You worked so hard to try and save that calf. Sadly, it didn't live. To lose three in the same year after having so many healthy babies, this year and in previous years helps all of us realize how amazing the miracle of birth really is. And how things can go wrong. I'm glad you had help from the other couple and Marrissa. Thanks for keeping us updated on the good and hard parts of bison ranching.

You're doing a great job Dusty. It's what every rancher goes through w/their animals. I helped my Dad pull a calf that just wouldn't be born. Dad did artificial insemination & I know he spent quite a bit on this calf. The vet finally came & did a c-section & it was too late. But I also remember a terrible late March blizzard that lasted for several days. Dad took the tractor up to feed & came back w/his first Charlois calf thru AI.The calf had gotten trampled as the whole herd & their babies had gotten backed into a fence corner trying to get away from the wind & driving snow. (Opposite temp issue from you but just as deadly.) Much to my mother's chagrin, he brought this muddy half dead calf into the house where he put him in the bathtub & we kept adding warm water & holding his head above water. (We had no electricity so the propane water heater was the only source of heat.) Getting this beautiful pure white calf out of the water & treated it to probably the best rubdown of its life. Then we heated some milk on the camp stove while Dad gave him a shot of antibiotic (We always had one-half of one shelf dedicated to all Dad's animal drugs.). We fed the calf the warm milk dosed w/some whiskey & left it sleeping on the bathroom rug covered w/towels & blankets. We were home for a visit at the time & my daughter was pretty little & fascinated by a calf in the bathroom. She got up on her tiptoes & opened the door. She got quite a surprise when the calf got up & bawled at her. The calf of course, peed on the floor at which point Mum said that was it & it had to go so out to the barn it went till strong enough to make it on it's own. I can't remember what happened to that calf but I know Dad told me once that he had kept the hide. So anytime you're dealing w/animals, you're always doing what you think is best given the information you have available at the time. Hang in there & I'm sending blessings for rain & some cooler temps. Have you thought about a rain dance?

To see the tears stinging your eyes after the good counsel you sought and the effort and danger you risked shows who you are. Question for you: I realize that they are naturally wild by nature, but they clearly have feelings, deep instinct and intelligence. Can you calm them at all with human speech? I am a city girl, but look forward to being much closer to animals in the future and love learning about them. I believe in God’s original edict that we were meant to be animals’ caretakers under very different conditions, tho he made some wild and some domestic. 😊 You have managed to harness a wild animal as stock. Amazing.

Thanks for sharing your experience Mr. B. Just from watching the whole ordeal unfold, anyone can see you and all involved gave your best efforts out there in the trenches with those wild bison. Your guests got the real deal and tufted it out right along with you and all y'all did well given the circumstances. What better true on the job training could they have gotten than this. Now if they still want to care for bison after this experience then I say good on 'em because they'll be just as fine a pair of caretakers as you and your family. My heart was riveted the whole telling and viewing of this unfortunate event but too sad and too bad things turned out the way they did. Y'all gave it your best and kept a safe level head and heart throughout the whole situation. You indeed showed your expertise. I applaud your valiant efforts. With all that is said and done the humane thing was that that poor animal didn't lay and suffer in the sun but fell asleep in death in a more cooler environment. Thanks again for sharing and to coin your own words, "just bison ranching."

I'm sorry for this loss. We live outside of Yellowstone NP, where we see many calves each year, both bison and elk. In the wild, when a calf is in trouble or rejected, you are forced to allow nature to take its course, and not intervene. But it's different when it's your own herd. You made the right decision, but ultimately, nature decided this one. But it wasn't because you didn't do everything you could for a different outcome, even risking your own safety. Kudos to all involved, you did a fine job!

I'm sorry the calf didn't make it! You did everything you could. Good idea to have a "rescue plan" and closer facilities! The back barn and/or even in each field a little storage shed with w a small water jug and a small tub, some hay and cubes, critical medical supplies (obviously not colostrum)and some cattle panel... It's good you had extra help for this adventure, esp with cattle experience if not bisin. I admire that you raise these close-to wild animals! Much different from cows or horses. I also enjoy watching your sense of how to handle them. Thanks for sharing. God Bless.

So sorry for the loss of the calf. I helped my father-in law with his dairy cows. I remember we had a similar situation. It was only 100 acres of pasture. I drove a hay wagon out to the calf . My father-in law put the calf in the wagon. Mom was upset as you’d expect. We made it to the barn, mom followed. Father- in law had some colostrum, started to feed the calf. Mom was trying to push him away from her calf. Said a few cuss words to mom, didn’t do any good. After about an hour the calf stood up and started suckling. That was an experience I will never forget

My sister and her husband raised buffalo (they maintained about 80 head) out west for a number of years. A premature bison was born and abandoned by its mother so my sister (employed as a nurse) rescued the little fellow and started an IV to hydrate him while gathering resources to save him. My sister became the surrogate mom to the young calf and stayed bruised for several years as young ones love to butt. His name was Wobble (jokingly, after he was neutered, they called him Wobsteer behind his back). He was very tame and traveled to the State Fair a number of years to promote bison raising and the health benefits of eating bison. He never got back with the herd and remained a pet until his early death at 22 (I think). I know that she really enjoys this channel and watches it often, but they still have their land and many animals to tend. I will call her to let her know about this episode and perhaps she can add to the story.

This summer's heat has been hard on all animals...I once saw a dairy calf drop to the hard ground during birth and it died from the fall.(it was sad but unpreventable at the time) I know this is much more than just the loss of 1 red dog, but we know you did your best...maybe it was an odd situation with visitors, but thank goodness for their past farm experiences and the extra help so quickly... thanks for an honest farm video...❤️🙏✝️ For those non farmers...even a dairy cow momma that is handled at least 2 times a day EVERY day can get dangerous and agressive protecting their babies...❤️❤️

You could have done nothing more. You are a stockman. When things go right none of us appreciate just what a miracle, successful birth really is. All deaths leave a scar, especially with youngsters. We were working with an endangered sheep breed and we knew every loss was another nail in the breed’s coffin, so to speak. It pushes you to work harder but in general our annual figures went up and eventually the breed increased nationally. I think we payed a small part in that improved status but some years I felt that the failures in raising healthy stock were a mountain too high to overcome. Others were doing the same. In the end we succeeded in saving this rare breed and the numbers and status is much safer now. I still think that the births that succeeded were miraculous. So much can go wrong but it took years for me to appreciate success for what it was and, like you, failure s weighed heavily on us.

Maybe you should talk to your supplier about getting them to deliver what you need in future emergency situations. Don’t you have a veterinarian close to your ranch that could deliver to you in emergency situations. I’m very sorry that your calf died but you all did what you could to save this calf in a very dangerous situation. When you have pregnant Bison maybe keeping them closer to your barn is something you should think about in the future. Great job at trying to save this beautiful animal you all should be proud of what you did. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻. I’m Australian and have had a love of bison since watching the great Americans Westerns on a television my Dad would hire for us to watch over the school holidays. Thank you for what you are doing for these magnificent animals. ❤️

It is sad news and you did what you could to save him. This was a learning experience you had to go through to try to save the next one. You also had to deal with the mother having just lost a baby, that can't have been easy either. Good job to all of you and take care.😢❤‍🩹🦬

You should get all those 2 yr olds up close to the barn so it's easier to keep an eye on these mamas and babies. Keep colostrum on hand, along with any other medications that might be needed. Always be prepared for catastrophies....You've had your share this year.😢😢😢 You and Marissa are amazing buson iwners. Bless you and keep up the good eork. I was praying for a miracle at the end.😢

You are an amazing owner. Pregnancy is not a normal state even as breeders most seems normal you did the right thing to try but probably something was wrong that could be seen god now has him we should count the blessings we’ve recieved and understand the losses we are handed and know you are supported. The losses are rough I can tell you about every child I lost in the ER over the past 40 years when you do all you can you must accept there is some else making those decisions and pray for their souls and turn to helping the family. My prayers are with you.

When you have things happen, as harsh as they are, you learn from each experience. I'm so sorry you had to go thru this. I'm glad you tried your best. I had a scare this yr myself so I have colostrum n milk replacer on hand. If you have it you may not need it. God bless you. Please we need rain.too

Dusty, life is not always fair. You have experienced the good but unfortunately, the bad happens as well. For a while, the bad overshadows the good. Sometimes. You and Marissa, and Kevin, your mother, Doc Parsons, Brooks, and even Maya and Thor have done exceptionally well. You continue to do what you do, Dusty. Some things are in God's plan and we don't understand, but the red dog could have had a serious illness which would have caused it to suffer. Hang in there, all of you! The good will come again! ❤ Praying for you and the family!

Wow, this was something else. So glad you all could save the red dog. Goodness, that was a long way. So very sad, I'm so very sorry! He looked like he might make it. They sure did, I was wondering if they changed their mind. This was a very real situation. Have the feed on hand with all necessary equipment.
