I just asked 3 o line experts Nfl, college and high school theyve called it a false step. It could be taught but its still a unnecessary step. A seal block would have a deeper step not a small one

interesting I asked a college and pro OL coach and a NFL player and they said it could be more of the coaching and what he is taught. They pointed out that the LT makes the same "step" interesting how different people of the same level can have mixed comments seeing the same thing. Super cool to learn though from all avenues, keep up the great work. At 18:48 I do agree with your points on that play. Im not out here just hating on your analysis haha

@@VochLombardi for sure. I like the pick. He’s just raw and fans just have to be ready for some mistakes in some big spots and on some drive killers. Giving up a sack on 2 and medium or a penalty on 3rd and 7-9. Be patient because he can become a great player

@@VochLombardi fair point. It could be a coaching and weekly gameplan thing. Maybe they wanted to down on the 2i and 3tech more because they see that the backers hit the A gap more. Which helps the G get to that gap and also helps the OT coming down. It’s very hard to know for sure because we are not in the room with the coaches and players. Not that I disagree with you on the depth point. If he was missing the backers because he’s getting stuck on the down block or the double then I’d be pretty concerned.

I like the assessment a lot, my one point was that watching a second film, the “false step” is something that I think was taught since OU ran a primary RPO offense. The “false step” was used to help him set up his angle for both run blocking and pass blocking. Just some food for thought

Nah the internet is goofy, this is sound logical film explanation of this young player…Bc he is a Texas guy (born & bred I mean) most of the Olineman usually find their way to Duke in DFW at some point in time…my guess is he will take a ton of pics and then find a nice place in Frisco to rent and get his big ahh to work w/ Duke and hopefully fix a lot of his deficiencies before camp….now u can’t teach nasty/dawg like Tyler Smith had in truckloads, but he can still be a pretty good tackle eventually 🤷🏾‍♂️….but they definitely gambled on a project

The "False step" Isn't a Guyton issue it's a coaching fix. Some OL coaches teach stepping inside first to take away any cross face or stunt. Their whole line does it on the playtime of Inside zone plays. I do agree I don't see a mauler and those hands need work too

I will say as an OU fan, that OU runs a very quick paced high tempo offense that uses quick screens, RPOs and primarily counter run schemes and a lot of his technique he uses could be due to that offense. It doesn’t excuse the hand placement though.

nah Voch said specifically Tyler Smith top trait was he is nasty and even with bad form he mauls people into the ground. The perfect guard. You are correct not many of us thought he could also hold down the left tackle role as a rookie as he lacked some basic form, technique, not a blackbelt. That was amazing. So I think Voch and definitely my main concern is he doesn't make the nasty blocks and finish. He just makes some contact and does the lah lah lah. I will have faith but I think comparing him to Tyler Smith does TS a major dis service.

Before I started listening to any draft analysis, I saw a mock 2 months ago that projected Guyton to the Cowboys, so I went and watched his film and wondered why anyone was considering him a first round pick. He is constantly getting beat by good defensive ends. But hey, maybe that tendency to step first with his left foot will translate well to being moved to left tackle.

The issue is, we simply couldn’t afford a project as our first round pick, especially with the way we’ve handled the off-season thus far…. And it’s that hubris exactly that could’ve led them into such a decision, thinking they could just make anyone an all pro because That’s all they’ve ever done… As much as I would hope that he comes in and surprises us a la Micah Parsons, what is the likelihood that is the case? We needed at least two starters and a couple of contributors for this year in this draft, most of all our first round pick… Shocked they got as good a deal in the trade down as they did, honestly, but we sorely needed an impact “play now” player instead of a guy who needs a lot of coaching up, but won’t likely have the same coaches next year, thereby hindering “the process”…

At 6:33 that is called a gallop technique> You used the word but, yes that is what it is called. Thats how its taught. My feedback would be to drop his hips to get a bit lower but the 3 teach goes head up on guard. Remember he his 6'8 320, thats a big kid. Same with the couple of plays later, I think that more on the G. The gallop technique is used for a double on the "3 tech". The G may been responsible for stepping to the 3 tech but he saw the backer hitting the A gap.

@travisoshea
@travisoshea 2 месяца назад
@@VochLombardi no from what I was taught at clinics and on field with some OL coaches is that the gallop technique gets to the double quicker with near foot near shoulder and helps the and helps the G snap to the 3 tech quicker. The backer is reading either A-C so it doesn’t disrupt the timing of the climb OT because the backer is probably using a lever technique with a “spill, lever, spill” Again, it can probably be taught in different modifications

Every weakness he has can be fixed, it all about unlearning certain coaching techniques. That false step to cover inside rush and swim moves while getting power to take on a bull rush. He's going to be a project to fix the problems he has but the upside has to be his athletic ability & speed. Problem is he plays like he is unsure of himself like he is afraid to miss blocks. Time will tell if he can get his ish cleaned up but a backup plan like Bakhtiari would be better for this season.

Sounds like you think he has the traits you cant teach and missing ones you can. That paired with Dallas' track record of developing O-lineman I'm happy with the pick. I'll trade day 1 starter for a 10 year starter

Sorry I’m catching this video late but as a former D1 OL and watching this film it appears that his lack of nastiness at times may be due to the offensive scheme at times and I think that a part of his downfall is definitely coaching at times. For a guy to not show any improvement with technique from fall camp all the way to the end of the season is coaching. Coaches tend to get lazy when they got a potential first rounder on their roster instead of leaning into them and pushing them. Cause he will not get away with some of these things in the NFL, guys are too good.

Theres work needed to be done. His hands, squaring up and feet a bit but what was encouraging he completly crushed and dominated jared verse. He can completely move you off the field though a lot. Look at the florida state game. Instead. Even with the work he needs. He had verse 😢 He'll get there. I think.

It 100% looks like Oklahoma is either teaching the step or the coaches don’t give af about feet 🤷‍♂️

Thanks Voch. Do you think he doesn't maul people because he's lazy? He doesn't seem to have a lot of extra effort in his play.

He has zero nasty. He barely makes contact or gets any push at all on the defender. I just think he is a really nice guy and doesn't wana hurt anyone out there. BAD and I don't think this can be taught. Ya have it or ya don't(Tyler Smith, Erik Williams etc.). Maybe it is lazy but not sure.

I hate the Tyler smith comparisons with this guy. We switched tyler smiths entire position to fit what he did great.

Not very happy with the pick tbh. Our biggest need was getting better in the run game, wanted a road grader type O lineman. Bro is way too finnessful.

YES he dances around very nicely and stands in the way very well ;) But he gets ZERO push and has zero nasty.
