Out of all the Disney Characters, Ariel is the one I relate to the most. She wants freedom, adventure, knowledge and to experience new things. She just so happed to fall in love too. It’s sad that people don’t get her character.

"The Little Mermaid" was the story that the most impressed me as a kid, and I absolutely hate these arguments saying "ArIeL cHaNgEd HeRsElF fOr A mAn". Even then I knew that this movie was about following dreams and for parents to understand and accept their children. And when Ursula sings that men like silent girls better, it's not about sexism, she just wanted Ariel, a naive and innocent teenager, to go for her deal! Btw, this is probably my favorite Disney movie about princesses because of the plot. The whole idea of a deal, of selling her voice and so on was a huge impression for me as a child.
@chelseabaker1994

I think something else that needs to be taken into consideration, I can’t remember where I heard this, but you gotta understand that when Ariel went to Ursula, that was right after her dad destroyed all her human items and she was greatly upset by that, she was in a very vulnerable and broke state at that point, so Ursula took advantage of that. Because let’s face it when you’re in a state like that you tend to act without thinking clearly, because you can’t in that state.

It always confused me when people use Ursula's quote as an example of sexism in media. Kids tend to have black and white thinking, so if a character is presented as a villain, they'll automatically understand that the character is the bad guy. So, anything the villain says will go over the kids' heads.

I think the problem is people that hate on The Little Mermaid aren't looking at the big picture. If people paid attention to the movie more carefully, they would see that if King Triton did not destroy Ariel's treasures, she would not have gone to see Ursula in the 1st place. She actually said to Ursula, "If I become human, I'll never be with my father or sisters again." Sometimes when I'm angry, I do things I don't normally do and I think it's because when I'm so angry my mind isn't thinking straight and my theory was that when Ariel signed the contract with Ursula, she probably wasn't thinking straight due to her anger at Triton. Maybe I'm wrong but that's just my theory
@PunziesPalace
@PunziesPalace 3 года назад
Absolutely!! Anger is a powerful motivator and she was absolutely distraught after why triton did so it makes sense that she acted out and went to Ursula.

@@PunziesPalace I could be wrong but I personally believe Ariel was the 1st feminist Disney Princess. If it weren't for Ariel, there would no Belle, Jasmine, Mulan, Rapunzel, Anna, Elsa, Moana etc
@jonnyboy4289
@jonnyboy4289 3 года назад
@@arielanderic Technically, Belle is the first feminist because Jeffery Katzenburg wanted the crew to make sure Beauty and the Beast has a feminist twist after Ariel was gaining criticism for being too obsessive over a man she just met (which is nonsense because it was based on sexisim, which it's not. Heck, if it were, then we would have something like, "Ariel, you can't do this because you're a girl." Then Ariel would say, "Okay.") So, yeah, The Little Mermaid has always been coitized for Ariel giving up her voice for a man she just met. It's just that it has gotten worse in the 2000s and it has gotten worse ever since.

Ariel never "gave up everything for a man". She had a strong adoration for the surface world and having all of her collection destroyed was the catalyst for her wanting to escape since she felt like her passions were being invalidated where she currently was. While Ariel doesn't go through a dynamic arc in terms of "changing", this doesn't make her a bad character nor a selfish person, even if there are character development tropes I personally enjoy more. I might be biased but I will always love this movie regardless of the whole Disney Princess Slander culture.

Let me also point out that Ariel gave up her voice for LEGS, NOT FOR THE MAN. If that was the case then she could've already gotten Eric immediately AFTER trading her voice. But NO! She had to prove to Eric that she was THE LADY WHO SAVED HIM WHILE MUTED! Also, let me mention the fact that the marriage of Ariel and Eric finally united the merpeople and humans, after several years of being separated from each other. So in a way, their marriage did a favor for both kingdoms.
@princessseraphina8990
@princessseraphina8990 7 месяцев назад
Exactly. People make such a big deal about the movies and their norms. Also, you just reminded me. Before the Under the Sea song, Ariel was going to go see Eric as a mermaid anyway. But it was the wrath of her father that made her turn away from the sea so that she could live as a human on the surface where she could be happy. She felt smothered by her father's hate and overprotectiveness. Thank you for helping me refresh my memory of the film. Also you are right about the marriage uniting the humans and mermaids, even though a peace treaty could have worked, nothing can stop the romance between Ariel and Eric. Marriages liked that worked in the era the film took place.

Lol, it's an animated comedy film based on a fairy tale - of course it's going to be ridiculous. However, it has some great themes, plus the story is quite touching. Nobody is saying Ariel is a saint, but her decision to trade her voice for legs is simply a metaphor for curious teenagers rebelling against overly protective and restrictive parenting. It goes to show that such parenting techniques can backfire. It's not meant to be taken literally.

I'm glad to see that there are more people like you who like Ariel. My guess that another reason why people hate Ariel is because she fell in love, and a lot of people, especially women, thinks that you are supposed to hate love because it weak and it sets people back in the pre-historic ages.

Just the fact that people thinks the "she gave up her voice to be with a man" bullshit being the moral of the story just gets on my nerves. Because he doesn't, like not at all. It's not even the "man"'s condition that Ariel had to give up her voice to be with him, it's not even her own initiative, it's all Ursula's AKA the VILLAIN. Just for that, it should be enough to state the movie doesn't promote this act, on the contrary. 2:45 That's exactly why I've always find Triton MORE TERRIFYING in these scene than Ursula in all her scenes. And that's really terrifies me that people side with Triton instead of Ariel, even through the movie clearly shows him being in the wrong.

I hate when people claim that Ariel changed her life for a man. She wanted to become human LONG before she even met Eric. Eric just became another reason and what Ursula made their contract revolve around. The REAL message is that Ariel went after for what she wanted in life and didn't let anything hold her back (that's a good role model), not that she gave up everything for a man; that's such a narrow-minded claim.

Ariel is one of my favorite characters and the critisims has been driving me insane for years because ive thought what made her stand out is how unlike princess characters like Sleeping Beauty or Princess Peach, Ariel is not a helpless and weak damsil but yet a kickass heroine. Although my love for the character returned thanks to her as a party member in the first kingdome hearts, in the movie Ariel outswam a shark, and saved Erice twice but yet people tend to claim it's not enough and dismiss her as weak and helpless and if my research was correct, I hope, Ariel was praised for being more active than the first 3 princesses that came before her.

So many people crap on the movie for Ariel giving up her voice, but as you mention she didn't have that much value placed on it. Clearly she enjoys singing to a degree, but only so much in that it expresses her emotions. You also touch on the fact that other people value her voice much more than she does, but I think it goes further than that. They value it so much that she is being solely judged by that to the point of objectification excepting Flounder and Scuttle. If she kept her voice then she would have been objectified by Eric the whole time and she wouldn't have gotten the chance to let her personality shine. Taking her voice is Ursula's biggest mistake because she thinks no one will love Ariel without it, but when she sees Eric falling in love with Ariel in spite of that she resorts to mind control to prevent Ariel from keeping her end of the contract. I also really dislike when people say Ariel is passive, she saves other people's lives on multiple occasions. She saves Flounder from the shark, she saves Eric from drowning, and she saves Eric from Ursula. She might not land the finishing blow the Ursula, but she was on dry land in her mermaid form at the time. It's not a bad thing to accept help when you really need it, nor is it a sign of weakness.

Personally, I think Ursala made the whole "Kiss him to remain human" because the eel familiars spying gave her the idea, and also because she was intending to give Ariel a condition that SOUNDED possible, but she didn't think was. I mean, without the prince, Ariel would have just been a mute weirdo running around on land doing bizarre things that nobody understood- and she wouldn't have anything Ursala could work to make her fail. Worst case scenario- she causes a lot of chaos and gets arrested or something.

I was 7 when this movie came out, and saw it in theaters... and I never got that lesson from it either. What drove me crazy was that even as a little kid, I understood perfectly that Ursula enchanted Eric, and that was why he wanted to marry her. My mom didn't get that, as I learned years later, and had to explain that part to her(she thought he was just willing to marry anyone who had "that voice"). People! Disney movies are made for kids! Kids understand them! Adults often don't cause they overthink it and don't accept "magic" as the explanation.

The problem is that the people who dunk on Ariel, equate having a voice to having free will, independance and strenght. They think giving up those things make you basically a slave to a man. Being mute may be a hinderance but she didnt lose her agency at all, she got to explore the castle and the town, she had a blast, and when it came to the climax, she defied Ursula. And lets not forget that one of the most beloved characters in the tv series is a mute girl, and she certainly had her own will and made it known. Heck, the tv series was even warning us of the woke agenda with the villain Manta.
@Cerebrum123

They have also spread around this idea that Hans Christian Andersen's* original story has her voice as equivalent to her soul. Usually in an attempt to tie the story to being a metaphor for him being LGBT that also believed that he would lose his soul if he followed his desires. However the reason Ariel wants to be human in the book is so that she can have an immortal soul** since mermaids don't have them rather than wanting to give up her equivalent of a soul so that she could be with someone she was infatuated with. This detail completely undermines that narrative, just as watching Disney's The Little Mermaid in context ruins the narrative that her voice is equivalent to her free will. In face she is more free without is because she is not valued solely because of it like she has been for so much of her life. Oh, and I'm curious about what shoe you are talking about. The only villain with Manta in the name that I can think of is Black Manta from Aquaman. *I haven't studied him as person so I won't deny that he might have been homosexual. However I'm not going to blindly trust that either. **She actually still gets a chance at having an immortal soul when she fails since she doesn't murder the prince in an attempt to become a mermaid again. Because of her unwillingness to kill him she becomes an air spirit, which do have the capability to have a soul after certain conditions are fulfilled.

@@Cerebrum123 Manta was a merman but his fish half was of a manta ray in the little mermaid tv show. He was prisoner in some sort of cave but was let loose because he fooled Ariel to free him, he hated that Atlantica was full of song, friendship and joy so he then proceeded to whisper flatteries and hatred into the fishes ears which got them to segregate and be racist to eachother. But Ariel and Flouder hanged onto their friendship and was able to convince the others that together they could live in harmony with a banger song. Probably best song of the show. They say that Ariel was selfish for abandoning her family and friends for a guy which I feel that she was basically trapped in her own life because of an overprotective parent and I believe she was going to meet Eric as her mermaid self because she thought he already seem nice and wanted freedom himself, it wouldn't be like if he would freak out until after her treasures got destroyed lead her to go to Ursula to change her body. I even figured that she was willing to accept her old life if she and Eric weren't meant to be after all, until Triton decided to let her go with him anyway after seeing that Eric loves Ariel for herself, no matter if she has feet or fins plus she knows that she will still be mermaid in her heart. What about if it's fair between the welfare of Ariel and the kingdom of Atlantica together? All king Triton and the others in the sea wanted is to be safe from dangers at the surface in case can't be too predictable you know I'm just saying, and Ariel was just saying to her dad like "Daddy they're not barbarians." Which she meant probably is that she thought all humans are perfect good people While Triton and Atlantica was just being paranoid well those things are so not true. Humans aren't perfect they have free-will to choose right or wrong obviously Ariel should be careful who she trust she doesn't make any sense at all in the beginning of the movie when she talked to Triton at his throne room about the faith in humanity she's only 16 yes believe me but she should have known better still before causing chaos like being naive careless to understand perspective with her father and Atlantica and made a deal with Ursula so maybe Ariel, Triton and Atlantica kingdom can understand each other equally this time later on at the end of the movie with the help of Ariel's marriage to Eric they could work together how to deal with problems on sea and land to make their worlds a better place living in it True fact that humanity still has a catch but there's hope just to know everyone has to prove themselves worthy to earn trust like Eric did for instance and that's my comment.

And notice that everyone comments on how beautifull her voice is, not on how inteligent or smart the songs she sings are. I say this because the people who criticize Ariel for ''giving up her voice for a man'' seem to think she gave up her personality or individuality along side her voice. But in the film we see the oposite happening. While she can't use her voice she uses her body language to show of her personality. And Eric, who was obcessed with the girl with the beautifull voice started to fall for the smart, curious and adventureurs Ariel. To the point where Ursula had to use Ariel's voice to hipnotize Eric. So basicly, Ursula tryed to make Ariel plain at Eric's eyes to set her for failling. But he still fell for her. So she had to use the thing that made Ariel more beautifull than any othr person in the world for Eric to sabotage her. And in the early story boards (and I love that the 2023 version reused this idea) Ursula's hold on Eric was tenuous at best.
@Eidlones

On their "date day", outside of them dancing, and the boat ride at the end, it was ALL about Ariel exploring the human world. Eric was just along for the ride. Also, during that day, she grew on him as a person, not be able to focus on the thing that he superficially loved about her (her voice), which he originally rejected her for not having. Half naked girl practically falling into his lap which he rejects cause she doesn't have that one quality he's unrealistically idolizing. Her lack of a voice is only really detrimental in that she can't explain to him what she's doing there. Her lack of a voice is just that. Her voice. Not her thoughts, personality, or any notion of autonomy. Yes voice has been used many times to indicate autonomy and taking it away can represent subservience and a lack of independence, but If the text doesn't match your metaphorical interpretation, then it's not a valid criticism. It's like they heard about what happened in the movie, applied their first year film studies class to the "metaphor", but then took it at face value.

I don't understand why they had to name this movie The Little Mermaid , the themes, morals and ending have nothing in common with Andersen's story. Unlike in Andersen's story the fact that she is the youngest of a sisterhood don't play any role in the plot. They could have named it the Mermaid Princess or the Princess of the Sea, I think those titles are not less marketable and they would have avoided the erasure of the original story.

People fail to realize that outside of a Disney universe, what Triton did qualifies as straight-up emotional abuse. Destroying a child's property, even in anger, has the potential to scar them for life. It doesn't help that it easily allowed Ursula to take advantage of Ariel either. While Triton only gets angry at Ariel, because he just wants her to be safe, it was nonetheless an extremely cruel way to treat one's own child.With this in mind, Ariel accepting Ursula's deal so readily could be her desperate attempt to escape an environment she now sees as unsafe.

Ariel totally deserves more credit! How can anyone call her a bad character when she behaves like this to Flounder?🥺; ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--j6mzW2jvBo.html

The fact that she is only 16 years old and put into a situation where she is forced to fall in love or become someone's slave is the real genuinely problematic thing of this film. Prince Eric being a man has nothing to do with it. They should have her at least age 18 for this.

ALL VALID POINTS Also has ANYONE READ the original story? Though Ariel is clearly NOT perfect. SHE DOES NOT deserve the hate she gets.

I'm not the biggest fan of Ariel but another point to Ariels favor is that when she's taken to Ursula and convinced to make a deal, she was already vulnerable from her father destroying what she had, and was easier to persuade. Ursula took advantage of that state Ariel was in. Part of it was that the voice wasn't much of a sacrifice yes, but it was also that Ariel wasn't at her best. And from there she has to face the consequences of her decisions

Absolutely!! She was definitely in a vulnerable position and was taken advantage of.

She was being way too impulsive and as a young girl idk… there are young girls that won’t make an impulsive choice..

So there are people who make bad decisions and people who DON'T make bad decisions Ariel is not the other half, that doesn't mean we ignored the existence of girls that don't make impulsive choices. If ariel wasn't like that the movie wouldn't even exist in the first place
@Linkonpark100

It wasn't exactly a an impulsive decision since the deal was only for a duration of time. However, Ursula screwed Ariel over the deal.

I don’t know the excuse that she’s 16… Eh there are super emotionally intelligent 16 year olds 😭
@intergal6916
@intergal6916 2 года назад
It means she's a growing teenager who lives under a strict supervision from her father. A teen being limited of her freedom results to a liberated, curious or rebellious behavior shown by ariel. Nobody's saying emotionally intelligent teens don't exist, that's only a minority. The majority of teens ARE emotional.

She’s a 16 year with an overbearing parent, I doubt she had the chance to become super emotional intelligent.
