Slavoj Žižek is a provocative intellectual, constantly taking positions on social and political issues that upset convention and lead him to face derision from both the right and the left. Given the often erratic stances that he takes, from his support for the Ukraine war, to Donald Trump in 2016, some have wondered whether the Giant of Ljubljana has lost his way in recent times.
We are joined by Žižek scholar Matthew Flisfeder for a discussion on how to understand the core of Žižek's thought, and how to remain true to his project and method even when he may waver from it.
Matthew Flisfeder is an associate professor of rhetoric and communications at the University of Winnipeg. He is the author of Postmodern Theory and “Blade Runner” and The Symbolic, the Sublime, and Slavoj Žižek’s Theory of Film.

Very interesting, thank you. The identitarian and totalitarian drift of many left-leaning regimes in Latin America, deeply influenced by Laclau (Chávez, Correa, Kirchner), totally proves Zizek's point on that book. There has to be a conceptualisation of universality beyond the simple sharing of an enemy.

@@byronfoodjikla I'm refering to the part of the video when they talk about Laclau and Zizek. The book is Contingency, Hegemony, Universality: Contemporary Dialogues on the Left

You really think Latin American politics can be explained by the influence a philosophers may or not have?

@@daniela1224 No, I don't think politics can be explained by the influence of any single person. But I do think politics can be explained by ideology critique and the influence of ideas.

I suspect Zizek’s relationship with Christianity is similar to his relationship with Marxism. He’s a “non-believer” in both cases but his non-belief is within the bounds of these two worldviews, not outside of them.
