I appreciate you taking the time to make this, Craig! Yes I do not mix and record my own audio.. I just play the drums lol. I will be making some big changes in my sound, but I really appreciate the kind words and letting everyone know what’s up! Much love dude.
Bro no matter what any of these comments say just remember YOU are above all of that and YOU are on top of your game right now! On tour living your dream and your band is killing it! Use samples and quantize or do whatever the fuck you want cuz your doing it right and it’s obviously working out for you man!
One thing I appreciate about your videos in general is that you seem to care about the audience understanding what's real and what isn't. You don't drag drummers for their playing or use of samples, you just point out when a video doesn't match what we're hearing in the speakers.
The guys clearly a monster player, no question about it! But I reckon it’s more the culture of producing perfectly quantised/sample replaced content. I personally don’t like it and how companies push the shit outta these guys. I just think it sets unrealistic standards for everyone who doesn’t produce that kind of content.
@@Spermwhales93 So I’ll say this. I saw the guy live. Specifically, I’ve watched his playthrough videos of his band’s stuff and it comes nowhere close to his live ability. He’s sloppy live, extremely so. Before I saw his band I was excited because I thought he was a monster drummer who could play unbelievably clean and I was wrong. I didn’t join the bandwagon of haters because it’s fun, I joined it because devin is genuinely a sloppy player who makes himself out to be perfect on the internet. Not to mention, he’s kinda an ass about it too. If you call him out or ask, he gets defensive which is a key signal that he’s fake.
NathanDrums I think that considering Craig was in The HAARP Machine once upon a time, he has the ultimate authority on whether somebody is or isn't able to play the music that they've written in a live environment :P.
and to be honest, they even used some pretty shit samples. If you are gonna go all the way and use almost entirely samples, why not layer some, much less some decent ones? I can make better samples than that in my basement, and its not hard to make natural drums sound better than that (minus the robotic consistency ofc).
@@Spermwhales93 I’m not saying devin isn’t a good drummer, he’s in part capable of the speed. Craig is not the ultimate authority and I think even he’d think you’re a bit of a chuff for thinking he is. I love Craig, don’t get me wrong, I don’t think devin deserves to be the most hated drummer, but even in this video alone, Craig still calls him out for sample replacement and quantizing. Devin denies even editing his videos, besides using samples (it’s quantized, it’s very easy to tell). I’m also fairly positive Craig has never seen devin live. Take it from someone who saw him not once, but twice. He wasn’t capable of playing hollow front songs the way he does on the record or in his playthrough videos. Physically seeing him be unable to play that stuff but watching him do it on RU-vid at an inhuman level of cleanliness shows he’s posting fraudulent content. He gets defensive as fuck about it too. Want a guys who’s the real deal and openly shows people the raw stems of their playing? Chris turner. That’s a guy who’s capable of playing and doesn’t need to edit his stuff.
I like your channel. Awesome entertainment for drummers. Remember the ghost notes on "Learning to Live" by Dream Theater? Mike Portnoy hated them. And he hated the main snare trigger. After that album, it was pretty much 100% real deal snare- no samples. Made me think of that.
Thank you for finally making a video SPECIFICALLY about him. It's so obviously sampled and edited and I'm tired of people acting like its all him. Again, it doesn't mean he deserves to be ripped to shreds and he IS an amazing player, but it's so clearly fake in videos.
I'm from the same area devin is from (metro detroit) and have seen him play live a few times. He's perfectly capable of playing his material live. I agree the production sounds very fake, but he is genuine
My favorite replacement thing is when we caught Raja Mesissner ripping audio from Josh Steffens drum covers and using them as her own. She somehow got endorsements after that. She still fakes a lot of her stuff.
@@devinhudson4905 It was one of her Slipknot videos. She then edited the caption and gave him credit for the audio after we called her out. I think she deleted it now. She has mics on her kit but doesn’t use them and then has the EAD10 but turns the drum audio so low you can’t hear her.
Guy can play really good, no doubt about it. But the thing is(at least for me) other young people, even younger than him, are seen this and they are thinking it's realistic to play like this when it's not. And having those imposible standards can be pretty demotovating for someone starting on playing drums
Come on man! Everyone who heard even one stroke on a kit in the same room knows that drums don’t sound like that. Rather over-dramatic to claim it sets unrealistic expectations/standards and demotivation in young people ffs.
It was just my point of view, cause I've seen it. Poeple on the comments section think drums can sound like that, and bet it is 100% real. But if you think is over reacted it's ok man, just don't get so mad, it's all just a chill debate
The disappointment in your face when reviewing the second (newest) video🤣. But I like your approach of not trying to shit on him. We can always have a laugh but never shame anyone unless they have been really cocky or heavily shamed others. Sometimes people need a taste of their own medicine
I follow this dude on the gram and am a fan of his content and take it for what it is really. (Even though his snare sounds like garbage thanks to whatever plugins they’re using) But more importantly hollow front is a great band.. and at the end of the day his live performance is all that matters right? 🤷🏻♂️
Dude can obviously play. He’s very obviously focused on putting on “the show” for his followers with the stick tricks, windmilling and samples etc. The problem however, is that looking at his hands……there’s no way it should sound the way that it does. Which I think in turn sets a gross precedent for younger players who will think it’s ok to just edit, replace and quantise their drums in lieu of putting hard work into their technique.
Haha, I made the video! Well, my comment did. Was actually trying to do exactly what you are doing here, he can definitely fucking play, you can clearly see that, it just sounds soooo bad. Would love to see/hear it in a proper live recording. Funny thing is I actually found that video through something else and not from these reactions, haha.
"You can't bully someone for having a shit drum sound... and being a bit of an idiot about it" Wait that's the kind of content I was hoping for when I subscribed to your channel
Even though I'm not a fan of Straight From The Past at all, i really appreciate your honesty. Hearing it from a drummer as good as you is really enjoyable Also, even tho I don't really like Devin way of playing or drum sound, Hollow Front is an incredible band and he seems like a really cool dude with no bad intentions
The internet started a the new era of shred wars like the 80’s, eventually people will go the polar opposite and start recording on an iPhone 4 no edits covering white stripes
10:14 - that doesn't necessarily sound like a sample by itself, but a very overcompressed snare that has shit tonnes of hi-hat bleed due to not the best mic placement and / or was probably automated a little up in volume imo.
So in solo 6, I think his ghost notes are actually being Drum Leveler’d, unrealistically leveled out for consistent dynamics, all the shells seem to be in that one. Yeah they’re coming from the real source but that’s still cheated as fuck
I’m almost wondering if at this point, he’s actually a VICTIM of these unrealistic expectations we’re railing against. Like despite the hate, he’s still not comfortable releasing a video that isn’t perfected in post because of the unrealistic standards set by all these clowns
dude, quantization makes wonders. hear this unquantized and it will sound so fucking horrible. change my mind please. btw, he added a LOT of notes that he didn't actually play, or played at the wrong tempo. its all "fixed" to sound good.
9:04 yeah I gotta agree about the bad mixing. Even the drum mixing before sounded kinda ass for being almost-entirely samples ngl, and the mixing with the new drums sounds like someone tried to make it sound as if Devin was hitting pots, pans, and pillow on purpose. Like wtf, that mixing is horrible. Bad gating job, putting tons of reverb on the kick, muddy lows, not enough highs on the toms; whoever mixed this is a beginner. LIKE AT LEAST CHECK IT IN THE CAR.
So i do know Devin personally, we havent talked regularly in a while but ive known him for years. He's Absolutely a Monster behind the drums. He's been playing since he was still shitting in diapers. Like Craig said, hes definitely playing everything here, it just might also edited for sound quality.
If you’re gonna use samples at least choose something that sounds even remotely like drums. Mad skills but! Edit : The brows are looking a tad over-plucked Craig.
These unrealistic and impossible standards falsely set by the “Instagram” drummers is the necessary evil to bring out a few absolutely bonkers young drummers who will learn to play like this, Natty. There I said it.
