This has got to be one of my favorite films of all time. One of the few films that ACTUALLY made me laugh alot. My favourite comedic scene was the one with Ken on the phone where he's lying to Harry about Ray beijg in the room but then Harry asks Ken to check the door just to be safe AND THE LOOK ON KEN'S FACE ALWAYS MADE ME LAUGH😂its just so good
@imjack1041
@imjack1041 3 года назад
Ralph Fiennes' acting when he sees Ken lying on the ground is amazing. You can tell that he cared for him and didn't want it to end this way, just by looking at his face.

So, the painting in the museum earlier is by a guy called Hieronymus Bosch. And later, on the film set, they refer to it as “Boschian”. So when Ray walks onto the set, spiraling, it’s like he’s in that painting, hammering home his point of “what if that’s all purgatory is, the rest of eternity in fucking Bruges”. After all, it was the one painting he actually liked in the museum
@MCHammerSmittyBacallJagerman
@MCHammerSmittyBacallJagerman 3 года назад
I never even got that they called the movie "boschian" but that actually confirms what I always thought into that final scene on the movie set... That the extras with the creepy animal-masks kind of resemble demons
@EmilyDickmesome
@EmilyDickmesome 3 года назад
Idk why Ray hates Bruges so much it's such a gorgeous city tbh.
@jsmarty1
@jsmarty1 3 года назад
@@EmilyDickmesome it came from when Martin McDonagh went to Bruges, and at first he loved it because of as you say, but he got a bit bored after a while, because it’s so quiet, and not very lively. Ray’s very dynamic, he wants to get pissed at the pub, do some come with some prostitutes, etc. While Bruges is lovely, as Ken says “it’s not really his thing.” Contrast that with what he’d REALLY like: “the Bahamas maybe” - it’s a completely different environment and atmosphere
@Dr3amtime
@Dr3amtime 3 года назад
The Bosch painting that they view is his "Last Judgment." Unlike most paintings on the theme, it only shows heaven and hell, with no purgatory. That may be why it appealed to Ray; part of him knew that he was going to be condemned to purgatory, at least for a while. I hitchhiked around Europe for a few weeks in '77, when I was 15. I spent my last week kicking back in a little hostel / tavern in Brugges called Snuffles. It was a lovely town.
@wozing
@wozing 2 года назад
There's also the line when Ken is on the phone with Harry saying that "a fog rolled over the town and he said he didn't know if he was dreaming or awake". I like this so much. It's fun, but doesn't take itself too seriously, but still manages to tackle huge topics in an approachable way that still makes you think.

Everything ties back in this movie. They even go to the trouble of showing you Ken counting out all of his coins early in the movie for when he later has to drop them off the tower. I love how open to interpretation the ending is - the people on the set were dressed similarly to people in the purgatory painting, and I think it’s safe to say that Bruges is at least a metaphorical purgatory. The audience stands in judgment, and you decide based on what you’ve seen of him whether he gets life/heaven or death/hell.

I believe there are 3 types of movie watchers 1.Popcorn watchers (purely shallow enjoyment/escapism) 2. As much as I love his character, but wouldn't like him as a person, I'd still admire him for the strength of his principles even if the movie presents his unshakeable principles as incredibly problematic and not really doing as much good as simply trying to be a good person. One of my favorite movies of all time and probably my favorite script of all time. I love the dialogue so much. For one it feels like everything that happens somehow ties back to something that was said an hour earlier. Incredibly tightly woven script. Also the ability to combine dark humour with really heavy stuff is incredible. One of my favorite scenes is the one where they are sitting on a bench talking about the lolipop man and whatnot. And within like a minute or two it seemlessly changes from a dramatic to humourous and then back to dramatic scene. Absolute god-tier dialogue, greatly helped by the actors. As far as the final scene, I subscribe to the Purgatory theory, he's basically stuck there and trying to repent for his sins. I think at the end is about to get judged and it's left unknown whether or not he did enough in Bruges to repent and goes to heaven or goes to hell. He talks about going to the mother and letting her judge him so I think it ties into that as well. It is a surprisingly deep movie. I liked Billboards a lot but In Bruges is imo even better.

Funny thing about Ralph Finnes, his first name is pronounced Rafe (Rayf).
@DTec1978
@DTec1978 3 года назад
Maybe people use that as a nickname, but his name is pronounced as it is written. Also, it's Fiennes, not Finnes
@GhostInPajamas
@GhostInPajamas 3 года назад
@@DTec1978 where did you get that from? You don’t pronounce the L in “Ralph”, so it’s pronounced “rafe” or “Raif”
@DTec1978
@DTec1978 3 года назад
@@GhostInPajamas I know that, but writting it as Rafe, Raif or Rayf doesn't make sense. If anything, write is as "Raff".
@GhostInPajamas
@GhostInPajamas 3 года назад
@@DTec1978 that’s kind of a moot point, I only spelled it that way to show you how it was pronounced, because your last comment said his name is pronounced how it’s spelled, “Ralph”, which isn’t true
@mrkelso

@@DTec1978 Can't write it as "Raff", cuz that would be a soft "a" sound, like raft. We're stuck trying to write it with a hard "a", like rake. You could write it like Wikipedia, which uses ˈreɪf ˈfaɪnz, but that looks like hell too. lol We're all just trying to be helpful ;).

One of my favorite films of all time! Never gets old watching it. My interpretation is...the monologue at the end is thinking back to the situation he’s in, “I really, really hoped I wouldn’t die.” This would indicate to me he lived, and is thinking back on it.

With two Dubliners like Brendan Gleeson and Colin Farrell there's bound to be some witty banter even outside of the script.

This was such an amazing movie. It was such a fresh plot too. Normally, most movies will have hitman accidently killing a kid, gets guilty and wants to get out of killer organization, that will laugh at such guilt and try to kill the hitman. This movie, on the other hand, the hitman just wants to off himself and the crime boss also wants to kill him cause even he believes that killing a little kid, accidental or otherwise, just ain't acceptable XD.
