In Dutch (Aesop's Fables, 1925) with Farmer Alfalfa

Here is a charming entry from Paul Terry's Aesop's Fables series. Some 450+ cartoons were produced as part of the silent Aesop's series, which ran from 1921 through 1929. Many cartoons in the series featured Farmer Alfalfa, while others did not. This scan comes from an original 35mm nitrate print.

For nearly 20 years, the Cartoons On Film team has been locating and reuniting rare 16mm and 35mm prints of these cartoons, and we've also been collecting hi res scans of prints in other collections. Cartoons On Film's long term plan has always been to restore and rerelease most, if not all of the surviving examples-which number in the hundreds. We look forward to releasing the first batch of these new restorations in the near future. It's such a treat to finally see a decent copy of this running at the proper framerate. Can't wait to see a proper restoration of it. Keep 'em coming!

It is a better copy than the old one hanging around early RU-vid, but the proper framerate is actually more like what the other copy suggests. According to an interview with Paul Terry, the Fables were supposed to run at sixteen frames. There were various framerate accomodations for several cartoons, but most of the time it was either sixteen or eighteen frames. The Oswald series, for example, used eighteen frames. As this is a raw viewing scan from the Library of Congress, the film is scanned at the scanner's targeted framerate; twenty-four frames per second.

@@jacksonpb I’ve NEVER seen this interview you’ve brought up, can you post it on Tommy’s Silent Cartoon Group? Most theaters would’ve ran them by or near 24fps by this point anyway, it became a standard by the mid 20s, so it still is accurate to how it was presentee

@@jacksonpb Adjusting the video playback speed to 0.75 would bring the frame rate back down to 18 fps.

Nice to see this 'un with the original intertitles and without that gosh-awful organ music the print floating around has. Thanks a mill! (Side note, hoping "The Transatlantic Flight" is one Fable that'll be upped here soon. I distinctly remember some collector having a Stuart Productions print of it on their YT many ions ago, but their channel is seemingly gone. Would love to see that again in the future.)
