The wire through is an interesting point, if had a couple spook jr hooks / keepers pull out completely on redfish. I've also never noticed they sit differently in the water. I bet a lower squat like that on the pauses allows for more strikes and less misses on the pause. I love fishing my spooks but I always laugh how many swings and misses it takes a fish to hook up.
Good video captain I was just curious what do you think about using single hooks on some of these top Waters?? I mean I never did but I hear a lot of guys urging me to do that
The hooks not being on a single wire is the Spooks down fall. I’ve lost fish due to tail hook pulling out. This only happens after the bait has smacked a few seawalls and dock posts which weakens it. The body will get a tiny crack that can split open, once that happens the next cast is right into the trash. I found the cure for cartwheel problem is removing the middle hook. It changes the weight balance and for reasons I can’t explain reduces the lures tendency to tangle up on the leader. The Spook walks so well you don’t even need a loop knot. I throw Yo-Zuri Crystal Minnows and their shallow running plugs but never bothered with their surface baits. However I like the idea of a totally silent topwater for super slick calm conditions or spooky shallow fish like Reds so I might give then pencil a try.
