That 1 mil Uighurs incarcerated is a nonsensical figure. It is widely quoted but no one seems sure where it comes from. Adrian Zenz, an anti China anti communist crusader who has never visited China is credited with that number and journalists quote it as a matter of fact. Adrian Zenz, who uses some official Chinese statistics on falling Uighur births as the basis of concluding there is an ongoing genocide fails to notice that Han Chinese as well as other minority Chinese ethnic groups experience far greater falls in birth rates and also that falling birth rates are a natural social phenomenon as female labor force participation rates rise, the cost of child bearing rise.

She so well-articulated and intelligent...

Coleman, you should visit China, walk around, talk to local people (cut away from the middleman English speaking media), visit Tier 1 and Tier 3 cities, travel deeper into the mainland, and then do the same in Taiwan. I guarantee you will come out with a whole new fresh perspective that will surprise yourself.

Woah I’m 26 minutes in and Coleman, you sound just like your typical Westerner, very confident on the information you’ve been given rather than trying to just learn more about the other side. She is very patient listening to your responses and continuously comparing China and US, with the US being on the higher ground in your opinion. Tell that to my mother 70 years old working at circle k and wal mart 7 days a week, or how most of us live pay check to pay check, or how inner city schools in Crenshaw that I tutor at are set up for failure and already determined who is likely going to jail or not. Tell that to the entertainment companies who used hip hop to negatively influence our youth, first starting with African Americans, and how they use it to further strengthen consumerism and delinquency. Freedom is a cousin to chaos, and the US is in crazy chaos. Look at the laws in San Francisco and how dangerous certain areas are. The WEST is the real problem.

Look Mr.coleman, i give u much credit for asking those legit questions and for the most part being unbiased. And your guest is being very nice in answering the questions the best she could without being too harsh. I just wanna comment on one topic u brought up even i do have a few i wanna answer in a way thats not as nice as Ms. Jin. In the arguement if china is the aggressor, thats really idiotic. The US has more than 100 military bases surrounding china and china has none anywhere close to the US mainland. For the record, the last time any country came close to doing it was USSR and Kennedy shut it down. Now imagine china is doing what the US is doing in the south china sea, lets just say off the coast of california, what u think the US is gonna do?! A couple of words, stop watching Western MSM. I gave up watching TV in Australia approx. 14 years ago. I have not missed it, preferring to research instead. I felt if I was going to watch mostly BS, or fiction, I would rather watch a good drama with good actors. Travel and people to people exchanges to me is the best education. When we visited China, we were shocked it was not at all like what we had been conditioned to believe. We found China to be a very vibrant and friendly society. We are looking forward to visiting again in a couple of months time. We have also been to many other countries, including the US multiple times. Thank you for providing this interesting conversion.

China's historical actions speak louder than any norm by the US and Western countries. Keyu Jin very well understands their own Chinese culture. Included those Chinese who have had migrated to western still keep their own culture until this day.

As a Chinese American who spent 25 years each living in China and the US I found the host merely a product of western misinformation about China with questions raised utterly ignorant. I suggest Coleman to conduct his own research in China to verify the statements he presented to Ms. Jin. I am amazed how patient and articulate Ms. Jin in her answers. I am interested to debate Coleman with my personal observations of China and America.

I totally agree with her about how the West would only narrow focused on the issue of the Uyghurs as a way to villainized China but irgnores the progress of what China have done for the majority of its people.

A lone voice in America, only if you ignore 1.4 billion people in China, another 1.4 in India, and their 4000 years of civilization. That is why America has kept getting China wrong for the last 30 years and may continue to do so.

To the Chinese, collective memories of the century humiliation by the West and Japan should not be forgotten, and remerbering it is just as important as the Jewish people and the black Americans not forgetting what they went through as peoples. Jin is a rare gem. She is one of the very few experts who can eloquent explain China to the West. She has just come out with book titled, THE NEW CHINA PLAYBOOK: BEYOND SOCIALISM AND CAPUTALISM.

She was trying very hard with secerety explaining China to someone who lacks basic knowledge about the country, and who was not ready to get rid of the western media fed concept about China. Tough job.

A calm and intelligent interview, at least I learnt a few things which are not normally shared in any US media, great job Coleman!

We need more educated, sensible, non political conversations such as this in our news media and less by the politicians.

It's nice to hear someone that actually knows China.Too many times you hear "experts" that micro-select points/facts to support their ideological narrative, to re-affirm the things they've heard. China has to be looked at from a macro level by people that truly know or have spent a lot of time in China.

As a host, it would probably be wise to inform oneself of the issues raised by oneself before the interview…rather than stumble through it 🤭 Keyu Jin did a remarkable job of walking a tightrope raised above both American and Chinese audiences 😅

Thank you so very much Keyu Jin for taking your time to sharing and explaining the understanding of the Motherland, China that the Westerners does not seem to grasp or understand. We Chinese people are often times misunderstood by other Races and other Cultures in the World. I am deeply proud of my Chinese ethnicity, heritage & culture. I’ve lived here in Massachusetts, USA since 1981 and I am now an American citizen but I still don’t forget of who I am, as being Chinese individual, despite my American Citizenship. Even though I have been here in America since 1981 and I am comfortable and I am true to myself as a human being but I have never once ever forget that I am still a Chinese person, no matter how long I have lived in America. I think a lot of the American get confused about being able to publicly humiliate your leader is being free. The key is did the leaders really changed the policies to benefit you? In China, party don't change but policies change; in America, parties change but policies don't change. American policies mainly benefits the rich and the powerful, the one percent.

I agree with the comments below suggesting people should go to China and have a deep-dive into various aspects of China and see things with your own eyes. This is a minimum requirement in order to gain a better understanding of China and its people. In addition to 'a century of humiliaton', you should also familiarize with these terms / statements if you were to appreciate what China is 'humanity with a shared future - 人類命運共同體', 'mutual respect for one another's sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, mutual non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence - 相互尊重主權和領土完整，互不侵犯，互不干涉內政，平等互利，和平共處'. Plus, I am extremely sad to see the suppresson of peaceful student protests in America, pleading for a ceasefire in Gaza on humanitarian considerations. Yet the whole movement is now framed as anti-semitism and an act promptly enacted to enpower law and enforcement to crackdown such protects. If any, American democracy is the most undemocratic political system in the world.

Dr. Keyu is a highly knowledgeable and humble scholar and expert. I have followed and watched several of her talks and she really did a lot of explanations to convince the facts of china to many people and audiences in various countries. It's a challenging work. I know this kind of work is not easy and it sure is very tiring to keep explaning and clarify so many issues against all the misinformation and malicious atracks and false information out there against China as many knows. I have great admiration for her knowledge and as a beautiful human being. I really emphasize with her challenges. Most of all she is so cool always and patient. God bless you Dr. Keyu.

Advice to Coleman: The next time you invite a person to your podcast, make sure you know as much about their country/govt as they know about yours. Do your homework. This lady knows the weak points of the USA and can articulate them. You, Coleman, couldn’t articulate your points against China quite as well. It was still a great interview. 😊

Even though the host is super propagandized by western education and media, i appreciate that he keeps a relatively open mind insofar as giving her a platform, letting her speak, and asking questions out of curiosity. That being said, i don't think he actually changed any of his opinions, unfortunately. But maybe over time he might realize how much propaganda that he is believing and parroting. There's always hope.

Both Coleman and Keyu are excellent speakers. That was a vast of complex topics the show tried to cover, clearly that'sjust not possible. Coleman although tried to be a neutral unbiased host but shallow on international relation and also a "victim" of western media as many of his information simply fetched from mainstream medias. i.e. Taiwan is part of China the US agreed to it. XinJiang is not an issue as the West stated, it's simply a propaganda by the US just as many propaganda it has done elsewhere. Lastly, democracy is NOT the only way of governing. There're good and bad on all systems so do NOT expecting to mould other into yours. Just as any families, take care of your own before worry of others. USA needed to Stop interfere with other countries as it had in the past and proven to be fatal and destructive. The world can be better and peace is possible with the USA stops nosing around.

Coleman should also interview Scott Ritter (Russia Ukeraine) and Daniel Dumbrill (China Taiwan US) to get a more balanced views for his audience.

Great interview. Some quick points to add to this discussion. 1) According to most social historians such as Peter Turchin author of End Times. Most cultures have a what he calls genetic tendency that is given to them by their ancestors due to unique historical or cultural traditions. In the case of China, she has reverted back to a 2500 yrs tradition of meritocratic mandarin bureaucracy. New members to CPC are selected only from college grads and only after they have passed what is essentially a high level IQ test. Every member of the current Politburo have advanced degrees including Xi who has a degree in Chemical Engineering. Many historians also states that the CPC should be called the Confucius Party of China instead of the Communist Party of China. 2) Xinjing. Historically for 2000 years it is a mixed diverse area. Populated by Hans, Uyghurs, Kazaks, Uzbeks, Mongols, Tartars. In Xinjing unlike here in the states, all school lessons are taught in local language and mandarin Chinese. All signs are in 3 languages, Uyghurs, Chinese and English. The whole 1 million jailed figure has been thoroughly proven false. That figure was put forward by the a group funded by CIA and extrapolated from interviewing 8, yes 8 individuals. In the age of satellites, no evidence of ppl being bused in, prisoners in yards, or any other evidence presented. 2nd person to push this idea is Adrian Zenz, a self proclaimed born again Christian who states God gave him a mission to destroy Communist China. In the last 30 yrs, Uyghur population has doubled compared to Han. This must be the first genocide where the victim numbers are actually increasing. And, this is the only genocide where the region actively advertise for tourism around the world. Where you can travel freely and go sight seeing. 3) Tibet. The tibetan ppl and Han Chinese has had close, interlapping relations since the very beginning. The 2 languages are related, called the Sino Tibetan languages. In dynastic times, there has been numerous intermarriages of royalties. Most recently Tibet came under China's rule in the late 1600's when the ruling elite in Tibet requested Qing China's help in repelling mongol invasion. Since then Tibet became an autonomous region of Qing Dynasty. After the Chinese civil war, Mao reasserted this old relationship. But instead under India and USA influence the ruling lamas instigated an armed rebellion. This was why Mao sent in troops. All this you can find via google search. In recent times, Tibet has enjoyed amazing economic development curtesy of the central government. GDP is exploding, quality of life sky rocketing, modern infrastructure everywhere. Not to mention that under the religious Lamas, most Tibetans were living as slaves/serfs.

Trying to tell the facts of China to an interviewer who knows nothing about China is imposible. But sadly though most Westerns think their knowledge about China is real and correct. Xinjiang stories, Hong Kong human right stories has been debunked again and again so many times, the guy is still talking about it....

Dr Jin is clearly extremely strong on economic issues, her expertise. But she did not address several political and philosophical issues head-on.

I have given this simple example out many times, maybe this may help many people to understand why China is different and has to be different. The US ( or Japan, or any of the Western country he cited ) is like a family with 1 or 2 kids and China is like a family with 12 or 15 kids. Under these 2 different scenarios you just cannot have the same system for both. It will just not work. The family with 10 kids need more discipline, more rules ,more parental interventions. On the other hand, in the smaller family, the kids can have more freedom, more say and probably will be more spoilt. If the 10 kids are given full freedom to decide, there will just be chaos in the house, constant fightings and what not.

According to Reuters report on Oct 2021, Chinese President Xi Jinping vowed on Saturday to achieve "peaceful reunification" with Taiwan, and did not directly mention the use of force after a week of tensions with the Chinese-claimed island that sparked international concern.

No one: Absolutely no one: Keyu Jin: Vibrant. Very Vibrant.

From 1930 till 1945 Japan massacred 30-40 million civilians , refused to apologies & instead in a state of denial. Unit 731 Japanese chemical warfare unit used Chinese civilians in Manchuria as guinea pigs. USA took all the shocking murders & kept all the Lab results & forgive Japan. This sort of humiliation can never be forgiven.

One thing need to know, Keyu Jin's father is China's former vice minister of Finance. So you can bet by yourself of her position and credibility.

I am surprised that the issue on uyghurs are still talked about and that Keyu Jin not being able to give a satisfactory answer. Several you tubers had proven it to be a manufactured issue. First, the one million figure was made up by a so called "expert" with questionable background the actual number is much less, his claims had been proven wrong over and over by many, including Muslims around the world. Secondly, the incarceration was on extremist that even the US identified as terrorist, it was Mike Pompeo that took them off the terrorist list to fit the narrative that the state department was trying to drive at that time. The borders of Xinjiang had never been closed, if people in that region were really afraid, why aren't they leaving xinjiang in droves? There was a documentary made in China that BBC actually took the image and dubbed the original conversations with totally a different content to distort the story, that's how disingenuous the western media can be.

Third for the Chinese perspective on Human Rights, Coleman missed the issues. The proper comparison to PRC is India not Japan or South Korea. These two countries are small, single race, occupied by US hence enforcement of social stability with little cost. The biggest cost of the freedom and individual human rights, including minority rights, is always the Low Government Efficiency and ability. US is a clear example and India is another one. Even today with just 1/4 or US per capital GDP this low efficiency means life or death for hundreds of millions of people. So the comparison for Chinese citizens are the tens of thousands Americans die from drug abuse every year. The millions of Covid deaths. The danger of going out at night in big cities. The desperate situation of US poor with so much more resources etc. In short if you are elites, meaning you can pick any country to live, you will live US and it’s freedom. But if you are the Chinese Poor, you do not want to be in India or even US. And there are a lot more Poor than the Elites, especially in China.

Keyu Jin is way too nice. Coleman's views were like mine growing up in America, believing all that anti-China kool aid. Here are some hard to swallow pills for western educated people: 1) The western world got rich not through democracy, but through colonialism. It was only after WWII that FDR tried to convince America's allies (UK & France) to let go of their colonies, but even they had a hard time doing so. France still tried to keep their Indochina (Vietnam) colony into the 1950s. America gave up the Philippines, but still kept Hawaii as a colony. But the western world didn't really give up their power. America, the sole survivor of WWII, implemented their US rules based world order, but it's really just US shadow empire building by using NGOs to find disaffected minorities in countries whose governments did not bend the knee to the US world order, and armed them to fight against their central government. So it's just shadow colonialism, but with extra steps. 2) Coleman believes the western political system is superior in both human rights and economic development. I used to think that way too. But why does America have the highest per capita prison inmates in the entire world? He says there's no comparison to what China is doing: locking up a million Uyghurs to Black Americans in prison. He's right: because what China was doing was a counter terrorism strategy. The 1 million Uyghurs is a made up number from western sources that were based on a handful of interviews. We don't know what the actual number of locked up extremists were, but according to AP News, most of the Uyghurs had already been released since 2021: *Source: AP News: Terror & tourism: Xinjiang eases its grip, but fear remains (2021) - Google it.* Now let's look at America's response to terrorism: 1 million Iraqis and Afghanis dead. That is the real comparison. Do the Uyghurs deserve better? Absolutely. And that is why the average Uyghur in Xinjiang is 3 times richer than the average Vietnamese. Can't say the same about the native Hawaiians that have been slowly genocided away under the US system. 3) Forced Technology Transfer: Another great talking point by US politicians. Except nothing is being "forced". US corporations willingly share a lot of their tech (Not all) with Chinese partner companies to make a profit in the China market. So far, US corporations are making money hand over fist in China. In fact, your 401k depends on China doing well. That's how much money your investments are making. If China does well, your retirement will do well. America also can't make anything anymore. This is not an exaggeration. US corporations have off shored, and will continue to off shore all manufacturing jobs out of America. If not to China, then to Mexico, to India, to Vietnam, etc. The NSA have also planted too many backdoors in Cisco routers around the world in the early 2000s. China learned from and also used similar NSA tools to enter US corporate networks. However, even with all this supposed corporate espionage, China could never compete with western established tech such as internal combustion automobiles. Japan and South Korea dominated that industry, China had no chance. But China did catch a break with EVs, that's why they're throwing the kitchen sink at new emergent tech, and just leapfrogging established tech like ICE vehicles. Huawei's 5G is another great example. China couldn't compete with established western 4G networks, so they just decided to leapfrog them instead. They had to do something what westerners didn't think China could: innovate. The west has a superiority complex though, they'll never admit China could innovate anything without their help. 4) Human Rights: You want to improve human rights? First, get rid of mass poverty. And that's exactly what China did: lifting 800 million Chinese out of extreme poverty through strong government support and economic backing. But what about freedom of speech? Coleman said you can say Let's Go Brandon, and still be free. Except not. Try taking a knee during the national anthem, you'll be canceled by the public. Lose your job. Lose your source of income. How is that freedom? Where are your protections from not losing your job? There is none. The only freedom the US government grants you is to be left alone, even if that means declaring bankruptcy. You're free to be bankrupt I guess. And that's an important point: When people talk about freedom, they usually always mean economic freedom: I want freedom to do the things I want to do in life. And that freedom, those opportunities, are less and less possible in America. But what about China? Wouldn't you get locked up? Actually, no. China has hundreds of protests all around the country. Remember the blank paper protests during the Covid Lockdowns? When hundreds of Chinese defied authorities by raising blank white pieces of paper? Literally a week later, China removed the lockdowns. What about Tiananmen Square in 1989? Didn't they send in the tanks? Yes, after mass rioting and violence broke out. And also that's exactly why Deng, the leader of China, lost his job. The leadership immediately replaced him with Jiang Zemin, who handled the Shanghai protests peacefully. But western media never mentions that, and pretends nothing has changed within the party. Again, western media always lies by omission. Today, you could even argue that the vast majority of the Chinese people have won because of all the changes that had happened in the past. 5) Hong Kong and Taiwan: The west keeps saying they lost Hong Kong because people couldn't protest there anymore. Except they weren't protesting, they were rioting. They said China locked Hong Kong down, except the killer still roams free in Hong Kong (The guy who killed his girlfriend in Taiwan and started this whole mess) because the city still doesn't have an extradition law in place with Taiwan, proving the 1 Country 2 Systems policy is still in place. Taiwan invasion: What Xi actually said was he will only use military force if a foreign power (The United States) tries to intervene. America has more to lose than China if Taiwan goes back. China would have TSMC and the 1st island chain. This is why America keeps pushing for some kind of conflict or war with China to happen in 2025. China has time on its side, it can wait as long as it needs to. America is the one that's running out of time. 6) Housing: Fact: US Homeownership rate: 66%. China Homeownership rate: 90%. America's the one with the housing crisis. The stories about China's "Ghost Cities" are often cherry picked for an anti-China narrative. In conclusion: The west fears China because it thinks it's a dictatorship, when in reality China bends to the will of its people. Go visit China. Try to live there for a year if possible. It's nothing like what the western media tries to portray it as. In America, you can change the leadership, but you can't change the policies. In China, you can't change the leadership, but you can change the policies. Hope that helps.

I don't even think she believes most of what she’s promoting here. Without looking into her background, few observations: 1) those can come to study in the US in 1997 when she was only 14, speaks to EXTRAORDINARY privileges that only the families belonging to the core government groups have access to. 2) the standard rebuttal when it cien to human rights, is always “…let’s look at US, what about your black peoples… what about the gun control issue…” Coleman is actually pretty smart to see through her. To me, she is clearly nothing but another government mouthpiece.

Hmm not sure if calling it the “Ukraine - Russia War” vs the “War in Ukraine” is linguistic trickery on her part. I suppose the Sino-Japanese War and Sino-Russian War are good linguistic references. Anyway. Good interview, learned a lot. Japan ruined Shanghai in absolutely horrific ways during their bombing campaign in 1932. Plenty of videos on that. Glad that Japan is now peaceful. I truly want peace in China and with China, as well as healthy competition.✌️

Mr Coleman Hughes need to visit China and get updated! The questions are good, but seemed to be based on certain outdated anti- China misconceptions!

Good interview! We really need this now in order to understand China better for the west … China and the west has been lost in translation for years! Wars in any forms are not good to anyone and any countries! All in one world and working together would be better solutions to make the world a better place !

At the end of the day, most people believe what they want to believe, but this is such a great conversation that hopefully would open a lot of people’s mind. Too bad Keyu didn’t seem to get a chance to dive into Russian Ukraine conflict and what she thinks China’s mindset/calculation is.

Since the rise of Muslim fundalmentalist Taliban n Al Kaeda appeared in Afagan and Middle East 30 some years ago, its wave started seeping east into Xinjiang of China. There began to see random terrorist acts done to local innocent residents and properties on the streets and train stations, no matter what race they were; even an Uyghur muslim leader was assassinated gruesomely, his head chopped off. Chinese local police found out that those terrorists had one thing in common: they either had personally travelled west to nearby Afghanistan or further west to Syria and Turkey etc., doctrinated and trained there and came back, or local Uyghurs who had associated or related with someone abroad and got "inspired" or instructed to do so; most of them unemployed or uneducated, or upset with incoming non-Muslim immigrants from other areas of China. Governments developed water irrigation systems for farmers, built power plants, schools and factories etc to accomodate more residents. Many locals are happy with free apartments and living subsidy the government provided in exchange for their land. Some don't like the society becoming modernized or less Islamic; some went abroad to join the fundamental Islamic movement and planned to overthrow the government. But local Chinese wanted those crimes to be immediately stopped in preventive ways; the best human and basic way the government felt is to communicate and change those potential criminals' violent thoughts. So they hastily set up summer-camp-like schools and requested local residents whoever had family members overseas no matter where they were to attend these new education camps, in which they learned about the Chinese culture and socialism history and ideals; some camps provided language and employment skill classes yo those who lacked. They generally lasted a couple of months; cell phones were prohibited, except in cases of emergency and family crisis, lending suspicion and fear by their relatives overseas, hence the rumor of concentration camps or even genocide appeared. Most people didn't like to be in school; plus Chinese police did make wrong judgement about some locals who didn't need to be there. And I believe that some policemen in the heat of cracking down the terrorist cells probably mistreated some, lending the reputation of police brutality. Besides, they tend to have overseas family; so exaggeration to the extent of concentration camps and genocide spread fast in the west, taken advantage by American hawks in the CIA and politians to become grounds for U.S. to sanction against rising China. One can just search on RU-vid and one will find out so many live videos posted by locals in Xinjiang about their daily lives or outside travellers to that area. In them you will see a lively and very safe society, full of Uyghure language and culture prospering. The average wage earner in Taiwan has not seen any real increases (just like those slaving away in the US and other so-called Western countries) which has stunted the overall standard of living for the diminishing middle class. Almost everywhere around the Western world, the top 10% owns 90% of a country's wealth. Name any other country other than China that has been able to pull millions of people out of abject poverty in only less than 40 years? Just because many people have been pulled out of poverty still does not mean that the average person is at the middle-income level. In fact, there is still a pretty large gap before the average GDP meets middle-class standards. As George Carlin used to rant about, the freedoms in Western countries are essentially fake and the only way to believe in the American dream is if you were asleep.

Keyu is absolutely smart and eloquent. She talks of a lot of true facts about China. The problem with Keyu is that, she does not speak the truth out of her mind. She has an agenda definitely. For example, in another talk she had in RU-vid, she talked about how open and free the Chinese banking and financial system is, and how the system is not in the iron fist control of Chinese government, but she kinda "overlooked" the fact that all banks in China are state-owned, and thus, the picture of a free economy model she was trying to portray China has was all kind of a lie. If a so called "scholar" or "expert" of a subject is biased and not speaking truthfully, he/ she is not a respectable/ unbiased/ reliable scholar. Another example For this interview in this video, she talks very superficially and kind of incorrectly about the Chinese "may be wrong about the West was due to 200 years of culture." This is not true. Chinese 200 years of culture does not the Chinese hate the West or anti West; It is the Chinese Communist Party that spread hate culture to the Chinese in order to make control of the people easier. Another example is, Keyu says there is "check and control" from the people (towards the government). But, the fact is, news and all social media in China are under extremely strict control of the CCP. All unfavorable comments and posts in the social media are deleted immediately. She definitely tries very hard to paint a good picture, and arguably a "fair" picture of China, but she is definitely not giving all she knows. She speaks some truth about China, but not the whole truth.That makes what she says not reliable and not unbiased. That makes her less a scholar of the subject matter, but more of a China diplomat.

The "Century of humiliation" is equivalent to the decimation of native Indians in America. And I would argue that widespread discrimination continues to this day, outside of China among the modern Western nations.

Second about the Taiwan issue. It is correct PRC has never changed its position of unification of Taiwan. That is why in 1970 US had to cut tie with ROC/Taiwan and broke their military treaty in order to form an alliance with PRC against Soviet. However that is not the key point here, since PRC was and able to wait for the eventual unification since ROC was not for Taiwan Independence. Hence the real driving forces of current military danger are 1) DDP is driving Taiwan to independence 2) US is hostile toward PRC and in CCP’s mind encouraging Taiwan Independence in order to reproduce the Ukraine War in Taiwan to get the Whole Western Sanctions on PRC. Hence PRC is really preparing for this scenario. Taiwan is not CCP’s 1st priority, rise above US in economy and technology is. But it is preparing for the DDP and US’s move towards Taiwan Independence and War. PRC is not fully in yet because it still only spends

After listening to Keyu Jin's enlightening comment on China's economy and the US-China relations, I am convinced that the title of this interview should be changed to: China should be praised for her great role in bringing economic prosperity and peace not only to China but also the whole world! Coleman, try interviewing Cyrus of Channel: Cyrus Janssen. He is an American that have lived in China. He speak Mandarin Chinese. It is difficult to understand China without a foothold of the language.

First about how US should treat China. The bottom line is if you treat China as an Enemy then China will become your biggest enemy. She has no choice. But that is not her preference. China wants to rise pass US peacefully. It is US, like every other superpower in the past, that is trying to stop China. The key is whether through peaceful competition or containment or even War. China currently has no ambition outside its neighboring Asia area. But if US is set to contain it, China will be forced to defend itself globally.

I'm 30 minutes in and still nothing about communism and the cultural revolution ? Neatly skipping it and comparing current China with pre-communism China ? Wasn't "their past" essentially viped out in the 60s?

One thing Dr. Jin point out is what I want to say my experience with Americans. They tend to think straight about China or almost anything. China, Chinese culture and Chinese people are very flexible and never stick to one rule all the time. We could say one thing in public but think the other privately. We utilize flexibility to adjust the situation to the best. That's something Americans have a hard time understanding because in their country, everything seems to follow what they say.

I watched this for the second time and found Coleman's ignorance to be pretty embarrassing. Homie needs to relearn some history and check his Americentrism at the door.

Well done Coleman. Trying to put ideologies aside, and make purely economic/sociological comparisons is immensely difficult - but you gave it a REALLY credible and creditable go. And this is what is needed - less gung-ho; more exploration of commonalities. I have seen Keyu Jin in several discussions and debates over time - and she has a gigantic intellect in her field. She also has utter self-confidence, and an intrinsic patriotism - partly to her country, and partly to the government which she sees as having directed an unparalleled transition from wealth to prosperity. A lot of superficial criticisms from earlier commenters - on a perceived lack of push-back from yourself - fail to understand that on matters of fact, she is almost unassailable (on her terms) because :- a) she is a formidable knowledge magnet - both on Economics and on recent history, and has learnt at many if the very best western institutions - in the days when academia was still geared primarily to learning. b) she has 25 years of deep immersion in the western environment and western culture - to an extent that almost none of us have in China. c) her default personality is altogether much more aggressive and combative than the softer, more relaxed version that you managed to bring out of her in this excellent conversation. I have in the past seen her eviscerate skilled economists, politicians, sociologists and China-Watchers with ease. Therefore for people to expect you to “push back more” is wholly unrealistic in her specialised fields. Also, this was an interview, not a debate, and your approach showed an uncommon level of general understanding of all the matters you touched upon. Overall a really great interaction, thank you - and well done for allowing her to present as an ‘everyday persona’ - which I have not seen ANYONE else do in the past.

I have had the privilege of watching her interview in Mandarin which is far more eloquent and profound.

There were countries that had been following the US/West's model ( sometimes forced upon them) for decades,some for more than a century , and how are they today ? These countries are still poor, backward and weak, why ? Because the Western model pushed upon them were not meant to make them progress and modernised! The Examples often quoted of Japan ,South Korean, Taiwan progress not really because of the western ways/model. After listening to what Keyu says in this video, I have to say that Keyu does point out some truth about China that the West or American are ignorant about China, but somehow she cunningly gives some truths, hide some truths, and twist some facts to make her argument of how good China is sounds more solid. I'll list a few points she mentions here, and my comment accordingly: [9:10] "...The people have certain deference and cooperation, but not blind submission...And the government in return takes care of the people, offers basic things like security, social infrastructure, growth... " Comment: The people have no choice, they only have one government. Some do not submit blindly, they protest when they disagree, and they get taken care of. Many submit and adore the government blindly. There is a name people give to this group of blind submissive people, they are known as "The Little Pink". [9:50] "...China has been very effective in taking care of the vast majority of people..." Comment: Indeed, many people have been lifted out of extreme poverty. However, still the vast majority of Chinese are living in poverty. The vast majority of the poor are those who got extorted by the industries and by the system, to sacrifice for the wealth of the minority (even though that minority remains a huge quantity) and the nation. [10:30] "... In China, some minorities' interest may be forsaken...but..." Comment: What she wants to say is simply this: Sacrifice of "the minority" is perfectly OK, and is good for the sake of China, This is the mentality that the Chinese government instills in the mind of Chinese, i.e., the sacrifice of some is needed for the benefits of the country. Whatever is good for the country, is good for the people. She seems struggling trying to justify this mentality, knowing that sacrificing any human rights is not something a Western value would agree as honorable. "[10:40] "600 million Chinese still have income of 2000 yuan... They have good infrastructure, they can go to school, they have good health care, they have pension funds..." Comment: According to the ex-Chinese Premiere Li KeQiang, the number was 600 million Chinese has in income of less than RMB1,000 yuan a month, not RMB2000 yuan. That is about USD137. China's population is around 1,400 million. Around half the population of China earns a mere USD137 a month. Now you get the picture? She talks about pensions vaguely. She won't dare to go in more deeply about the so called "pensions" or "pension fund", because if she does, she's going to make herself sound very awkward. You go ask around any Chinese what pensions they have, and what benefits they get in terms of pensions and medical healthcare, you will know those benefits are really very bad benefits, near to non-existence, especially for the poor, Chinese citizens pay the highest taxes in the world. That's something Keyu will never tell you. Yet, Chinese citizens get peanuts in return in terms of benefits for the senior and the poor and for the general public. That is something Keyu, the economist expert, will never want you to know, because she is here to paint a flowery picture of China, not to tell you the whole truth.

She's lovely and so articulate. When I looked at her bio I was not shocked to learn she is a LSE Professor in Economics. Her discussion on China Real Politic is a good reminder of the Chinese perspective. ...but she's in denial (or overtly lying) about China's "Peaceful intentions".

I'm not sure if this is still the norm, but I have thought that the new business class is given permission and can get extremely wealthy because labor can not protest for better wages or working conditions. If labor protests, they will be in big trouble.

I encourage everyone to first understand how international trades and economy work, then you’ll understand what shapes the landscape of international geopolitics. This guy has no idea what he’s talking about. In reference to the prison, you do not have to commit a crime to be in prison. Their constant examples of innocent people being incarcerated. You don’t have any rights when you’re in prison realize what you might think that’s not the case you’re a complete control by whoever is running the facility. United States has the largest percent of people incarcerated compared to their population. Not only are they number one but if you added number 23 and five together, they still wouldn’t have as many people as of the percent of population incarcerated as United States does. The prison system is also a very big business, and as such needs to continue to stay near capacity. Has there ever been a year where incarcerations declined? How can you exclude gun violence, as being one of the things that might be attributed to the government style. One of the freedoms that is constantly being challenged and blamed is the right to bare arms which some claim is their right. He really should’ve took more time to do better research and be prepared for this conversation especially when he’s basically trying to be the other side. Not been able to listen to her and understand or acknowledge what she’s saying leads to the ultimate waste of time of this video. He who has probably never spent any time in China or seen any other things that he’s using to reference besides Western media. Western Media being his reference point has no real proof to claims. Main point she tries to make is that the US because of the misunderstandings, and assuming that all people should be like and think like Americans. That the US don’t understand what the Chinese priorities might be, what society tends to appreciate , views as important, and what their future objectives might be. The fact is that the United States based their system of democracy off of colonialism, and nothing has changed today, except for the media’s ability to tell the truth to its own population. When western media became owned by mega corporations, it became no longer credible, and no longer told the truth. Now everything is a narrative spun to make the public feels some kind of way to get support for whatever business they’re pushing this man is a prime example.

With respect to the claims that China's economic data in the past were fudged, that phenomenon actually had many economists and investments pundits/analysts stumped back in the 90s and early 2000s. So they figured ways to work around the numbers provided to them by Chinese officials and their Chinese colleagues. One of the workarounds was to triangulate proximate economic activity from power consumption down to the municipal levels. What analysts found were a very strong correlation between economic data provided by officials and power consumption figures (which were more publicly available, transparent, and which analysts generally considered reliable). Over time, this whole narrative about fake economic data from Chinese officials got buried pretty rapidly.

Coleman needs to go to China and get educated to broaden his knowledge of China.

Coleman was an excellent interviewer- asked the right questions, not interrupting, and not argumentative. Keys Jin as usual is intelligent, articulate and knowledgeable.

I spent some time in China in the early 2010s working for a Chinese company in Shanghai. That was very educational to this American. I discovered how incredibly complex China actually is and came to understand, if only a little, what it means to be part of such an old culture. China is a country of contradictions as well as advantages, just like America though in distinctly Chinese ways. Like America, it is probably not the best idea to simplify China, especially in political speech, even if I am just like anyone else and understand the temptation to do so. China has strengths and weaknesses, charms and alarms, good and bad, pretty and ugly. The same can be said about America. It is nice to be reminded that neither China or America should be the first to cast stones while living in our respected glass houses. Yet, both f us have plenty to be proud of as well. A Chinese colleague told me something her grandmother said to her, “Under Mao, it was like we were all living in Auschwitz. Now, we may have the worst of all possible governments [who doesn’t complain about their own governments], but for the first time in my life, I am happy.” Jin elucidates this sentiment quite well and is important in understanding the contemporary Chinese psyche. I did see the results of corruption with my own eyes. Is Jin’s assertion that this corruption actually being addressed true? Maybe, maybe not. China is not the most transparent place in the world, with real truth sometimes wrapped in unfathomable obfuscation. I often wonder how the deep traditions of opacity hinder even good faith efforts to rule such a culture? One of the senior executives of the company I worked for once asked my opinion if China would ever change. Around me things seemed so optimistic and forward momentum so certain. I thought that China was destined to change, even if slowly. He shot back, sternly, that he felt China hasn’t changed much at all throughout its history so we should not expect real change anytime in the foreseeable future. He was so exasperated with how things were that he now lives in India with his family. Maybe this was just one man exasperated with his particular condition. Or, maybe he understood a bigger pulse of his own home. He didn’t imply anything particularly malevolent about China. He was just frustrated with the impossibility of doing the right thing in his own corner of the universe.

When Jin talked about China’s playbook 2.0, Chinese EV has not caught the attention of the west. China’s NEV (New Energy Vehicle) truly manifest playbook 2.0. Like Japan before China, Japan was once labeled as the chip copycat but later dropped when Japan kept churning out autos better than Detroit could delivered. Nobody is saying Chinese companies are stealing Tesla EV technology as Chinese are making indigenous EVs cheaper and better. Well done Jin in helping the west turning a new page on the understanding of China.
