Church projects. There were many within India at the time. Our direct ancestor Pastor Matthew Stephens was pastor at the Methodist Church(Central I think) and his family were active in the church and vicinity. At the beginning of the film, it briefly showed Charbagh station. My direct ancestors were PWI's, Station Masters, Drivers or fireman around that time for a number of decades. As we visited Lucknow, we were also informed that one of our ancestors was caretaker of ''The Residence'' for a while. I could go on, but don't wish to be boring. As one can see, my connection to the place is large, and look forward to the next interesting video and even better to visit again. I wish everyone good health.

Worst thing that British have done to then Hindustaan is division in a hurry . The guy took just a few days to draw a line on map which separated 2 nations , without any planning , arrangements and agreements which caused deadly riots . It was worse than their 200 year rule .
