A look back at what a Japanese car was like 35 years ago. This one is a 1987 Toyota Camry, LE (Luxury Edition) Model. 4-cylinder engine, automatic transmission, power windows, power brakes, power steering, power mirrors. Electric shoulder belts as well.
My father purchased this car brand new in November 1986, so it's a very early 1987 model. This was (for the most part) fully loaded at the time. There was indeed a cassette player available for the radio, not sure about CD but it may have been an option. I'm not sure if this model was offered with a sunroof, if not then definitely by 1990 they had them. This particular model was built FULLY IN JAPAN and was shipped to the United States. The A/C has long since quit but when it used to work it worked great.
This car is on loan from my father, who still keeps it, but rarely ever drives it. The wif's car is being repaired, no, nothing BROKE on it, it's a Toyota, that's mostly impossible. It did have some worn suspension parts and was getting the front and rear suspension refreshed.
The "LIGHTS" indicator on the dash is INDEED working properly, as much as it made a liar out of me on video. It turns out the high-mount brake light has a dodgy connection, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and that day, for whatever reason, it decided to start working again. it quit working a couple of days later.
My dad tells me that he replaced the motor mounts rather recently. The engine was really shaking bad, so he replaced them, and it's a lot better now than it was.
