This is a video for the 50th anniversary of the first flight of the C-2A Greyhound. The COD's first flight took place on 18 November, 1964. Since then, the aircraft and it's crews have supplied the carrier fleet with high priority logistics. This video shows some amazing insight into the mission of the COD as well as the challenge/thrill of flying the COD.
Songs (in order):
MuteMath - One More
TV On The Radio - Happy Idiot
Phantogram - Black Out Days

I was a VRC-50 C-1A COD crewman out of Cubi and Det Danang for 2 years while the C-2s were recovering from a stretch of bad luck in the early 70s. I remember Skipper Adkins at quarters one morning stressing how critical the C-2's role was - one Greyhound launched to Yankee Station carried the same load as four C-1's. The C-2 load masters and crew chiefs worked their butts off from chocks to launch and for some , the only crews rest they ever got after a 16 hour day was a quick nap on a pile of mail bags . They earned their flight skins the hard way...

Been there, done that! I was an FCPC on the C-1A's for VR-30 (just before our permanent San Diego Det became VRC-30.) I loved the aircraft, I loved the mission. Best flying I did in the Navy. This video brings back a lot of those memories. Thanks to whoever put this together.

@@dhgkrypto9510 Awesome! I was an AMS2 stationed up the road at NAS Miramar, back when that was still a thing. I worked on E-2Cs, but was trained on the C-2 as well. Fun times, got my A&P License, out of the deal. The C-2 / E-2 is a great airframe, you're gonna enjoy it. Little different pace from the fighter jet community, more family like, least it was in my squadron.

What a wonderful experience tagging along on a run to the Harry T. and back 15 years ago in the Med during the Iraq war. Got the tour and watched launch and recovery of F-18s and S-3s from Vultures Row. A former Seabee electrician treated like a VIP. The Cat and Trap are to die for!!!! I was so proud to see our Navy folks in full control of a totally self sufficient mission with no external help. What a Machine!!!

I loaded/unloaded Det 5 for 2 years on the Kitty Hawk, 1998-2000. 950 thousand pounds of cargo, 350 thousand pounds of pony, and over 4500 pax over that time frame.Det 5 took top hook one month on the 1999 cruise. :) I always liked seeing the wonder bread in the pattern, mail call was soon to follow. Even though I had to personally touch nearly every damned box and/or mail trey that came out of it.

it also looks like it's not fly by wire. I Always been wondered how some designs ends up being just best of the best. there is no substitutes. Even in our modern times many designs just works and have worked decades And new ones just aren't more effective. Itt apples in some naval designs also, not just planes. Plenty of great ship designs that we use still today, only improvements is some hightech lowfriction paint or dimpled surface to reduce drag, but basic design is easily over 150 years old in some cases. They just nailed it. Physics doesn't lie.

Oh dude, I got codded onto the Nimitz once. passengers sit facing backwards and when they kick hard Left or Right rudder, you feel it. My AMS2 buddy was white knuckleing it and when we got to the carrier he was digging his nails into my thigh he was so scared. That hurt like hell Otherwise I'd have been, all Whoo Hoo! Let's go around again! Actually, I might have said that, he was pretty pissed. Anyway, we trapped, caught the three wire. The crew was all Female VAW-110, pilot was a short little gal. long red hair, absolutely beautiful. I remember her very well; because she flew us an engine when we fodded one in Key West and flew an F-14 engine up to Cold Lake Canada, when VF-302 had an inflight issue. So really happy when I found out she was flying us out to the Nimitz.

My last active duty day...they carried me from medical to the flight deck and loaded me onto the COD. I was conscious when we catted off...but passed out during the flight. The COD off USS SARATOGA was just the first of several flights...and I spent the next six months in five Naval and Army hospitals. That was August 1992...flying me out of the Iraq area. 28 years later...I miss not being able to have stayed my 4th cruise and walked off the ship under my own power. I have spent the rest of my life fully disabled and living with what being Disabled Really Means. Physically, I can’t go aboard another carrier....but mentally I can still smell the flight deck...sometimes in my sleep I still hear the bow slam into the big waves, or heavy seas pounding the hanger bay doors. And God knows I fear the sound of silence in a pitch dark room....I wake up thinking the ship is sinking! When my dad came back from Vietnam...he was terrified of the dark...and would freak at sudden loud noises...I thought he was nuts. Now I do the same thing...in a few months I will be 60....and every time I wake up to the sound of thunder....I think the the ship has been hit...or there has been a crash on deck. Sorry...this video just opened a door and memories just flooded in. Guess I just needed to vent. Thank you for this video...and the chance to remember who I once was. My special thanks to all those COD pilots who flew the injured to safety. Who flew me to safety. And my special thanks to those who came after me to keep things going. Fair Winds and Following Seas....be safe...and good luck. Raven

Recognize NAS North Island and Starboard Delta at the ship in the vid. Brings back memories; checking into Beaver Control. I can still remember the offset approach to runway 29. I flew C-1A's on deployment for VR-30 (not VRC-30) in 75. Loved the mission. Love the COD. Best flying I did in the Navy. The mission is about to change dramatically with the CMV-22B COD. No more "Roger Ball"; no more Tail Hookers. Seems a shame. But then VR--30 became VRC-30 and the C-1 became the C-2. Guess that is called progress. I have mixed feelings on this since I work for the lazy "B", the company that makes the V-22.

Flew from Da Nang out to the Constellation Cva64 in 1972. It was on the old Cod model. Quite a trip and landing. Flew the whole coast south. What beautiful beaches and waters. Giles Jensen atr3 va147!!!

I had an emergency at home when we were in the middle of the Med. The only way to get me home was a COD from the ship to Rota Spain, then to London then to the states. But I got a cat shot off the boat and to get me back got me a landing. That COD was old, beaten up, it shook, squeaked, rattled and smelled like sweat, vomit, piss and jet fuel. But I loved every minute. What a ride!

I think a lot of us would sum up our careers flying the COD with your quote - 'That COD was old, beaten up, it shook, squeaked, rattled and smelled like sweat, vomit, piss and jet fuel. But I loved every minute.' Thanks for watching!
