I’m a dorico pro user. Kudos on this iPad version. Cross platform compatibility is marvelous. You’re right, just like the desktop version but perhaps even easier to use in some respects because of iOS iPad input /navigation options. I’ve imported several of my dorico desktop files from my Dropbox with flawless execution. Bravo. I too am looking forward to Dorico 4.
It’s incredibly powerful as an iPad app. I’m using it for lead sheets right now and you get full, customisable chord diagrams which is such a great thing. Lyric entry is also ultra-smooth and easy. This makes the Logitech iPad Pro keyboard case I bought really worthwhile. Thank you, Steinberg!
Amazing! Even though I prefer the PC version for serious compositions, this will come very handy for doing exercises on the go or sketching simple ideas. Thanks a lot for this detailed tutorial for this very well design app!
@@dorico i know a lot of people, including me, prefer the option of spending money once and owning the software. Can‘t hurt to offer it at a reasonable price?
@@dorico Ahhh. Now I understand. This is an important point. I think more users would understand your decision for the subscription model if they knew it was because of Apple's App/Update policies. Maybe a short video explaining all of this? Side note, I really appreciate the ability to jump in and out of the subscription without penalties.
Just got into dorico on desktop last month. Got an iPad today. A little disappointed you can’t input notes with the pencil like you would with a mouse click. But I’m looking forward to composing away from my desk.
That's amazing, been hoping for that for a while ! Hopefully in the future it'll support more instruments but that's already awesome ; tried on my iPad mini and it works great, congrats !! (and now can't wait for Dorico 4!)
Maybe one day but it would be a very slow and inaccurate way unless you zoom in a lot - you can try it in other apps and see how you get on but our current options are likely faster and more accurate.
What I thought until I tried this on the other app (starting with N…) that has this. It’s really nice but keyboard entry is way faster and that’s what I use.
I hope the 'piano view' and 'guitar neck view' and 'drum pad view' will be included in Dorico macOs soon. It would be very helpful to have the vertical harmony of selected notes to be highlighted on the piano or guitar view.
I love how this is a mobile spitting image of Dorico. IT looks very clean. There are 2 things I don't care for though: 1. There still needs to be some sort of paid version for extra features that should probably included or even discounted for people who own Dorico Pro. 2. The Apple Pencil integration in Notion on Ipad is sooooooo good. It's seamless and saves a lot of time. For Now, I'll probably keep using Notion on the go and Dorico at home. It's a pain having two separate programs, but Notion is just more fluid on Ipad imo.
Agree - I think Pro owners should be able to use Dorico for iPad. This would be possible through the Sign In function, I'd imagine. Or have it as a stand alone purchase. Not a fan of subscription for ANY app, and that's one reason I dumped Sibelius.
They f'ed nOtion with their last update, for some reason i can no longer add 32nd notes, and have weird bugs in which i write or insert a note in a specific bar and it goes to a random bar
I'm new to Dorico and just trying out the free version with 4 parts. Being an iPad user, I'm familiar with and enjoy using Garageband. I'm not sure if Dorico has something similar to the chord bars found in Garageband, but those are extremely useful. I found when choosing instruments that I wasn't able to hear the instrument at the screen where I chose to add the part with that instrument, which is a serious shortcoming. Maybe there's some way to preview from the pulldown menus when selecting instruments that I'm not aware of.
You can use third-party AudioUnits (AUv3) in Dorico if you subscribe. However, StaffPad have created their instruments only for their own use and can't be used with any other application - you'd have to ask them for more details about that.
Classical guitarists always need transposing parts, capo positions, chard cage diagrams, harmonics and voices, often missing from other ipad editors. Looks very promising. Thanks, very promising start.

There are a few features that would be great if you added. They aren’t on the desktop version either, but anyway… retrograde and other stuff to turn your material upside down, inside out and back and forth. Swap bars between staffs, and paste rhythm to existing notes. That would really be useful! Oh yeah, and explode!
We plan to add retrograde and some other useful stuff like that on the desktop version. I'm not sure about on the iPad version as that's more like Dorico Elements.
Honestly, I would prefer a subscription model for Dorico exactly as Adobe, MSFT, and others have implemented. It would encourage more R&D and the expectation for regular upgrades at a known price point. Not sure why the others on this thread are complaining.
Some musicians have an aversion to subscription, especially if it's not software they use every month or make a lot of money from. Thank you for your comments though. Maybe we can offer both options one day - no plans at the moment though.
@@dorico For the record, this composer would prefer a subscription as soon as you make it available. I believe it would encourage accelerated R&D and a predictable income stream for the Dorico Team.
I’m new to Dorico. Trying my first iPad Pro project. Part way through, it has frozen with some of the notes highlighted. Whatever I click on doesn’t navigate (e.g. to Setup, write to delete notes etc). Where can I go to get help? Many thanks
Click on a note, then on the right-hand side, select the keyboard symbol at the top right, then select the 'v1.' button at the bottom right-hand side. (If you have a bluetooth keyboard press Shift-L.)
Hi there Daniel. For some reason I can only see your comment in my notifications and not in the comments section of the video! Anyway, I tried your suggestion, opened in GarageBand, but going back to Dorico I still cannot see the sounds. What can I do?
I am a Pro user: How come when using the onboard piano or guitar pad it only creates (notate) chords. For some reason I can’t notate a stream of notes in any value. -And no, the create chord symbol (command C) isn’t on. However using my bluetooth keyboard it streams notes just fine. What am I missing?
I'm unable to register to my Steinberg account. The login dialogue wouldn't load, so I clicked "skip for now," and no there is nowhere to return to login/registration anywhere in the app.
You can also create a MySteinberg account from here: www.steinberg.net/en/mysteinberg.html The 'sign in' option is available when you have a project open and use the application menu in the very top right corner.
You can real-time record from the MIDI keyboard and then select the notes and in the context menu (three dots) you can choose 'requantise' and choose a different value retrospectively for the selected notes.
Biggest frustration is *not* being able to input notes using Apple Pencil in the same way that notes can be entered using a mouse on desktop. This isn't even possible on Dorico for iPad using a mouse, right? For an app that claims to prioritize note entry, the lack of support for Apple Pencil on the touch screen was inconceivable. I wasted a lot of time looking for it in vain. (That said, it's still convenient having an iPad app, to be sure.)
@@kucekto I don't think I've seen that happen before. Have you tried completely restarting the iPad? If that doesn't work, please get in touch with support via your MySteinberg account here: www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=9075&L=1
(Updated) This video has much information, but is confusing for newbies with limited bandwidth. I suggest a new edited comprehensive intro/overview for Ipad, which moves carefully from Dorico concepts, like "flow", to inputing, transposing, adding bars, lyrics, and gradually to more advanced features with a calm concise presentation. New users should be able to create and edit scores after the first 15 mins, and come back for the rest. The cost of a well planned edited presentation will be more than off-set by additional new users. This "live" presentation is packed and well meant, but does not take into account the mindset of new users, IE streaming is no way to create fundamental educational material. Newbies can only take in a few things, so make them count: Edit! We don't need subscription details etc, or references to other versions. Our time and attention is limited. It's great software and John obviously knows it inside and out, but he does not teach newbies for a living....I'm sure. Hire a professional teacher to present a polished intro specific to Ipad, and you'll maximize the great work the John and others have done! For those already using Dorico and who want updates, John's streams are great and well-done.
While Android is a popular device, it's not as popular for musicians. We'll consider it for the future though - Cubasis (also from Steinberg) is already available on Android.
Liking the presentation but please - why does the presenter keep saying ‘this is just like the desktop version’ in an excited little voice? For someone who is new to Dorico this gets a tad annoying. I have used Sibelius for years now - I am trying out the Sibelius iPad version as we speak. I have always wanted to dip my toe into the Dorico universe but this guy is assuming that all people watching are already converted from somewhere else and this isn’t the case. I did a time comparison between the two iPad versions and the amount I could input into Sib iPad was lots more but that’s due to the fact I have used that program since Windows Ver 1.0 Not fully convinced over this …. But I am willing to try it out.
Addendum to earlier rant: Once we get into the audio editing - etc, the program really began to shine. That’s thanks to Steinberg/Cubase but no way did Avid do this for Sibelius;-)
Sorry about the 'excited little voice' - I can't easily change that. On this first video on launch day it was far more likely that people watching would be existing Dorico users, so I thought there was no harm in telling them they would feel at home. I then showed all the options and features so that you could be a new user and still get to grips with it.
I will pay for my subscription when I have handwriting recognition with the electronic pencil, because the same tool that we have on a desktop computer and also with a subscription does not make sense. There are other options on Ipad with handwriting recognition such as Notion, StaffPad (excellent sound) or SymphonyPro and all without having to pay a subscription and with handwriting recognition ... The magic of the Ipad is the electronic pencil, because you use it as if you write on paper by hand, it doesn't make much sense to me to use the iPad as a desktop computer when it is a portable tool where the electronic pen is essential.
The handwriting tools (e.g. Notion, which is an extra subscription I think; or StaffPad) are not the quickest or most accurate way to enter notation. We haven't ruled it out completely, but you can also use those apps for the handwriting and then transfer to Dorico via MusicXML for more engraving etc options.
@@dorico Both Notion and StaffPad do not use a subscription or Symphony Pro (I have all three on my iPad), you pay a single price and the updates are free. StaffPad sells its new instrument sounds and from there it does its business (but it is not a monthly or annual subscription) the customer decides whether or not to buy the instrument. I understand that you need a profitable business model ... but paying for a score editor like the one I can have on my desktop computer is of no interest. Handwriting is interesting, because you control everything with your fingers and an electronic pencil without the need for an external keyboard and mouse (for that I have Sibelius and Finale on my desktop and their XML conversion). The interest of handwriting is precisely to make it look like you are writing. on "paper" for that an electronic tablet is to simulate a paper on a screen ... also to write manually with the electronic pen any musical symbol and that the program recognizes it efficiently, that is very tempting !!! and it is present and future. The mouse and keyboard end up disappearing.
@@OGrauMusic let's just say that everybody is different. Notion (with an in-app purchase) or StaffPad (relatively expensive) have hand-writing and for many people they wish they did have midi or other input methods. Maybe we'll add the app pencil as an additional option one day.
@@dorico StaffPad as a single price is not expensive, it also offers a great professional sound quality, and handwriting. The midi input I have Cubase 10.5 on my computer. I don't need a notation editor to control midi for that I use my DAW. I need a notation editor on Ipad that is complete in every way (including good sound and manual writing) without resorting to other apps to create music (I wish a single app that did all that) Anyway, I really appreciate your answers and understanding . Steinberg is wonderful with all his products and I am very happy with Cubase. I will buy my subscription to Dorico as soon as they include the handwriting, no doubt. Thanks a lot!!
Depends which device you are using - typing anything is quicker with a keyboard on an ipad and the keyboards are built-in to the Apple case (available separately of course...)
I’ve been considering a total switch to Dorico, truth be told. However, I’m finding it really disappointing to see that even this group of geniuses, is now starting to flirt with “subscription options” and marketing gimmicks. Honestly! Two players and then twelve players if you do this and that and then subscribe for 20 players and … oh dear! What a pity
On the iPad when using the App Store Apple doesn't really give us any options other than subscription. It's not something we are doing on the desktop version. If you subscribe the player limit is now unlimited.
