We Finns are/were often told as kids that “don’t awaken the sleeping (Russian) bear”
Well, now that we beat them fair and square in an incredible ice hockey game, and the bear is fully awake, I’m sure we can get away with a bit more, before severing any diplomatic relations. ;-)
All with due love, food is something that unites us, brings us together, regardless of culture and heritage.
We don’t have that many courses that are both known and loved internationally.
While karjalanpiirakka is not of the most worst tasting foods we have, strangely many foreigners don’t like them.
Why is that?
Would you like some hot karjalanpiirakka and a heaping serving of melting egg butter?

Karjalanpiirakka was my first proper meal when I visited to Finland. (The first thing I ate was a coffee and pulla at Vantaa airport). I also have made them myself, because live in the US.

Yeah, traditional :) Like my friend put it: Must be rich that Carelian rice farmer who has found that sound secret location where to farm rice in Carelia, that nobody knows of. And found the version of rice which survives winter. But I like it, I eat a lot every weak.

@Qimodis Yeah, I know of potato filling - but that potato also came just after the 30 years' war, in the 17th century. So the original has been something else, like maybe turnip (nauris). And who knows how long that has been in Finland, if even that doesn't belong to the original Finnish nature - wouldn't surprise me. That's the story of Finnish cuisine in a nutshell - adapting, adapting, adapting. So very little stable traditions millennia old as in the Mediterranean (well, tomato ain't from there), American import too. The constant in the Finnish cuisine is the readiness to innovate and to look for new options. Understandable in a country in the Subarctic and Arctic. Though the nature DOES have everything human body needs, it doesn't hurt to widen the options. Makes also possible for a greater population.
