In this episode of The Simpsons Theory, I look at one of the most controversial Simpsons episodes ever made, The Principal and the Pauper. Does this Simpsons episode truly deserve so much hate?
Was this the end of the golden age of The Simpsons?

To be honest, I quite like the idea that Skinner started out as a young punk. It throws new light on his relationship with Bart. We know they can get along quite well under the right circumstances. Maybe the reason Skinner gets on Bart's case so much is because he knows from personal experience that Bart has the potential to be a success. And maybe Bart pranks Skinner so much because he fears becoming an uptight, boring grown-up.

A great idea, and it sounds like a much better take than Hurricane Neddy. I've been really thinking about Skinner lately and how considering all the crap he takes, he's actually quite restrained. Considering how he used to have flashbacks in earlier seasons when one of the school children pushed him to it, he seems to keep most of his temper in check. A brash, younger Skinner finding discipline through his military service is actually a great backstory for him. It also contextualizes how he was incredibly eager to shape young minds in the earlier seasons, and then becoming embittered by the system beating him down. You get a sense of pain when he shouts "You know as well as I do these children HAVE no future."

I remember laughing at how the whole town decided they didn't like the real Skinner, and the next sence he was strapped to a train. Later I realize there is some pretty good social commentary here, the new or real Skinner wasn't a push over, so everyone decided he should leave (or was that just his mother? I'm working from memory) or the real Skinner simply wasn't liked because he was different from the man who stole his identity, so the whole town in mop like fashion exiled him. Either was this was a damn good episode.

I honestly liked the concept of this episode. Learning Skinner's real backstory and how he became the man he is now made a lot of sense. And the real Skinner understood as well, so of course he wasn't angry at his actions. It was the treatment of the real Skinner, and how the characters decided to get rid of him and treat these recent events that pissed me off. Not to mention the car ride forced characters beyond the titular family to unnecessarily get involved in every plotline. Much like the death of Maude, this concept needed two episodes like Who Shot Mr Burns to fully explore this concept. They could have convinced the real Skinner to take a teaching job at a different town, have him rejoin the army or given him his own home outside town and demote him with Skinner replacing him. *Anything to relegate him to the realm of forgotten characters, rather than forcibly removing him from continuity!* And the show was already declining at this point, but bad memories and meta acknowledgment like Behind The Laughter made people blame it for the decline of the show.

An essential point that haters ignore is that "Principal Skinner" took Seymour's name to honor his fallen comrade, he didn't take over Seymour's life, but rather the life that he thought Seymour would have *wanted* to lead. Seymour hadn't even applied to a university to get his education degree, but Principal Skinner earned one, and then got a job, on his own merit. While the relationship with Agnes Skinner may have been weird, she knew Armin wasn't Seymour, as evidenced by his needing to be told which room was his. Seymour Skinner may have deserved to be able to live the life he'd built for himself prior to 1970, but not the life that Principal Skinner had built in the 20 years since. It may not be fair that POWs who return after years or decades in captivity no longer fit in a world that has kept moving along without them, but many things in life are unfair. That's just how the universe is. Further, to me, the ending has a message which should be welcomed by anyone who is adopted: Springfield adopted Armin as "Principal Seymour", and his role in the community is no less "real" than an adopted child's role in the adopting family.

Two things I wanna say 1. I don't think this is a bad episode I've seen a few times over and when I see it, it feels like a Simpsons episode to me at least and the way I fit it in chronicle is the town preferred the Seymour they grew to know and love and kinda like the mob protected him. 2. I agree the real skinner is the most tragic in the series while other characters get a moment or two of happiness like u said he gets his life stolen from him. The surprise realization that Martin Sheen played Sergeant Skinner has always made me laugh. This episode has some great comedic moments like "Keep looking surprised and move slowly towards the cake" " UP YOURS children" the Weenie talk "Why is she here?" "Can I borrow your copy of Swank Armin?" And of course the great delivery of "Yes mother " Also Simpsons is no stranger to as Real Jims calls it "Screw the audience jokes" so I just chalk it up to that. Personally I still laugh so hard at this episode

This is where we draw the line seriously, this show had already moved the entire town, Homer had survived falling off a cliff, Apu had gotten shot several times and survived and the police academy suggests shooting a baby and a blind man. But no this entirely plausible scenario is a problem. We knew nothing about skinner before the war, it’s possible that this had been at the beginning of the war and he went on to do everything else he did during the war afterwards. And even if this episode sucks, that doesn’t mean that every episode that came after it sucks, those two things aren’t correlated. The show had also had several non canon episodes before this so isn’t it possible that this was one of them. Overall, this wasn’t as bad as it seemed

I always thought it was Canon. The way I see it is that both Seymours are Agnes's sons, but armin was either lost or abandoned at a young age. Tamzerian could have been from an orphanage adoption or his father's name ( is skinner Agnes's married or maiden name?). I guess it is also plausible that the father took armin as well, and agnes being spiteful doesn't recognize that the other son was hers. I don't know what the reason behind it is. I just think they are both her biological sons.

I don't dislike this episode, but I tend to forget about it most of the time. I agree that if you look at this as a non cannon episode you can see it isn't that bad. I suppose more people should try seeing it through a different lens, but I can't deny some parts of it are frustrating, and the idea of throwing away years of continuity is pretty stupid. At the same time though, there are worst episodes of the show, and I am one of those people who thinks Season 9 and 10 are still pretty good seasons even if the Golden Age was pretty much by that point. It's always interesting to see people make discussions on how some episodes that are hated maybe aren't so bad. It's cool to see that just like how some people will even make discussions on how despite how long the show has gone and has done downhill, that The Simpsons can still churn out something worthwhile here and there even if you have to dig through some mediocrity to find it. I grew up watching Simpsons on cable where the first 10-12 seasons were just played at random on repeat, so a lot of the cutoff points people cite for "classic Simpsons" baffle me sometimes, and similarly the hate for this episode is confusing. Maybe it's because all those seasons have melted together in my memories, but I really don't feel like this supposed retcon changes that much, nor does it do a disservice to the character or the fans. If anything, I think it rubbed SOME fans the wrong way at the time, but Groening and Shearer coming out and saying it's bad cemented those people's feelings and made them double down on it, dragging other fans into it with them like a certain cone of ignorance we know. This episode is fine, excellent humor and heart; everything the best episodes of classic Simpsons are.

For me "Bart the Mother" was the episode that really kicked off the Simpsons going down hil, because it was the last episode to feature Phil Hartman before his tragic death. After that it was just celebrity after celebrity.

i always liked this one, they should do a proper follow up, he'll always be an imposter to me and i think its a fine backstory. explains why 'mother' is so mean too him, plus its a cartoon with very little continuity, most eps are standalone

Love your work, but I have to disagree about most of your defences. This episode is in no way, subtle or otherwise, depicted as being non-canonical at any point, you give examples like Simpsons Bible Stories, but they are clearly episodes with the Simpsons characters playing historical/fictional people. You also bring up some of the genuinely funny moments in the episode, which I agree are funny, but that's not what people are angry about. Harry Shearer's comments on it encapsulate exactly what I hate about it, and why it's my least favourite episode of the show's run. It was a pointless bait-and-switch/deus ex machina episode utilising a beloved character to be the shock factor, and Oakley and Weinstein seem to be simply trying to backtrack their way into it being acceptable.

Oh, wow, I'm not the only one who still likes this episode to this day. As the years have gone by, I have developed more of an understanding of where the hatred comes from, but I still stand by my usual argument that The Simpsons' continuity has always been all over the place. This show constantly changes characters' back stories. Heck, I'm pretty sure Mr. Burns alone has had at least 3 different childhoods at this point.

Would not think this the worst episode ever - there are others worse than this in terms of entertainment value. Would have expected there would been different episode eg ones suggested in other Simpsons top/worst episode videos Had no idea this one was so controversial 🤯 There are so many great episodes after this The Simpsons is not dead! The only episodes I really don’t like watching are behind the laughter and the wife swap one starring Ricky Gervais and the one with Elon musk (not keen on them)!

Yeah, I find this episode a little awkward and not a perfect fit with others in terms of mood and tone, but not without its charms. As you say there are lots of standalone episodes with no implications for later ones (or earlier ones). Although maybe it is worse when they handwave in a, "yeah don't worry about this" explicitly in the episode. Like the episode where Ned Flanders and Homer become friends and at the end someone says don't worry by next week it will be back to normal and next week Homer hates Ned again and they are going to stay in a haunted house as part of a will bequest, that was to me about as awkward as the "I the judge declare we will act as if this will never happened." Like we don't need to know what happened to the NFL team after Hank Scorpio gave it Homer, we can just rest assured that next week things were back to "normal" that is maybe better.

It's not even a bad episode, It's really a 7.5 out of 10 but somebody heard the cast didn't agree along with the creator who was already over the Simpsons at the time and was crafting a soon to be Futurama and now suddenly any change to the status quo is seen as bad, this episode after so many years of them is just one of many retcons and 1997 for some reason couldn't handle it, I would say grow up but it's the internet and this is literally over 20 years old now 😂, I think people just didn't know that every episode of the Simpsons is a complete reset for the most part after season 2 unless some new writers who was just being born thinks it is canon and writes it as such

Yeah, I get why a lot of people dislike this episode. However good point re non-canon episodes, I never thought of that but it makes perfect sense. For me another over-hated episode (prepares army helmet) is...the Lady Gaga episode. I think there's some good gags in it, I like that Lisa unloads on her at the end and it's stupid and goofy. I think if you take Lady Gaga out and put in a different celeb with broader appeal (eg Dolly Parton) people wouldn't have as much of an issue with it.

My worst episode is that clip show with all the singing. I generally hate clip shows, but I really hated that one. I did like Homer & Bart's reaction to Paint Your Wagon though. Stark Raving Dad is forever tainted just for having Michael Jackson's voice in it, and he wasn't even playing Michael Jackson but a mental patient who only thought he was Michael Jackson. Better not see anything with Kevin Spacey on Disney Plus. If one voice is enough to taint the entire episode, just dub over Michael Jackson with Gilbert Gottfried lol 😝

I disagree with you, all the other stand alone episodes are either taking place in an alternative reality, alternative point in time whether it be past or future or A parody of some story never like this where it was very casual and set in the everyday Simpsons universe, I think it's fair to label it the worst Simpsons episode ever because not only does it dismiss everything we have know about the fake Skinner up to this point but also you can never trust anything said about him in future episodes because we don't know if that story happened to him or the real Skinner he essentially became a wasted character since that episode and over the years he's been reduced to being the butt of everyone's joke hasn't developed but regressed significantly it's almost as if the writing team doesn't even care about him anymore and I argue that's all because of this one episode
