One aspect of the film that I initially criticized was the dialogue. My first thought was, Wow - these characters sound like idiots...and then it occurred to me...of COURSE they do. We're seeing Johnny's story, from his perspective; the dialogue is presented as dumb because we see the victims through the same lens as Johnny. He isn't eavesdropping on their conversations and being amused by their wit or impressed by their intellect; he's seeing these kids as total asshats (and so was I).
That's an amazing insight! I thought the same thing about the dialogue and was like, yeah, that wouldn't happen. HAHA But of course, it totally makes sense from the perspective!
Yes! Love this review. I'm so glad I got the chance to see this is theaters. I loved the slow paced, quiet setting, perspective and camera shots, lore, and the wild, ruthless kills. It's really refreshing to see smaller budget movies push the horror genre with creativity and practical effects. So stoked I found your channel!
Have you seen Unmasked Part 25? It's one of these fairly early slasher deconstructions (in this case, basically merging Jason Vorhees with Frankenstein's monster to create a literate sympathetic, if overbearing, killer protagonist whose main conflict is feeling trapped in a cycle of samey sequels.
I'm intrigued also! Thank you. I've seen the trailer and it was underwhelming. I've got to see it now. Enjoy your day. I appreciate the hard work you do.
I enjoyed 'In a Violent Nature,' but the pace needed to be tightened up a bit. The movie is 95min long; could have easily trimmed 15-20min off the runtime (5 from final scene and at least 10 out of all the walking scenes). Other than that, it has a lot going for it; the kills, the effects, the killer, the lore and the camera work are all very good. I really hope it gets a sequel.
I like that it channeled Friday The 13th... but then went on a different path with mainly focusing on the POV of Johnny, bravely eschewing musical cues that didn't involve music on the stereo or streaming. I liked the realistic aftermath at the end. Very nice costume design, hope it inspires cosplay.
I loved the film Piz, but I could've done without so much of the walking, and the end scene was a bit of a let down, but that being said the sheer brutality of the kills made it all worth it
Nice review dude! I was on the fence about this movie, but your review nudged me in the direction to go purchase a ticket. Keep up the good work and subscribed.
It's not really the first movie to be the slasher's point of view. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon did a similar idea. It is a documentary style that also switches perspectives and subgenres at the twist. I look forward to see In A Violent Nature, although I think I would want a tightened-up cut.
I’ve also seen Behind the Mask, but it’s a very different kind of movie than In a Violent Nature. This is a real slasher movie from the perspective of a silent killer, while Behind the Mask is a satire.
I first saw this in theaters and I kind of thought it was boring I knew it was the perspective of the Killer but watch it again a second time I completely changed my mind on this movie I love this movie and it's one of my favorite slahsers of this year! The ambiance and just the soothing of this movie really helps and works I felt really relaxed and watch this movie which is weird coming from a killer that's walking in the woods in this movie I hope it gets a physical release because I would definitely would want to watch this over and over again I think it definitely deserves to be watched on the big screen! This movie almost felt like ASMR
He walked in a big circle around a house after blowing the horn and then wandered around for several more minutes before attacking the person he was after. He definitely wandered aimlessly in this movie, quite a bit. But thanks for trying to stand up for this movie.
That's not what happened at all. He put a long stick on the steering wheel to blow the horn and make the victim come out. Also as he walked around to sneak behind the victim while the horn was blaring, we see another camper see Johnny out of the window.
@@kee931000 i must have been dreaming then, because i followed johnny as he walked all the way around a house. Whatever the reason, we walked for a long time. My feet were hurting after that movie was over.
Spoilers: the point of the "long end" was to demonstrate that all Johnny wanted was the locket to stop killing. Yes the fire ritual would have made him slumber but they could made had a truce and gave him the locket back. After she gave it back he stopped chasing her, but she doesn't know that. It "drags on" to show how she will be scared and looking over her shoulder for god knows how long. She has no idea she safe but her life is forever changed.
I gotta see this! I heard about it previously and I was mildly interested but now it’s sounding like something I’ll really be into. Are you following Junesploitation at all this year? I haven’t in the past but I’m giving it a shot. For Roger Corman(Day1), I watched The Undead, which he directed back in the 50s, and Crime Zone, a low budget sci-fi flick he produced in the 80s. The Undead was decent and had a couple memorable moments. I was very surprised by Crime Zone. It has David Carradine and an early performance from Sherilyn Fenn of Twin Peaks. It gets a little messy towards the end but overall it’s a solid sci-fi movie. Kind of felt like a really low budget Paul Verhoeven but without the satire.
I was highly disappointed with this film. I did not hate it. But I found myself nodding off quite a bit. Just too much walking. I liked that approach for a while, but then they just did it over and over and over and it bored the shit out of me. There are some great kills though. Although, I felt like the log splitting machine death went on for way too long and the entire time it was going, I was just wondering when it was going to stop. I understand what they were going for, but it just went on for too long. Extremely impressive effects, though, especially in that sequence.I think the main reason I was disappointed by this is that I went into it with extremely high expectations because of the concept. A flawed film. But all in all I enjoyed it. I would say that my biggest gripe is the extended dialogue sequence in the truck at the end. We spent all of this time following the killer and narrowly escaped him. And now we are in this truck driving away, and this woman is going on and on about the nature of killing and animals and so forth, And my eyes were glued to the tree line passing by in the background, waiting for the killer to pop back out, but he never did. It was extremely anti-climactic. I would say that was my least favorite part about this movie. It’s a very inspiring movie though if you are an up-and-coming filmmaker like myself. It’s a great concept and it’s very well directed, but it’s lackluster in the end.every time I watch this movie now, I find myself inspired to do something similar, but better.
Being sent a screener sounds like a pretty sweet career benchmark. Congrats! Just dont turn into a corporate shill. 10/10 fricheks (I don't mean like no ads or sponsors or anything, just don't turn into one of those guitar review channels that gives a favorable review to any product they're sent for free)
Nah, I would be way too uncomfortable with that. Nothing is free anyway, since it would still take up my time. With a wife, kid, and a full-time day job, movie time is valuable.
It's good to hear that you enjoyed it, I will check this out when it hits streaming. I heard more negative reviews than positive on this one, and seeing that Patton Oswalt likes it has me less interested. It seems like a movie that one might need to be in the proper mindset for.
x Watched 3:10 to Yuma, great film! o Love the storyline of bringing the notorious outlaw Ben Wade to justice, it's like a rugged odyssey across the old west! o I thought the costume of Ben Wade was very iconic! o Ruthless Charlie Prince was another of my favorite parts of the film, he is a very chilling character! o Russell Crowe is one of my favorite actors and it awesome seeing him in another fantastic performance! x Watched They Live By Night, great film! o It's probably a realistic experience of a professional thief for wanting to settle down and forgetting what their professional is, Bowie is an excellent example of someone who wants to live two lives! o I really liked how they had so many questionable activities at night, including staying at places on short notice. o I thought the set designs were really great, they seem like authentically average rooms and places at that point in history. o The conflict of Bowie wanting to leave a criminally trio was very fascinating too! x This is the watchlist (in this order) on May 31st: † Ghostwatch † Late Night With The Devil † Blood on Satan's Claw † Color Out of Space † Poltergeist (last film or any video I saw in May 2024) x Watched Ghostwatch, great film! o Amazing blend of journalism, the supernatural, and really unique camera angles! o Many parts of the script were similar to the ideas of the spiritualist Erin Pavlina and her book The Other Side, I once even received a spirit guide reading from her! o It would be hard to imagine better acting to make the whole thing so believable! o I will likely be thinking of that film for a long time... o One of my favorite recommendations I have received from this channel, a complete gem! x Watched Late Night With the Devil, great film! o Jack Delroy was a great lead, his fluid performance made all of his interactions very realistic! o I really liked how they used an owl for their mascot for Night Owls! o I really liked how they used The Bohemian Grove into the storyline, it is one of those conspiracy world elements that mysteriously is not used in many film. o Human sacrifice, in the spirit of The Bohemian Grove, is not used in many films either, really glad they used that! o I thought all the performances were strong! o Fun Fact: My younger brother used to own a house and live in Norfolk, Nebraska, the hometown of Johnny Carson. x Watched Blood on Satan's Claw, great film! o I am a big fan of folk horror and they really pulled off the vibe of what I imagine of it well in the film! o Angel is such a strong character in the film in that she is hard to define and she is more like a prescence. o There is something to be said about using nudity during those witchcraft ceremonies, it really cements the seriousness and idea of commitment for the coven! o The part when they were cutting off the devil's mark was very intense, very realistic! o The bones in the beginning and the actual claw of the devil are highly effective images! x Watched Color Out of Space, great film! o Certainly one of the most original films I have seen, never seen anything like it before! o The level of creepiness in the film is high, especially for things like jumping down that well and how the dog disappeared! o Lavinia playes a strong prescence in the film, she and her father Nathan were the assertive ones and really have a great center-stage prescence. o Nicolas Cage is a master at playing crazy, another great crazy performance by him! o I really liked how she was reading the Necronomicon, an element used by H.P. Lovecraft fans! (i.e. The Evil Dead films). † That is one of my favorite props in The Evil Dead films! x Watched Poltergeist, great film! o I picked up a lot more about the ideas of the hauntings after watching it this last time, very thought-provoking ideas! o Carol Anne's character only gets better after every viewing, she is such a cute and unusual kid that really steals a lot of scenes in the film! o The scenes between the boy and his creepy clown figure only get better after every viewing! o The skeletons in that pool only get better with each viewing! o I think I have met a poltergeist before, the results are very similar to when Marty rips off his face (then realizes it is an illusion)...though it is with dead cats that seem to disappear. o I will check out the other Poltergeist films at some point, the original is a new classic! x I will keep an eye out for In A Violent Nature when it comes around...would love to see that in some type of theater!
Saw it last night. I give the film maker so many props for the idea. The gore and kills were incredible. I think its gonna be very divisive with horror fans. The ending didnt work for me
I haven't seen the movie myself YET and I will soon but I AM kinda surprised that I'm not seeing more people call it a total rip-off of Friday the 13th. Yes i KNOW it is shot in a third person angle following the killers point of view and that's a first in slasher movies and YES I also know its suppose to be a throwback to old slashers and its SUPPOSED to be inspired by those old 80s movie's INCLUDING Friday the 13th and the directior has said so himself BUT come on, does ANYONE think it might be a little TOO CLOSE to the Friday the 13th movies ???? Its SOOOO SIMILAR! The names are similar Johnny/Jason. Looks practically Exactly like jason, put a hocky mask on Johnny and he would BE Jason, even down to how he's dressed! He walks like Jason. He doesn't talk/is mute like Jason. He's in the woods stalking people like Jason. Has no emotions like Jason. The back of his head looks very similar to Jason's. Hell, even his background story is similar to Jason's. To ME its one thing to be inspired by old 80s slashers and to pay homage to them but its an ENTIRELY DIFFERENT THING to almost DIRECTLY COPY the WHOLE THING and ONLY change your camera angle while filming it, put a different mask in the killer, and slightly change the back story. Come on people, i cant be the ONLY ONE thinking this same thing. Look, I miss good old Jason too and it feels like FOREVER since we've seen one of most people's all time favorite slashers on the big screen sporting his good old hockey mask and hacking people up but are we all just so starved for another Jason movie that we're willing to except what really looks like to ME anyway a total rip-off of Friday the 13th ??? Could we all just be so hung up on the whole camera angle thing that it's blinding everyone to the fact that it's just a Friday the 13th movie with a different title and a different mask on the killer ??? It just seems a little disrespectful to Mr. Voorhees if you ask me. Who knows, maybe after I watch it I'll feel different but the similarities ARE UNCANNY and NO ONE can really argue/deny that!
@@cobwebschannel I will go more in depth. I thought the cinematography and Johnny were great, but everything else felt so standard. I was engaged the entire time, so I wasn't bored, but it felt more like an exercise than a film if that makes sense. Yeah I know that was sort of the point, but I felt like it could have added more than it did. The only times were it actually felt like a story was being told was when we got moments of characterization of Johnny, but that was sort of it, because we learned new things about Johnny only like 5 times in the movie. The movie feels like it needs more meat on the bone. Definitely enjoyed it as I liked the delivery of it, but that can only do so much for me.
Do you have two brain cells? 40-45 min of the movie is the killer walking. Thats not an exaggeration. Just because there is gore in it for 15 minutes doesnt make it ground breaking. It was uninspired. Its clear they did not have enough content for a full movie. Stop it.
