About Lion and Lioness --
The female, or lioness, is considerably smaller. The male's coat is usually buff yellow or orange-brown; lionesses are more consistently tawny or sandy. The male's outstanding characteristic is his mane. Lions are unique among cats in that they live in a group, or pride, often consisting of about 15 individuals.
Female lions are the main hunters. While they're out looking for food, the males guard the pride's territory and their young. A lion's roar can be heard up to eight kilometres away. Lions scent mark their territory, using their wee, to create a border.
While she is an expert hunter able to outsmart her prey and take down a target twice her size, she is also a devoted mother, protecting her cubs and teaching them the skills they need to survive.
The social structure of the pride is based on specific roles. Lionesses are the primary hunters, while dominant males are responsible for protecting the pride's territory. Lion prey includes antelopes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo, and other grassland animals.
A lioness can reach a speed of up to 72 kmph. Lions are known to be one of the most dangerous predators in the forest. If they catch a prey, it becomes not only difficult but impossible to escape from the strong jaws and hurtful claws. However, very few people would know that a lioness is a better hunter than a lion.
The strongest male lion will eat first, followed by other members of the pride. Lionesses will feed themselves first, with cubs getting the scraps. Ever wondered what animal can kill a lion? Lions sometimes become the victims of their intended prey.
The lionesses' strong maternal instincts are at the foundation of the pride's social bonds. As a group, they are responsible for raising and nurturing the cubs. They teach essential survival skills, including hunting techniques and social behaviors, which ensure the continuity of the pride's legacy.
Lion manes are generally there to impress and intimidate - but not all males have them, and in some circumstances, lionesses are also known to sprout fuzzy facial hair. No animal species is more emblematic of the African savanna than the lion, whose males sport lustrous, shaggy crops of hair around their necks.
Male lions are more attached with each other instead of their mates and cubs as they see the lionesses as mating partners and the cubs as their gene carriers, though very few males do form a bond with their sons and daughters.
They show affection toward one another by grooming, rubbing heads, and resting together. The males protect the pride from other males or predators, and mate with many females.
Lionesses are the primary hunters. They are smaller, more agile than males and use teamwork to bring an animal down. After a successful hunt, all the lions in the pride share the meal. There is a pecking order, with adult males eating first, followed by the lionesses and finally the cubs.
Some evidence suggests female lions may be more attracted to males with longer, darker manes, which could imply that a healthy head of fur lets females know that the male is a desirable candidate for breeding.
Females usually give birth to one to four cubs after a gestation of about 3 1/2 months. Cubs typically nurse for six months but start eating meat at three months.
Both sexes are polygamous and breed throughout the year, but females are usually restricted to the one or two adult males of their pride. In captivity lions often breed every year, but in the wild they usually breed no more than once in two years.
Male lions probably back off because the lionesses are the primary hunters. If the females were injured, they would not be able to provide food for the rest of the pride.
Lionesses are much faster, which makes them better hunters than lions.
Also lions are made to fight and lioness are good at killing. So a lioness can only win over a adult lion when the lion is getting pity on her and is not in mood to kill her.
Lions are known in many cultures as the king of animals, which can be traced to the Babylonian Talmud, and to the classical book Physiologus. In his fables, the famed Greek story teller Aesop used the lion's symbolism of power and strength in The Lion and the Mouse and Lion's Share.
lion, (Panthera leo), large, powerfully built cat (family Felidae) that is second in size only to the tiger; it is a famous apex predator (meaning without a natural predator or enemy). The proverbial “king of beasts,” the lion has been one of the best-known wild animals since earliest times.
The lion is a wild terrestrial animal called the king of the forest. The lion is a strong animal with a strong body, a big head, a majestic mane, and two fierce eyes. They have strong claws and sharp teeth, which help them hunt their prey and eat the flesh
