As you might have suspected, if there's a catacombs area under Turrets 1 and 2, there's one under Turret 3. We decided to crawl around the aft catacombs as well.
We found more tiny hatches, some interesting surprises, got up extremely close to the massive black cable octopus at the bottom of the electrical vault, and entered compartments that likely haven't been disturbed in thirty years.

The Marines painted their berthing area in camo? That's hilarious and mildly disturbing at the same time. (Something witty about left-over crayons goes here....)

I'm glad I was in the Navy when I was young and thin, now days, I would have a real hard time navigating those small hatches and door ways under the turrets. Mind kept thinking about what it was like working a casualty down there when the guns were firing.

That aspect - being down there in combat - definitely goes through your mind when you're there. One way in, one way out... It's sobering.

Tremendous Video - thought I had been in every accessible space on IOWA, but don't remember this area. Glad to see it is so well preserved. Thanks for "taking us down there" - and we didn't even get dirty !!

2:06 "Some people are so fast on these ladders" It's an acquired skill. When you live and work on any ship for years, you learn how to get fast going down ladders. Keep up the good work!

True... A bit more challenging when you're attempting to hold a camera steady while going down those ladders. ;-)

Is there a pdf file of the blue print? Probably take years to print out. Thanks for the tour. Who on the crew would know all these spaces? Chief petty officer of electrical or gun operation or who? Thanks.....

If you search for it, it's easy to find. Very high resolution and you can spend hours looking.

Another informative video - Thank you. The Iowa never fails to amaze me with her near pristine condition and the quality of workmanship that built her. Getting through those small hatch's would not be easy for me now but I managed to get into some tight spaces on Battleship Massachusetts last November on my private " Firepower " tour with Dr. John Scholes including the right gun chamber in Turret #3 . Looking forward to my next visit to complete the tour ( was aboard for four hours and was unable to complete the tour. )

Outstanding tour! Thanks so much for taking us along. Would you let me explore on my own? I'd sign a waiver. I promise not to die.

There was actually a PMS check for electricians mates to go down below the turrets into the various catacombs and use a megaohmmeter to check the insulation on those giant octopus cables. As I remember it, T3 was the easiest to get to.

Seeing Turret 3 all buttoned up with the dehumidification tubes in place at the 4ish minute mark was pretty interesting. Was that leftover from her decommissioning, or was that stuff that you folks ran down there to renew what the navy had done? Just wondering since it looked to be so "new-ish" and in good condition; also I guess I'm used to seeing different color tubing New Jersey's channel's videos. Heck the plastic wrap on that hoist when you first entered looked pristine I would have expected it to have started frosting / turning white after 20 years.

Hey I'm a mega fan of iowa class battleships, and I have a question for you guys at the legendary ship, I know that turret 2 was destroyed inside but how did you guys get turret 2 guns elevated?
@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles
@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles 3 года назад
The damage done didn't affect the mechanisms that elevate and depress the guns. The hydraulics don't function now, but we can move them manually.

They must have gotten the big cardboard box and ladders in there somehow through those small openings?

Ummm.....howd they get the big cardboard box down there?
@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles

We wondered that, too! Working theory is they put the box together down there.

What's the purpose of the paper shoe covers, also why is it hot down there?
@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles
@BattleshipUSSIowaLosAngeles 3 года назад
The booties are to keep us from tracking the goo on the deck inside the powder flat all over the ship when we leave the area. Not sure why it was hot in that one area. Maybe because we'd been moving a lot and it was an enclosed space...?

Cool video. A lot of confined spaces, not a lot of talk about confined space entry procedures. Could have shown the marine chemist / industrial hygienist / competent person documentation. Missed opportunity to show some of the OSHA safety overhead that goes into this type of work. Stay safe, and thanks for sharing these videos.

The amount of money given to Ukraine to fight there futile war against Russia would cover the activation of a couple of Iowa class battleships for probably 75 years .
