my view of it is do what makes you mentally stable and happy. he said "I'm better with it than without it" which hints at a return. I think it's also probably a comfort knowing that if he did choose to come back, he has people who would GLADLY watch him perform. And personally, I disagree with his statement after that the "I think it hits harder if I don't go back" fo me I think it would resonate just as much if not more if in three years I saw a new Bo Burnham Netflix special I'd think "oh, now he's in a better place he made a good decision, he can handle this right now." But your point stands. I'd much rather not see another bo special than lose him young because he felt too much pressure to keep doing something that gave him panic attacks

The way Bo is able to analyze and think technically about his creations makes it less surprising that he's able to make such good art. Dude is incredibly artistically intelligent.
Absolutely. Theres a genuine realness to bo that nearly everyone on earth can relate to. Hes super smart, and his songs (and lighting) are true to the average human that shows a certan side of humans that not many comics or (mainstream) artists can replicate

I loved around the 30 min mark when he stared talking about young people and how the internet is a part of us, and how much venerability girls at a young age express and understand. I thought it was beautiful how he didn't disregard his fan base of "13 year old girls", he knew they understood and didn't view them as less or silly.

I had a panic attack when I was in the hospital, thought I was dying. And since I thought I was dying, the medical staff were concerned I might be dying. Next thing I knew there were 10 different people in there all trying to figure out what was happening, putting on heart monitors and other things. I asked someone if I was going to die, because I thought I should call my mom if I was. She said no, and from there all my imagined symptoms began to fade away, and so I had to tell that to all the staff. Afterwards like 15 doctors (I think most of them were fresh out of grad school doing their residency or whatever) appeared in the room to question me about it. So yeah, that was my first and only panic attack, and it was definitely not chill.

As a man with extreme anxiety, who channels it into humor to operate around people, i can relate more to Bo now than ever before. I always wanted that hilarious, cool as a cucumber approach to life that he seemed to ooze. Now i see his honesty is so much better than the act. He's fucking smart, man. How many comedic stars might we still have with us if they had taken the necessary steps to handle their anxiety and depression? It's important to be true to our souls. And maybe not regret too much. Even if what you tried didn't work, even if it feels like wasted time, take what you learned and build on it. I'm high as fuck, guys. But i appreciate Bo Burnham for everything he does. Even when he doesn't do anything.

@@Kenlac92 I don't know Bo and acknowledge that this comes through the lens of my own anxiety, but he seems to alternate between gesturing freely and closed-off body language. He seems less stiff as the interview progresses. It's so interesting and relatable to listen to him talk about anxiety and panic attacks and the duality of how they're both real and part of the show.
I fuckin love this guy. Not in a “me validating his worth” type of way but more like I wish him the best and pray that he continues. We’ve lost some good ones this year
His movie Eighth Grade made me really grateful that I’m not an adolescent at this time. I couldn’t imagine living with social media and the internet as a teen. I have teen children myself and this movie made me more empathetic to their reality.

I'm here after watching INSIDE, it's pretty awesome that he did his musical and it's a masterpiece. I didn't realize he was a drama kid or wanted to do musicals but it makes so much sense after seeing the new special. So many great songs

That poem in the end hit me so hard now after watching Inside. That poem for me is so sadly ironic. From the dog's perspective (inside a Christmas present with punched out holes)- "I'm stuck in this thing and I'm wanting to leave. There are holes in this thing that hiss when I breathe. The more that I sit here the more I believe that I'm stuck in this thing and I won't ever leave. Back in the kennel the hole/whole cage was ours, but maybe these walls are better than bars or maybe I'm hurdling skywards to Mars and the holes are actually stars."
His body language and facial expressions in this interview make me feel like he's extremely uncomfortable. Particularly how he really avoids eye contact with anybody in the audience.

It sounds to me nothing close to creepy or weird. The first Bo Burnham I ever heard was Words, Words, Words, and that was 8 days ago. I have no idea how (considering my love for C.K. and Carlin and the over a decades time earlier discovery of the two) I somehow completely missed this guy, espexially since hes my exact age. But today I spent 8 hours watching Bo Burnham on RU-vid all day long. Safe to say he's already in my top 3 favorite comedians already. Sorry Chris D'Elia but just had to bump ya to the 4-hole. 28:50 As a musician (who greatly respects Bo as a musician, especially after some of the songs from Inside had my crying) I find it VERY interesting that Bo says his performance “just doesn’t feel natural” Due to (I believe) my mental illness (and almost definitely my stoner habits), I often feel like I’m not quite in touch with my emotions. But when I hear or perform a song that touches me, I have a totally different, deeper understanding of who I am Bo and I may just simply be different types of people (though I think it is more likely we are similar people who respond to stimuli different ways, but I digress, oh my god that sounds pretentious), but it’s so fascinating to me (and maybe sad) that his musical performances feel just as structured as the rest of the show and are just as liable to have anxiety (and maybe panic attacks) running through them I’m so sorry I AM drunk, and I feel like I have used so many damn words to make my potentially incoherent point. I am a 63 year old guy and I love Bo Burnham, he is an amazing articulate well versed artist with a vision that's not only brilliant but extremely entertaining. amazing work, I am in awe really of how truly masterful and yet so humble he is. As for anxiety, I only had one attack in my life and it just so happened to be at a bank and was making a rather large deposit, I was standing in line and all of a sudden out of nowhere it hit me, all I could do is turn around and leave, I felt like I was jumping out of my skin and couldn't hardly breath, it was horrible. It only happened on time and I've never had one before or after that one time, strange. so knowing a little about it, I could not even begin to imagine how hard that would be performing for an audience of a few hundred people and having an anxiety attack... that has to be tough. WOW.
Hey, another older person! I'm a 40yr old gal and feel the same way about Bo. Before I say more: I mean _no offense_ to the younger crowd. Usually I see A LOT of teens in these comments, some folks in their 20s, and few if any people older than that. There's *nothing* wrong or problematic about being a young'un! The issue is me: there's so many of y'all I just feel like the "odd man out" in the fandom (And no offense to OP for calling you "older." While I don't see it as a negative term I know for others it's understandably touchy, so I apologize if I hit a nerve). *ANYWAY* I'm a huge fan of Bo. Although I initially had difficulty getting into Bo's earlier stuff, I've grown to like it too. Then Inside came out and it was *incredible* because it felt like he'd found his voice. Not that he wasn't great before Inside: he's always been a brilliant, entertaining, skilled and intelligent yet humble guy. There were simply certain elements in his earlier comedy that didn't work for me (I think someone here described it as "South Park" humor). Moving away from that has been an improvement. I was floored when I first heard him say he's had panic attacks on stage... I've had a few and I can't really do *anything* in those moments. I know they're not the same for everyone, but damn! Onstage? Oof. Of course, I also have GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder), SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder), PTSD, ADHD and bunch of other mental acronyms/issues... (or as I like to say, I'm "fun at parties" and "really, really lucky"). Those issues definitely influenced my experience. Thankfully they've been replaced over time with PTSD responses (fight/flight/freeze/disassociate). It doesn't sound great but they're easier to recover from, for me. I'm sorry you experienced a panic attack. They are awful and bizarre in how they seem to come out of nowhere... Your experience sounds terrible, and I truly hope you won't ever go through it again. 💜

Hell yeah, he's come down with a lot of social anxiety lately so the last thing you'd want to do would be to do something that makes him socially anxious.
Just here to say that Bo will make history with Inside and his whole body of work. No doubts about that. Apart from being the best comedian of his generation (by far), he truly helped a lot of people when he decided to release Inside. That show helped me so much to go through the toughest year of my entire life, physically, mentally, emotionally and socially. A big part of me knows I probably wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for Inside. I am not even exaggerating it. Just wanted to say, from the bottom of my heart, thank you brother Bo ❤
18:00 not to psychoanalyze a total stranger lol but the total change in body language here (along with some pieces of his newest special) makes me think he's deflecting really hard. plus the very animated way he starts talking is definitely how some people react to anxiety (myself included)
Actually, up until that point his mannerism, body language, delivery, seemed "quirky" to me. Reminded me of my neighbors son who has some type of "disorder" on the autism spectrum. Bo has nothing to that degree. Just something you sense about people, seems odd. And definitely not in a negative way ...just different.
I think anyone who has felt agonizingly frustrated, resentful, and separate from the world when it feels impossible for them to really GET IT - THAT’S where he’s at. The world is laughing, and he’s deeply fractured in the moment.
Yeah totally, notice that too. What I do find super interesting about any conversations with anyone who has admitted they have anxiety/depression and are potentially still not entirely comfortable with discussing it yet (and perhaps some that are comfortable too) is that people always seem (and I'm talking generally now not directed at you!) to be like 'woah yeah got him/her, they're trying to hide it!! Look at him deflecting! He must be reaaalllly struggling here but he's so good at making sure we can't tell" and I can't exactly pinpoint why I feel a bit odd about those sort of statements. Like it sort of seems obvious that any of us would do that because society is so against us expressing any hint of a problem with our mental health, and obsessed with us getting on with things, making money, pushing through regardless of the outcome etc etc. And even on a day to day interaction level (let alone talking about this in front of strangers) most people get pretty uncomfortable and don't know how to react when you talk about this stuff. Not because they don't emphasise, but just because we've all been taught pretty much our whole lives that these emotions should be hidden. Idk what my point is here lol I don't think there is one, but from my perspective it feels like Bo isn't the weird one here, it's societies reactions to a very normal human experience that's weird

Soo...my repose to your points... It is a very natural reaction to something "weird." Wierd meaning strange, different, something you know is not right, but it's real and being experienced as true. "Society" (others looking at you) notices it. You (the individual ) Knowtice it too..because you are experiencing it, while experiencing the experience of others looking at you,...but not sure what they are seeing. If they are seeing you (naked, your fault exposed) or just the covering you've been operating under. You're slipping, unsure of how well your holding up (the cover). As a species we've been operating under a covering of things we fashion to conceal the fact that collectively (not everybody individually) are broken beings. By broken I mean not Wholly Holy, wholly put together,... Living, experiencing the full potential of our being. Mentally for sure, Physically, and Spiritually, if one is inclined to believe there is a "spiritual" dimension to our being.

I do that a lot, too, it helps me concentrate on processing the words I'm hearing in a conversation and keeps me from dissociating and wandering off in my head mid-conversation.
This right here is why I think Bo is okay after releasing Inside. It was all planned out. And plus he has a girlfriend of many years, so I think he really wasn't alone during quarantine.
yes! thank you for saying this because I was genuinely concerned for him and just wanted to give him a massive hug after watching inside :( but hearing him say stuff like he exaggerates the emotional parts just like the comedic parts for the performance is definitely reassuring.
I think that the special is a mix of facade and truth. Sure he may have not been locked in that single room going crazy the entire time, but there had to of been some sort of inner struggle that inspired him in the first place. At the very least it shows how much empathy he has since he can articulate and present an exaggerated (sometimes no so much) representation of how many of us felt during COVID and also the struggle that the modern day people deal with culturally/politically. This is all just my opinion and I am nowhere near bo’s level of intelligence.
Everyone should listen to his podcast appearance on Happy Sad Confused, it was recorded WHILE he was doing inside. And while he makes it clear hes not doing that well mentally, he definitely sounds ok.

I'd be really interested to hear what Bo thinks about Nanette (the special fom Hannah Gadsby). Because she essentially deconstructed performing as well, just in a different manner. But her show was mainly about how the format of a joke doesn't allow for true humanity to sink in and how she feels isolated in front of huge crowds. + a great media-sociologist is lost on Bo ...
Ohhh great idea! Despite being a fan of Hannah Gadsby and Bo Burnham, it never occurred to me that they're both done deconstructions of comedy performances (in very different ways)... I'd love to see it.
I was absolutely convinced by the Burrito metaphor. It seemed to fit his life-story so well. Can't believe he didn't intend for it that way. It's strange how we build our own ideas around an artist's intentions. I'm not sure if knowing the truth has lost some of the power from the song or not for me. He's still brilliant, but I strangely liked the performance more when I had the illusion of the metaphor. I feel strange ;)
I completely agree with bo about how the sizing of screens can create either a submersed experience of an experience of dominance. There will always be that great feeling of living in the world of a movie for two hours in a dark theater

Hearing him talk about writing songs and segments with the lighting in mind, it makes so much sense how he was able to create such a cohesive environment with each song on Inside.

I had my first panic attack when I was 32, just some stuff overwhelming me in life at the time. I thought I was having a heart attack. It was terrifying, I truly thought I was going to die. I think some people use "panic attack" to describe just really bad anxiety, but when you're having a real panic attack you will know, trust me. It's not pleasant.
i'd love to see another stand-up show by Bo, but only on the condition that he can handle it cuz i don't think any of us want him to go through any more panic attacks.

Remember, Dave Chappelle had a sort of breakdown and left comedy for like 10 years because the stress was so high that he couldn't deal with it. Some of the greats get hyped up so early in their lives that they feel like that's not who they really are and I could see how it could become terrifying to have to live up to that. Imagine having to live a life without error and of complete perfection. I think Bo kind of had a Dave Chappelle experience and just decided to chill out for awhile. Dave said he felt "overwhelmed" by the people controlling him to make more money. For some of the best, it's just too much. And I don't blame them one bit. These guys got into it because they loved it. Once it turned into strictly a business, these guys have too much pride in their work. They can't just pump out perfection. But when they feel that pressure, I can see how it can be overwhelming.
He looks really nervous... like he would never make eye contact. He’s such a genius and well thought out, and understands the world on a meta level, yet that’s what screws with him. I was wondering when someone on the comments would say something about the eye contact thing. I have anxiety and I do the same! When I'm thinking and talking, I look away and down a the floor so when the floor is 50 people, you gotta look the opposite way which makes it look kinda weird. Not that it was bad or anything, that's just something I noticed
Idiots don't have trouble with eye contact. Because they don't have a complex internal dialogue to cause them anxiety when talking to others. Not all that easy or comfortable to focus on staring somebody in the eye like some sort of primal machismo contest at the same time as your psyche is running through all the ways they're gargbage, and your conscious is attempting to organize and deliver speech that doesn't include those opinions.
I think his best work is probably done in a closed environment. He's a genius, so he doesn't need to be in front of a live crowd where one single mistake will ruin it. The guy is different and he needs to stick to what he's good at. Make hilarious songs and videos. In the age of the internet, you can be a star without ever seeing a single person in front of you. And honestly I feel like that was his best work.
