This will have limited appeal for many. However it was perhaps the greatest honour of my career to sit down and chat with these old gardeners. For younger people here in the UK, Geoffrey Smith was every bit as popular as Alan Titchmarsh or Monty Don are today. His enthusiasm and warmth were infectious. To me, and many young gardeners of my own time he was quite simply inspirational. Had it not been for Geoffery I would not have continued my career in horticulture. There have been many influences over my lifetime, from teachers to other 'characters' who shaped my views, imparted humour, and channeled my energies into a life I feel blessed to have lived. These two I will forever feel grateful to have known. Geoffrey for his natural warmth and knowledge and Gordon for his work ethic, the like I had never experienced. Eggleston Hall Gardens had its modern day foundations laid by Gordon. Nothing can ever repay what they freely taught me.

Absolutely superb Malcolm. Geoffrey Smith's book "The Joy's of Wildlife Gardening" and his presence on Gardeners World and others was one of the greatest influences on me. Thank you very much for sharing this. Paul 👍😊

That great voice meandering from story to story .. cheap pink knickers and shooting at blackbirds ..and what an amazing memory he had for all those boys from the past and the jobs they did in the villages. Lovely listening with cup of tea as the rain sheets across the garden and even the neighbour's tabby bird killer is hiding under a rhubarb leaf. Thanks Malcolm..Geoffrey was truly a one off and such a gent.

Thankyou for this, I always enjoyed Geoff Smith, such enthusiasm like yourself. I always remember Geoff explaining about well rotted farm yard manure, crumbling it in his hands, and then picking a raw sprout and eating it.

More of these conversations would be greatly received if there are any, I remember him from various tv appearances, always came across as a genuine gentleman. I’ll be playing this again because I always seem to find bits that I missed the first time around when I re - listen. Thank you 🙏🏼

Wonderful. So glad this conversation piece has been found. The two Geoffreys - Messrs Smith and Hamilton - both masters in the art of teaching us amateurs and making a gardening chore seem a real pleasure. Both missed. Also I did no realise the extent of Malcolm's talent. Master Plantsman, model maker and radio presenter !. Thanks to everyone responsible for bringing this masterpiece back to life.

Shame people kill creatures like badger who are just living their lives as God/mother nature directed them to.
