y was his family still in a struggle if stephon was a multi millionaire in the pros? couldn't he have gotta all of his family out the projects and let telfair go to college to help develop his game more before he went to the nba?
Sean De Leon I hear you brotha, some niggas be selfish as fuck and always think only about themselves. He was in the prime of his career and didn't think once about helping out they family. smh😔
Sebastian's half brother, Jamel Thomas, also played in the NBA during the early 2000's too. But I have a hard time believing that Steph didn't help out his family, I remember he used to go back to Coney Island to help out people in his neighborhood. He used to give a lot of money and advice to little kids, so that they could make it out like he did. If anything Jamel should have been the one to help out Sebastian and his family.
Sean De Leon yah it was cousins but STILL. He could've moved them in with him for atleast a few years till telfair made it to the leagues. And stephon could've mentored him. And telfair could've got help form many others too. Like Jason Kidd, Steve Nash and all the great PGS then... yah! He did PERFECT UP until his decision to the league. In my opinion he should've went to college for 2 years. Asked stephon for some help to get em out the projects and Sebastian could've asked the college to pay him under the table. And he would've been having food on the table with a nice house out of the hood. And he could've gotten much better. He could've asked NBA players to help fix his shot and stuff. And then he could've entered the pros and would've prolly been a top 3 pick instead of a kid first rounder. And he would've got payed almost twice as much and would be more developed and would prolly dominate his rookie season. It would open much more room for him to drive if he got a jumpshot. Like AI, he was 6'0. So was telfair. But AI had a great jumpshot so people stood up on him. So he's just cross em over and take em to the rack and draw fouls every time 😂.
Maybe jumping in the NBA right away is the best decision that he could have made, because his stock is high coming out of high school . His game may have been exposed much sooner if he played in college.
From what I remember he pretty much had to go to the league. I think a guy got killed right outside of his mama’s door in their apt building. After that, he had go go get the money.
That's one way to think of it. But he wasn't thinking long term though. In the end, he's personal life troubles is what kept him from becoming a great player even though he the potential.
DJ Chao What I don't understand is how his cousin moved out and bought a mansion, yet he still allowed his family to live in a place getting shot up. I mean he could've at least spotted Sebastian the money until he got signed a year later. But oh well. At the end of the day, he got all that he wanted. The security of his family. Good for him.
I remember my cousin who stayed in the Oregon Washington area would always tell me about how good telfair was in hs when we were way younger then he got to the league and I was just like what happened lmao
kinda fucked that stephon marbury let his cousin and his parents live in the projects when hes chillin in a mansion, dont gotta go givin your money away like crazy but c'mon man thats your family
William Wellmon Steph did help out Telfair's family financially early on in his career. Sebastian's half-brother, Jamel Thomas, also played in the NBA though and IMO he's the one who should get blame for not helping out his family. He's also the one who started beef with Stephon and caused a rift in the family, he blamed Steph for leaving the Timberwolves early on in his career and said that because of that he couldn't get signed by any team because he was Marbury's cousin.
Jigga My Nigga Jamel went undrafted and only played in a handful of NBA games - Jamel did everything in his power to help his family and his little brother... Did you even watch Through The Fire before making that statement?
thats a good point but at the very least take the person that has a multi million dollar potential future out of that area and remove them from the influences that can come from being around there, its kinda a grey area on how someone should handle it but in the end it didnt really matter since telfair made his money anyways
The story of Sebastian Telfair is pretty remarkable. I remember watching him play & thinking, damn, this kid is gonna make it. It's such a shame he didn't meet his potential. I think jumping from HS to the NBA may have been a bad decision in hindsight. Also, his off court problems contributed obviously. Awesome video Mike :) Looking forward to that 1 million subscriber video. You deserve it man.
Ejdaboss Ejdaboss Well they weren't that close of cousins in the first place. IIRC Steph was related to him through Sebastian's dad who wasn't in the picture anymore. Marbury did help out a lot of poor families in his old neighborhood though and he did provide small financial support to Bassy's family when needed.
Also you forget something he accepted to play a 1on1 with him and he let him win that way he made a lot of scouts to spot him and he made him super confident (no he actually could beat him)
Proper Chuffed coaches make mistakes, sometimes people get cut for no reason or before a freak growth spurt don't look like superstars. That doesn't mean they weren't good they were always supremely talented coaches sometimes miss on kids. I would no first hand. My HS coach felt I wasn't "good" enough to play varsity full time as a junior or be a "guy" as a senior and By fate I was discovered by an sneaker circuit team and after my AAU season ended I had received interest from 30+ schools of all levels d1,2 and 3. I have never scored over 200 points in my HS career, yet I am expecting to contribute right off the bat at a d2 school. While I did improve a lot and grow, coaches make mistakes and sometimes miss on kids, it doesn't mean u can't play it means the coach is usually a fucking idiot. I don't know a lot about the childhoods of the guys u mentioned but I know when Jordan played jv he dominated, he didn't go from being trash to great it's not overnight, his HS coach just made a huge mistake
Sebastian Telfair played in the NBA for 10 years, with contract worth 20 millions, and 15 millions Adidas endorsement.. So as far as getting his family out, he did the right thing. And his life shud come out ok.. As for becoming a star player, well that wasn't the goal, right? To me he is more succesfull that most.. This story was too dramatic, need to end with a high note..
Mickey Trunell Steph wasnt messing with AI. Also One on one is different then 5 on 5 as well with systems and coaches. I think Steph at the time was less athletic than Bassy. Also Bassy has something to prove Steph didn’t he’s in the league already at the time.
When the hippo was in high school he was already letting those five arrows fly. Once he reached the league, the opposition had no choice... but to sleep.
Lack of discipline. He had chances to improve his FT% with Steve Nash during his Laker year yet refused to take his advice, and despite taking lessons from Hakeem, his footwork is still not as polished as you would expect if he had put in the work. Also you can tell he sometimes isn't trying on D. Couple that with his loss of his explosiveness (he used to have his head above the rim on dunks, now it looks like he barely gets off the ground), and you have a center that teams are very willing to pass on.
There's a lot missing from this story. You never know how much of what was in this video is actually true and what all is missing. Something kind of smells. You know like a Jeffrey Dahmer documentary about how God forgave him for his "tresspasses". Hahaha
D n' A EXTREME SHOTS Z brandon roy cant never get injured because he was born with a degenerative knee condition. He was only going to play 4-5 years in the NBA no matter what
He was so damn good it was crazy to watch him. Still talk about it to this day. God I wish he would’ve gone to college ☠️ but I understand him wanting to get his family out. It’s too bad I wish it would’ve turned out better for him but he’s still a NY legend.
The time and effort u must put on these vids is unbelievable... The quality is really good ur voice and eye contact is like perfect like jheez ur the only RU-vidr that makes vids that I actually watch to the end. Good job Mike keep it up
DC4LHighlights Easy to accomplish when you splice the video after every sentence, maintain a loud voice, & employ constant dramatic music- to create the always alert effect. Plus he showed the same approx 25 highlights on repeat
There was even a book called “The Jump” and the topic was about Sebastian Telfair.....and it was a school assignment for my advanced English class back in the 9th grade...
I played against him in 94.....he dropped 45 in a PAL summer league game with ease but played several pick up games growing up in Coney Island. I remember as a kid he called a lot of fouls and would talk a lot of shit because he had older brothers lmao
There is about a trilion stories like this one. In high school we had this kid about 6'7 that was able to jump over 6 players and dunk.he had a nice 3 shot, he was a Tracy McGrady. Now i think he is working for ups or something. Most HS players dont take basketball serious so the competition is mediocre. Going from mediocre competition to grown man high flying and in top shape is a whole different story.
to make a long story short the reason he disappeared is because hus height caught up to him and he couldn't succeed in the NBA and got into off the court trouble with carrying guns your welcome now a like would be nice
Black Magic the footage in this video reminds me of younger cp3 a bit. Short but with good court vision, flashy at times. CP3 has a good mid range shot game though
Growing up with the threat of gun violence being very real you basically have to carry a gun yourself. He probably felt even more paranoid as an NBA player, knowing that he was so well known and might be a target for robbery or assault or whatever. Just saying he's not just some idiot who woke up and said hmm, I think I'll buy a gun today.
If he would've went to Louisville like he was supposed to for 2 seasons his whole career would've been different that and the fact he lost his hunger ruined him
I remember being a kid and seeing Bassy on the cover of slam. Thank you for talking about that killing on the floor of his apt. Never heard that before, makes him going pro out of HS a lot more sense.
Man, Brooklyn's Own. I had some high hopes for him never panned out. His fall kinda hurts. I'm from Brooklyn and always love to see our guys make good. I swore that he would have evolved and become a quality player. For those outside of NY, Lincoln thanks to Sebastian Telfair, Lance Stephenson and Isaiah Whitehead had a nice run in the PSAL over a long time span. Man this video is like time machine, one of Telfair's teammates, guard Eugene Lawrence, ended up playing w my fave college team St John's. I wanna say another teammate Nyan Boateng was recruited by Florida for football as a wr.
I still remember when he started to appear on the radar. Kept seeing articles on ESPN and he was on covers on SI with titles like "Phenom" and "The Prodigy". SO much hype, thought he was going to be one of the great ones. Was a VERY exciting time in basketball, with him, and then guys like Starbury, VC, T-Mac, Pierce, KG, Kobe, etc. all dominating.
Hey Mike, I'm surprised you haven't done a what if or another type of video on Ben Wilson. I think it would be a great vid as many people just forget about him as he died too young to get super publicity. Please respond
DubsOdyssey I may be biased Bc I grew up in Chicago, but I just hate whenever people talk about Len Bias and never talk about Benji. Like, I feel bad for Len, but he screwed up himself while Benji was taken away by someone else. To me, Benji's story is far more touching and horrible
Ryan Hahn Most definitely. Benji lost his life over some petty shit that all high schoolers to through and his killer is still trying to make excuses for himself. That sucks about Len but I agree with you on that. Kinda dope that Derrick Rose went to Simion (that spelled right?) and wore Benjis number
How does your millionaire nba star cousin agree to come play you in one on one but not setup your family in safer community while you attend college. Then go professional and repay him. i dont get it.i remember Telfair though. Memorable but not as impressive to me as he looks in these highlights
You should do a video about Christian Laettner, and how everyone thought he would be the next big thing based on his amazing NCAA career, then how he had a very lackluster NBA career
good nba career, but didn't live up to the hype. College ball was getting pretty big then, probably based off the enthusiasm that bird and magic brought to basketball in general during the 80s early 90s (plus jordan too). He was a victim of unrealistic expectations, and seems to have bought into the hype himself. SUMMARY Career G 868 PTS 12.8 TRB 6.7 AST 2.6 FG% 48.0 FG3% 26.1 FT% 82.0 eFG% 48.6 PER 16.9 WS 64.9
I played against telfair in high school, and also at the summit u spoke of, although I had great games against him I tell ppl to this day he was the best player i ever played against, he was a small derrick rose(mvp rose) and finished liked iverson, great pg, crazy story...
Danny Wilson Jr nah he wondering why they were broke if their cousin (Marbury) had all the money he earned from playing...bc when all of this was going on, Marbury was getting PAID. so maybe he's wondering why he didn't give him a little bit of money and help the family out
You can't take care of your whole family with an NBA salary. You all don't know how it works. Steph would've ended up like Antoine Walker taking care of everybody. Feed a man a fish he eats for a day. Teach him to fish he eats for a lifetime
Not only did he get 3.5 years in prison in 2019, but now his mother and brother pass away because of the Corona Virus. He worked hard to get them out of danger, and now he's in jail and didn't get a chance to see and visit them. When he gets out of jail, I hope Telfair can find a light in this dark tunnel he's currently facing.
Again huge exaggeration by Korzemba. Telfair was the 6th ranked player in his class, and not even the highest ranked of his position. He's not some crazy hyped player like Lebron, or Anthony Davis. No one really expected him to blow everyone away, hence he was drafted 13th overall. Korzemba you really need to stop blowing random stories you've read online out of proportion.
brian ho now you know you're lying. Telfair was gassed so heavily man everyone knew Lebron and Telfair were the best players in the nation and it wasn't even close
Very Similar to Lance Stephenson. Stephenson broke Telfair's scoring record while playing at Lincoln High School, but personality issues stopped him from playing at a great college and so after attending Cincinnati for a year he had lost his hype and draft value he once had.
